Remote Roundup: "30 Rock"

October 12, 2006

deathwatch_30rock_320x240.jpg

The Tina Fey/Alec Baldwin comedy premiered last night. So, what did you think of "30 Rock?"

We're talking about it here -- and not just because NBC is our parent company or that we work at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. And that's all we'll share for now, because we're more interested in what you have to say.

As far as the stats are concerned -- "30 Rock" was at Number 17 on the DeathWatch last night. After it's premiere, it dropped to number 16 and scored a 5.5 in the ratings. Everyone was clobbered by "Dancing with the Stars" last night -- but "30 Rock" was also beaten by the apocalypse drama "Jericho" (which DeathWatch has ranked at number 7).

First impressions? You tell us!

I thought "30 Rock" had some brilliant and funny moments (surprisingly, most of them provided by Alec Baldwin) but I'm not too excited. If I thought it had a chance ratings-wise, I'd stick to it with gusto, but so many shows I liked are either in danger or already gone, so I'm not getting attached to any more...

ashlee wrote:

I really loved the show..who cares what the critics think. This show won't be getting cancelled anytime soon.

BORING ------BORING ----- Did I say boring
The show was sooooo slow, not that funny and we changed the channel within 5 minutes

luz wrote:

Thank god for Alec Baldwin on this show or it would have been unwatchable. I usually love Tina Fey but she was pretty awful along with the girl from Ally Mcbeal. Wow, what a lot of crap, just give Alec A LOT more airtime and it might work out. Tracy Morgan and Racheal Dreach were watchable, but the show definatly needs work. I can honestly say I will watch the show to see the always great Alec Baldwin. It's on my tivo list

Brian Thompson wrote:

I was pleasantly surprised! I had quite a few laugh out loud moments and that is so rare. I'm a huge Tina Fey fan and from the opening scene with the hot dog vendor (I live in NYC), I was hooked. Charming, funny, a little politically incorrect and NO laugh track (big plus right there). I'll be watching next week and keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get axed.

Ericka wrote:

I enjoyed the show and was glad to add another watchable comedy in the usual line up of dramas. I definetly think Alec Baldwin was the shining star in the show, however Tracy Morgan was a close second. I thought tough that Tina Fey's acting was less then stellar.

Gary wrote:

I work in the industry as an assistant director and try to watch all the new show. I had high hopes for this one because Alec Baldwin is very funny in comedy roles. I found myself switching away once the premise went to Tracy Morgan who is funny but not in this. I would expect this show to hit the skids sooner than later. But what do I know I loved "Smith" and it was yanked after three airings.......

Dusty wrote:

BAD, BAD, BAD!! I didn't enjoy it at all. I think Alec Baldwin has the potential to be absolutely awesome on a better show. It's a shame he's wasted on this one. Put him on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and he would shine! I was interested in seeing 30 Rock because it has the same premise as Studio 60 (which I TOTALLY adore) and I had heard how good 30 Rock was supposed to be - WRONG! I didn't like any of the characters - they generated absolutely no interest in me. I thought the humor was stupid - throwing a cat around on stage..that's suppose to be funny? No, thanks.

Jack wrote:

Sucked - isn't Baldwin overdue for leaving the Country

Judy wrote:

Alex Baldwin was great. The show had its moments, but it lost momentum with Tracy Morgan. I wish they'd rely on more subtle humor and try not to hit us on the head with wacho Tracy Morgan character.

Brian wrote:

What was NBC thinking? A late night comedy show a new executive at NBS/ NBC. Is the show called studio 60 or 30 rock? Same plot here just different jokes. 30 rock would be a great recurring skit on SNL but fails as a weekly sitcom. Sorry Tina Fey I thought you were better than this.

TVTed wrote:

Was this show supposed to be funny? It wasn't.
Maybe all the jokes were just too inside TV for me to get. Maybe it's just not interesting to see how TV is made -- and if this show is in any way represenative of reality then it's no wonder the networks are in trouble. They seemed to take a buch of different half baked story lines, mix them all together and then forget to tie any of the parts to the whole. Who are all these people and why should I care? And the concept of worrying about why a show called "The Girly Show" doesn't appeal to a specfic male demographic. Could be that's it the name of the show and not the content.

shannon wrote:

So many great people. Such a sucky show. How does that happen? We won't be watching it again.

Ronald Perpetua wrote:

The show had its moments, but like many sitcoms before it, it still needs to find its "voice". The pace was a bit sluggish and uneven as you could tell the show was figuring out what type of show it would be. Alec Baldwin is terrific as is, lets just hope that Tina Fey and company can settle in and get the laughs rolling, otherwise this show winds up on the chopping block, which by the way is what I predict for the much bally hoo'd about the overrated Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Jacki wrote:

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooooooooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooow. If you're gonna use the Scrubs format, you better have the stuff to keep it moving.
I won't bother with it again.

Wildness wrote:

Outside of Alec Bladwin, this show was a dud from the outset. Then it got worse when we met the Tracy Jordan character - over the top and NOT funny.

I think that Tina Fey is brilliant, but this show isn't. It will probably only survive for 3-6 episodes before getting pulled or moved to a dumping ground on another night.

William French wrote:

I think there is a lot of potential for "30 Rock". I think the pilot had to cram too much into a half hour. This could have been an hour episode so that it could have been more funny. But we must remember, pilots are originally 15 minutes long and the other 15 minutes have to be added, which can change the feel of the show.

meegan wrote:

Tried to watch it but was side-tracked too easily. I really like alec baldwin and tina fey. They're good at nailing each other. Tracy is a different story. He's way too over the top. I want the show to work but at this point, there are way too many shows that are better, Heroes, Jericho, The office, Earl, Battlestar, family guy, (urr) smallville (duck), and supernatural (swerve)

Frank wrote:

I have been looking forward to watching this show, but unfortunately all the great parts were already seen in the endless promos!! I am hoping there are future episodes that haven't been spoiled by the promos giving everything away!! I love Alec Baldwin and I think Tina Fey is great as the straightman to Alec's character in the skits.....Change the name of the show though....The Girlie Show just sounds ridiculous.

Mary wrote:

I'm usually a fan of Tina Fey, but after 10 minutes of this crap, I had to turn back to Olbermann, It seems we may be seeing our new season of Scrubs sooner than we thought.

Scott Adams wrote:

Wow... was Tracy Morgan not funny. Not even a mild chuckle.

Baldwin excels at comedy, and Scott Adsit ("Pete") is a Second City-Chicago guy who is a comedy powerhouse when given the right material.

Tina was bland but acceptable.

The "Ally McBeal girl" (Jane Krakowski) was useless and somewhat irritating.

Oh well... better luck next time.

Ken wrote:

I kept waiting for something to laugh at, but it never came. This show is not funny and will surely meet an early death. Unfortunately, Twenty Good Years, which IS a funny show, follows 30 Rock and will probably suffer in that time slot simply because 30 Rock sucks.

Brenda wrote:

this show will fall before nov sweeps. only baldwin's denny crane-like character held any promise of a laugh. any scene w/o baldwin was too reminiscent of the neverending bad snl skits. couple the whole thing with the duplication of studio 60's we are not the west wing take on the same subject and i think when they cancel both shows, they should axe snl by default for inspiring both shows! (btw, is it just me or does studio 60 feel like you're trapped in an hourlong walk through the west wing corridors when they bantered back and forth meaningless dialogue?)

moe wrote:

For all of the 6 minutes I watched the show I was very disappoitned the only good thing about the show was they dare themselves to not put in a laugh track Unlike the show following it that had 2 great comics but the laugh track was so out of sink it runied any enjoyment I could have found for it. Overall Wednesday lineup for NBC was complete crap.

Karen wrote:

It had some slow awkward moments, but also a few nuggets, especially the scenes with Alec Baldwin, and that hemmaroid line was priceless. I just don't get what the fervor is over Studio 60. It acts on the premise that we immediately care about these characters when we don't even know them yet. And they all act so smug, it just makes me not want to watch. I feel like the show is constantly patting itself on the back.

anon wrote:

Wow, was that bad... Alec Baldwin deserves his own show, granted. But as for this lousy piece of... just shoot it and put it out of its misery. I'm amazed that the network looked at that pilot and thought "yeah." Ugly.

Stacey wrote:

It was just OK - I was hoping for a lot more from Tina Fey, I think she is very talented, but it just didn't seem like there was any zing to it for a premiere show. I think the Tracy Morgan character is stupid - Love Alec, as usual and even Jane and Racheal did great for their parts. Just can't see a long run here yet.....

CRay wrote:

If episode number 2 isn't any better, 30 Rock will be on an E-ticket ride to the top on deathwatch. It was one of the worst shows I've seen of late.

emey wrote:

Great another un Funny show by the folks at SNL. SNL has gone down hill for the last 10 years and now I can see why. That Tina chic is not funny and should be on welfair not ruining tv shows

Martha McLemore wrote:

This show was a big disappointment to me. I had high hopes, considering the fine actors in this show. I thought it was STUPID. The characters were dull, and brought no life to this dead-end show. I will never watch it again, it is a waste of time.

Thanks.

I tivo'd this and after watching, and NOT laughing for 10 minutes - I hit delete - wasn't even interested in trying to watch the rest of it the next night.

Maureen wrote:

It started pretty funny, even if the acting was a bit stilted. Also, the show they "work" on seems to be very stupid. Jane Krakowski and Tracy Morgan need to go...there were too many people to "keep up with" for a half hour show. Maybe they should approach it a bit more like the Larry David show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and let us see the funny in the ordinary (& occasionally, the EXtraordinary). Fey is a great ad libber--she needs more freedom. Krakowski is annoying...Tina should go get Amy Poehler to do that role, or give it to Rachel Dratch...now that would be funny.

Jason wrote:

Yikes, that was bad. It's moved to the top of my cancelled list. I think the saddest thing was I KNOW Alec can do better, I've seen it...but not here. It's sad that he's wasted on here. Everyone else...just reminded me why I never watch SNL. Tracy Morgan? Are you kidding me?!? I'll give it one more try, but I have a good feeling I may not make it through next week's show in it's entirety...

John wrote:

It was a bit cute Tina Fay walking around with $150 dollars of Hotdogs. But I want some funny not just 30 seconds of cute images.

Marilyn wrote:

Hate it. This show can't be gone soon enough for me. This is so bad it can't begin to compare to "Studio 60". Any good reviews on "30 Rock can't be by anyone that has actually watched this stinker.

tarny wrote:

Okay, #1, why did NBC do two shows centered around the same premise? I like Tina Fey, she's okay, but I think Alec Baldwin steals the show. Tracey Morgan (Tracey Jordan on the show), performance sucked. He's too over the top, and I guess that's what his character is supposed to be, but I'm not feeling him.

Donna wrote:

Yawn! What a giant bore. What were Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey smoking when they signed on to this project? I wasn't expecting much when I tuned in and was still disappointed. So long 30 Rock, I won't be tunning in again.

Ed Sowell wrote:

How BAD does it have to be before they dump this garbage! I have 3 TiVo's so I went ahead and recorded this show in its pilot. I couldn't believe a show could be this bad and so I recorded the second episode to make sure. My God what a STINKER! Probably the most STUPID show on tv. I didn't even crack a smile let alone laugh.

Emy wrote:

I think that 30 Rock is fabulous and should NOT be cancelled. Tina, Alec, Tracy, and the rest are hilarious--and getting better every week!!!!
