Remote Roundup: “Brothers and Sisters”

October 23, 2006

You have to hand it to ABC – somebody in casting got a serious promotion.

“Brothers and Sisters” is one of the most talked about shows around here, and everyone seems to have a strong opinion about it. Some of us TiVo it every week, and some have stopped watching altogether. We’ve heard justifications about watching based entirely on the casting. We’ve also heard some honest defense of the show as the first gem in the long-suffering dearth of good family dramas.

As far as ratings go, last night’s show scored a 8.3, but still scored second behind CBS’ crime dramas: “CSI” and “Without a Trace” (both showed during that hour due to late-ending NFL games). “Brothers and Sisters” sits at Number 9 on the Deathwatch with odds of cancellation at 44:1.

Round up your thoughts here on “Brothers and Sisters” and we’ll talk tomorrow.

I love this show - I've missed Racheal Griffith since Six Feet Under ended. And, it's great to see Sally Fields back. I think this is well written and smart.

Matt wrote:

What an incredible cast! I like that the storyline continues to move forward. The acting is incredible - and who doesn't like an angry Sally Field like she was at the dinner party with her husband's mistress? Flippin' awesome! And since ABC just asked for a full-season, I think I found my new guilty pleasure for this year!

Melissa wrote:

I look forward to this show more than Desperate Housewives! I LOVE Rachel Griffith! She was superb on Six Feet Under - it's great to see her on TV again! The rest of the cast is also fabulous! Sally Fields character is great! She makes me laugh and makes me angry! I love it!

Melissa wrote:

I love this show....it has been a long time since we have seen a great family drama. This is the Thirty-something of the new millenium.

Lee wrote:

I really like this show. The main reason I started watching it is because I love Rachel Griffiths. I must say that I hope they try to develop her character more though and give her more screen time. I don't think she is being used enough for what she is capable of. But I do like the show and I think Sally Field is excellent.

Denise wrote:

Sally Fields is awesome....what an allstar cast!!!! I just got done watching two episodes that i had taped....i just used it as a special treet to myself!!!! Don't get rid of it!!!

Edgeoforever wrote:

I gave it two tries for the cast sake. the second time I couldn't make it through the whole episode.
All I remember in retrospect is the screech Flochart character and the bad writing. The best actor can't cure that.

John wrote:

I like this show very much. The actors are fantastic and the plot is very enticing.
Rachel Griffiths, Sally Field, etc., all very good.
If it keeps up the way it has, I don't think it will be cancelled soon!!!

Liz wrote:

I was instantly interested in watching this show when I saw that it involved Calista Flockhart and Sally Field. Calista has been away far too long. She is an incredible actress. And of course Sally Field is just wonderful. I wasn't that familiar with the rest of the cast but I have grown to love them all. I'm so glad it's going to be on for a full season.

Emma wrote:

I actually look forward to seeing this show every week. The cast is excellent and the story line is very good. This show has the potential to be one of the best shows this season.

Gere wrote:

I really like this show. It keeps getting better week after week especially last nights, i thought there were some pretty funny moments.

KVA wrote:

I think the show is great. It is a great ending to Sunday night television. I think I look forward to it more so than Desperate Housewives. I certainly hope is does not get canceled. What a great cast!

seller wrote:

I love this show. The cast is great and the storylines keep getting better. In my opinion, this is the best of all the new shows.

Lacey wrote:

I would just like to say that I love this show. Not only for the cast, which I absolutly adore Sally Field, but I think this is a show that could last for several seasons with its storylines. Each character has their own story to tell and I think that the show could go in many directions with the whole cast. And I just loved the scene the other week at the party where Field "confronted" her children about trying to find the easiest way to tell her about "the other woman". I was literally yelling at the tv, thought it was one of the best scenes b/c at first I was wondering, how naive are they going to play Field's character. But anyways, I ove this show and think it will stick around!

Lacey wrote:

I just want to say that I love this show not only for the cast but for the storylines. Each character has their own story and this can take the show and the cast in many directions. One of the best scenes was the other week at the pool party when Fields "confronts" her children by saying "My children are trying to figure out a way to tell me that that Holly woman is their father's mistress, and don't know how to conduct themselves in a social manner". I loved this scene b/c at first I was wondering how naive can the make Sally Field. Anyways, I love this show and can't wait to see where the show goes from here.

paige wrote:

seriously? SERIOUSLY? this is easily one of the top 5 worst shows of the season!!! I'm a huge fan of most of the cast but the plot (or should I say lack of a plot) is laughable - I think it's obvious why the whole thing had to be re-tooled before it ever even made it on the air, but they would've been better off killing it altoghether

Aaron wrote:

Seeing as the show got a full season order 7 days ago, I think it's pretty safe for the time being.

Melinda Toungette wrote:

I really like this show. I love Sally Fields and she is casted as a typical mother. This is one show I come home to watch every Sunday.

Phil wrote:

Sally Fields will win an Emmy for this. She could just sleep walk or phone it in but nope. She pulls out all the stops. I thought maybe there would be a one upmanship play between Flockhart and Fields but am great to see this is not the case. For those looking for plot I say no plot? no worries! As Robert Altman once said there are only 6 or 7 stories...the rest is about characters. If you want cut and dried plots watch a crime show. Give me good strong charactes and character development any time. I have to hand it to this cast, they do a lot with a little. Take that diabetes shot scene for instance with the kid....a very deft sketch of several characters over the course of a few seconds. Of all the new shows this is the one I consistently watch the most besides The Nine

brutony wrote:

My sentiments echo Paige's, who's obviously a very astute woman! Whats the show that most of these posters been watching, because it sho 'aint THIS! I was a BIG fan of most of the cast PREVIOUSLY in work they'd been in, but this POS should have been DOA! By the second ep, I was literally checking my DVR to see how long it was going to drone on, blah blah blah! It is good to see Dave Annable, late of Reunion, a show that is truly BBC, and Balthazar Getty, of the dearly departed Pasadena. Nice to see Tom Skerritt on for like 5 minutes-will he be back in flashbacks?

Debbie wrote:

I really wanted to like this show and will probably give it a second chance but there is so much of Sally Field "Steel Magnolia's rant" a person can take.

Skipper wrote:

I've really tried to watch this thing, but found myself snorting at stupid lines and turning away from the screen in disgust. Put this out of its misery.

tamara wrote:

I agree with paige and brutony. What show have the rest of you people been watching? This show is one of the worst of the season. I love most of the cast (Dave Annable, Rachel Griffith, Ron Rifkin, Balthazar Getty, Patricia Wettig) and that's the only reason I'm watching it. Because it's really really really bad. The storylines are getting a little bit more bearable, but if it's having a lot of viewers is just because it's on after Desperate Housewives and it has an outstanding cast. Nothing else.
And I don't even think Sally Fields is that good. At least not in this role. She's one of the worst among the cast, in my opinion. Calista and Sally should go and let the rest carry the show.

Gretchen wrote:

This show reads like a good book...Joyce Carole Oats maybe. It's taking me a while to understand all of the famly relationships but it is unfolding exactly as it should. Uncle Sol will find the money eventually but in the meantime, what a great story. The relationship between the gay son and the mother is too funny and all too true. A big beautiful soap opera with a stellar cast. I need this show on Sunday night!

BetcX wrote:

Perhaps my education has been wasted, but I found two shows this season I feel compelled to plan my life around, Brothers & Sisters and Studio 60. Why, in a world when there are always more bachelors to marry and thousands of more improbable crimes to solve, would anyone want to waste time with an escapest drama? Isn't there room in a TV line up for something for everyone? But then I am still bitter that Cupid did not make it.

Todd wrote:

I think it is funny how three of the posts here reference an agreement with one another and all three of them sound like they were written by the same person. I am starting to think that networks hire people to intentionally sabatoge another show, or turn viewers away before they ever start to watch. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show. I was hooked the moment I first saw it. I grew up in a dysfunctional family, and I always felt like an outcast, or like my family life was no good. I am so glad to see that other families, TV or REAL LIFE, are as screwed up as mine! :")

Leslie wrote:

I love the show. I think it takes time to develop a show with as many strong characters as this one has. If you only have one or two that lead the way it is easier, but to develop the characters for a whole family takes time. I hope ABC gives it time to develop.

Molly wrote:

I think this is the best show of the season. I really hope it sticks around. Awesome cast, interesting story lines.

Amanda wrote:

This show is outstanding. It is my hope it won't get canceled, although I am hearing rumors it will. I record this every week and sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to watch it.

Camille wrote:

This is one of the best shows out there. I am cheering 100% for it to stick around. Coming from a very messed up family myself, it almost makes me feel good to know that people out there know that situations like these exsist in one family. Great cast, great show!!

Max wrote:

Please don't cancel this SHOW!!!! I love the entire cast, even Calista Flockhart who I've never liked before. Besides, it levels out all the silliness after Desperate Housewives. And I HATE Boston Legal! How can they cancel ANYTHING with Sally Field on it?? not to mention the rest of the cast is exquisite. Be warned ABC!

Desiree wrote:

I love this show! Haven't missed an episode yet. But this week it's a "Special Premiere" of Boston Legal???? What happened to Brothers & Sisters?

Kten wrote:

I absolutley love this show. I was a big fan of ALIAS....so I tuned in to Brothers and Sisters when I saw two previous cast members. I think it is a great family drama, something different from all those damn reality shows and CSI, Law and Order, etc. etc. TV needs a family drama....please don't cancel this, I love it!!!

scott wrote:

This happens to be my favorite show this season. I hope that it will have a long run.
