Remote Roundup: Ugly Betty

October 13, 2006

deathwatch_betty_327x300.jpg

We're interested in what you have to say about ABC's "Ugly Betty." This show started out on the Deathwatch at number 2. It's premiere was the highest rated show of the fall season. (10.6 -- 16 million viewers!)

The show currently sits at number 6, with cancellation odds of 20:1. Viewers have remained silent on the import-rejiggered-for-American-audiences. But critics are raving. Last night's episode did a solid 9.3 rating and came in second behind "Survivor: Cook Island."

We're officially opening up the floor to comments. What do you think about "Ugly Betty?"

I tried to watch Ugly Betty last night since all the other shows are not airing because of the baseball and I couldn't watch it all. It's not funny and the story sucks.

FieldMedic wrote:

Jonathan have you considered that maybe you're the one who sucks because Ugly Betty rules!!!

Ugly Betty is lots of fun! It's a solid show with enough silliness to keep me interested.

I love this show!! This is a nice refresing change from the played out reality genre!!!

Walter wrote:

I think it's a good show. I'm the one that tends to root for the underdog. There are funny parts in the show and I hope it does well in the ratings the whole time.

Margoletta wrote:

I liked it. Thought it was amusing. At least as funny as that sit com with Sara Rue, Less Than Perfect. Again - I enjoyed it. It will probably be cancelled. Just like Arrested Development. I'm so underwhelmed with the comedic taste of the general population. Not that Ugly Betty is that good (as AD). I, personally, also miss Joan of Arcadia and Dead Like Me so what do I know? I just pray they keep their hands off The Office, My Name is Earl and, of course, Scrubs. Eh, what can you do?

Gwendolyn wrote:

I absolutely LOVE Ugly Betty!!

Chris wrote:

I enjoy the show. It is camp and way over the top. It isn't a comedy and some of the situations are kind of weird. I feel sorry for Betty because she is trying so hard to be accepted there isn't any way that the people she works with are going to do that right now. Maybe somewhere along the way she'll make more and more friends and finally get the respect she deserves. I think her boss is starting to realize what an asset she is to him and when he comes around she may be accepted in spite of all the office politics.

Harry wrote:

Ugly Betty is the best new show this fall. I don't think it will get the ax soon, considering the high ratings (#1 for new shows) and its brilliant writing and performances. America Ferrara should win the Emmy. Her gay-in-training little brother Justin is weird but hilarious.

Mel wrote:

I love America as "ugly" Betty! Unfortunetly, I don't know if the show is going to live to see another season. The "dark side" of the show with the former editor is so over the top and dumb. And I don't get why we see so much of Betty's father's spanish soap opera??? I think the show would be a winner if they cut that all out, keep it to a normal 30-min sitcom, and just focus on Betty and her boss. Whatever happens, I'll watch it till the end. :)

Kristin Matsumoto wrote:

I like "Ugly Betty" but I give this show one season and then it's gone.

Susan wrote:

I've watched all episodes thus far and thoroughly enjoy this show. The melodramatic aspects are a hoot, especially in contrast to how genuine and refreshing Betty, her family and friends are. Very entertaining! It's my favorite new show of the season.

Sue G. wrote:

I watched it last week and this week (missed the premiere) and I'm starting to really like Ugly Betty. It has it's uncomfortable moments like The Office, but it's because I felt the same as Betty in particular instances. I think it's a great show.. it just gives me wiggle moments sometimes.

soccerlover9997 wrote:

Ugly Betty is too cute to be bad. With all of its quirkiness, it's bound to get good reviews. America Ferrera is very enjoyable to watch. Will it last past this season? Who knows. But as for now, Ugly Betty is here to stay.

Brenda wrote:

I LOVE the show!! It has comedy and drama. It's different. I don't miss it.

Elise wrote:

I'm tryign to get into it
and watch it
but it is fairly boring
and thats exactly the kinda thing im intersted in!

Brina wrote:

I actually like the show and have seen all 3/4 or so episodes. It makes a good point and makes light of how superficial life is. I wouldn't be surprised if it's cut though..If U could cancel a drama with a Female President ..why not a show that points out the importance of character, ambition and ability..and less on something (looks)

Andrew wrote:

I love this show, I beileive it is something new here in America, and I really would be sad if it got cancelled, no doubt many others would be since pretty much everyone I know also watches it, also to Jonatahn, I agree, and the show is somewhat hard to watch in the middle, but if you watched it from the very starting you would understand, and to me, and alot of my friends, it is funny. Anyways over all I give it a 9/10, I really like it, and at the moment it is my second favorite, behind Desperate House wives.

MJ wrote:

I've been watching from the first episode and the story line is good, but come on, she works in the fashion industry and doesn't realize what it takes to "fit in?" She may be trying to establish her "individuality," but how many episodes do we have to watch before she actually gets the makeover that you know is in the workings for her? (e.g. the braces, the glasses, etc.)

Randy wrote:

I think America is perfect as the role of Betty! She really makes the show funny (but I think the actor that plays her nephew steals the show!)I hope it doesn't get cancelled becasue now I'm hooked. In response to the viewer who said it's not funny and the story sucks try watching the past episodes on abc.com. You'll get a better understanding of the storyline. Give Betty a chance!

anonymus wrote:

What's wrong with you Critics!!!!!! Can't you see America LOVES this show?! Are you trying to torture us...'er somethin'?!

linda wrote:

I think it's a great show, but it may potentially get old. How many times can the plot revolve around "Oh no! Betty doesn't fit in with the skinny models at mode!" and "Oh no! Danielw as underestimated, but Betty helped him through it!"

Cindy wrote:

I like the show. It is probably my favorite new show for the season.

TJ wrote:

This is seriously one of the best shows that has come around in a long time. It's campy, fun, and one of the truly well-cast shows I have seen in a long time. The secondary players are who really carry this show, along with Betty, of course, who is fantastic. Vanessa Williams is hilraiously evil, and Betty's sister and brother are two of the funnier cast members you will ever see. This show is bold on so many levels that ABC has GOT to keep it on the air and give it a fair chance. I strongly advise you to watch. You can catch up by going to ABC's website and watching the first three episodes.

Nancy wrote:

Love it, love it, love it! Definitely my favorite of all the new fall entries making their debut. This show has a great future ahead of it... terrific writing and great cast. A refreshing change from the glut of crime shows choking the airwaves.

Pat wrote:

I think it's okay. I'll tune in to watch it , but, I won't be too upset if I happen to miss it.

Larry wrote:

I was surprised when I enjoyed this show. It seemed an unlikely candidate for success, but America Ferrara is charmingly sincere in creating a character who's striving for success against huge odds. She works really hard, hurts when shot down and lights up when she's happy. Who can't relate to that?

Angelica2462 wrote:

I really like this show. I remember the main character from Real Women Have Curves and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. She is NOT the typical hollywood actress. She's more human, down to earth, like everyday people. I hope they leaveher character the way she is and not give in to changing her look to make her fit into the model mold. Not only do I watch the show when it airs but on the weekend I go online and watch it again without commercials. Keep up the good work and leave it as it is.

Tracy wrote:

I love Ugly Betty. The characters are well developed and easy to keep up with. Vanessa Williams is just delicious as the "evil queen" and her assistant cracks me up. America is perfect as Betty. She's done her homework. Most of us are not runway/fashion magazine models. We have goofy family members and strange relationships with exes and co-workers. We tolerate our bosses because we really need our jobs. Betty makes the best of every situation. Though difficult in her work environment, she's made friends, she has a family who loves and stands by her and, most importantly, she has a sense of herself that most TV characters lack. I love the show and think it has a lot of potential.

Lesa wrote:

Ugly Betty is a great show for mothers and daughters to watch together. It has a Soapdish camp to it. And America Ferrera might just change Americans notions of what is beautiful. Selma Hyak doing Hitchcockian cameos is perfect.

toni wrote:

AWESOME! so good it is nasty, ABC got this adaptation right. Anybody who doesn't like it obviously is humorless

J-Man wrote:

I'm sorry, but plainly put this show BLOWS!
Cancel it now please!

Zhenia wrote:

I love Ugly Betty, I love the original Columbian version and this one is different but also funny and very well done. They keep it funny and don't take themselves too seriously which is what other shows have tried to do. It is what it is, campy and fun.

Harry wrote:

"Ugly Betty" has been picked up by ABC for the entire season (22 episodes). It will not be cancelled. It officially joins "Heroes" as the survivors of this fall season. Woo hoo! Both my favorite shows survive. I don't care about the rest.

Lisa wrote:

I absolutely love this show!!!! It's funny and smart, and America Ferrera is an extremely talented actress. I've been telling all my friends they need to watch it, and when they do, they agree that it is hilarious!

TS wrote:

Buh-bye Betty. I don't see this lasting because of the curse of Vanessa Williams.

Patricia wrote:

Ugly Betty is fabulous! I look forward to watching it more than I do Lost or Grey's so far this season! The plots aren't surprising or incredibly original, but the characters are infinitely lovable (or hateable as the case might be), and that's what keeps me tuned in and always wanting more :)

smmoe1997 wrote:

Ugly Betty rocks! The shows they have on tv in the show? Those crack me up, especially Salma Hayek in the soap. But I like that the characters already to seem to have grown and learned in the few episodes that have aired. Betty's boss has already kind of won me over, he's such a womanizer, but he has feelings and is starting care for Betty's feelings too.

dez wrote:

I LOVE UGLY BETTY! This show is gonna stick around for a while!

Shana wrote:

I had high hopes for this show but it blows so badly. Is it supposed to be a drama or a comedy??? I have no idea but it certainly was promoted like it was going to be funny. Well, it's not and it isn't even mildly interesting in any respect.

Sadye wrote:

I've seen the spanish verison's of "Ugly Betty".
And I prefer them more than the english verison. "Betty, La Fea" which started it all, had the perfect cast and storyline that Ugly Betty is lacking. "La Fea Mas Bella" (The ugly very pretty)has great comdey and romance. Also most importantly "la Cuatel de la feas" (ugly receptionists club. That one friend Betty has at work is a joke compared to what the producers could of done with the ugly club.
Ugly Betty has it roots and I would hate to see it come undone by writers who haven't seen the many versiones that are out there. Work around what does work and change what doesn't. Don't go for the cheap drama or I'm dead, but I'm really not dead thing.

Ted wrote:

I hope and pray that the majority of those listed above are some kind of vocal minority. It's SUCH a bad show. Other than the lead actress, not one of the cast members could pull off a decent performance if their lives (or the shows life, for that matter) depended on it. But even the round homely girl can't salvage that absolute wreck of a show. My boyfriend forces me to watch it each week, and I can honestly say that I've cried every episode from start to finish. When the credits start to roll, it's as if I am emerging from a bout of near-suicidal depression. I can just assume that the shows ratings are a result of individuals across America attempting to torture their significant others to death.

I've watched Survivor every season so far, but this time I'm watching Ugly Betty instead. It's light and funny and unlike anything else on TV. Great show!

We really like the underdog thing. My Daughter gets Betty's marching to her own drummer, and getting away with it.

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. I'm a big fan of edgy comedy ,e.g. My Name Is Earl, The Office, and dark drama, e.g. Cold Case, Battlestar Galactica. I have missed ALL of this season's Earl and Office because my wife and I both love Betty.

MeMe wrote:

What a treat from most of the run of the mile shows airing today...we can not wait to see Betty transformed into the beauty she is..

Jack wrote:

This is a mildly entertaining show, so far. As far as its future is concerned, I think it will be this year's Joan of Arcadia. It will get strong ratings for a year and then quickly crash and burn, because it is a one-joke show. The "Betty is an outcast" schtick will get old in a hurry. Very few men will watch this show. It deals with girly subjects, plus men will be frustrated with the whole premise of the show, because Betty is actually a fairly cute girl. Men think "I wouldn't mind going out with Betty" and then have to spend an hour watching people who don't get that. Women will stick around longer but they will get bored soon, too.

Star Mormon wrote:

The best new show of the season. I wish it years of success. Well done ABC!

Melanie wrote:

When I saw previews for Ugly Betty I thought it looked really cute and planned on watching the pilot. When the pilot aired I really could only stand to watch it 8 minutes tops and then it just got rediculous. I wouldn't watch it again.

S.Harbin wrote:

Ugly Betty's previews made me not want to watch it from the get. It looked stupid and downgrading. Besides that I would not watch it instead of SURVIVOR or CSI or anythingelse .

Matt wrote:

We like this show. We laugh, we feel for Betty when the office bitches are mean to her. Love to hate Willamina (sp) and her assistant. Betty's genius and ingenuity shine when she sees the issues differently because she hasn't been jaded by the fashion world (yet).

vertigomac wrote:

I like the show; it's fun and campy and well-written. The only problem I can see is keeping the "misfit" premise going. If Betty doesn't slowly change, or her work place doesn't change, the show will get stale. But that's the show's focus, so I'm hoping this doesn't just become a one trick pony.

Javier wrote:

I love this show because it's different. It's unlike any other show we've seen in a long time. I think it will do for comedy what Lost did for drama. It's a nice change, it makes me laugh, the characters are all so unique and well played (especially Betty's queeny little nephew!). I think people who can laugh at things that one has to think about a little bit will enjoy the show. Someone who laughs at a man getting kicked in the crotch probably won't see why people think it's so funny.

Penny Jongsma wrote:

Ugly Betty is funny, witty and very refreshing. Looked forward to it all summer when the ads were hyping it. We (husband and I both) know that America (Betty) will change as the show goes on but hoefully not too quickly or too much. She is a very appealing character.

john wrote:

I love it!!!!!! Might not be the funniest show, but unlike other sitcoms it deals with "reality" and makes a statement.

Heather wrote:

I really like this show. I do wish that Betty would tell everyone off and Daniel would stick with it. The strange plot revolving around the elder Meade ( I love this actor as a villian. Great casting!!) and his "murder" of Faye is very confusing yet strangly amusing. I am hoping to see more.

Holly wrote:

I like it, better than i thought I would. I think the dark, evil, woman is a bit over the top. But I really like Betty, she's real. Reminds me of a lot of people out there, perhaps a bit exaggerated, but that is TV for you. But I like that she is smart and normal. It's a good show and hope it sticks around.

EJC wrote:

I like it. It's escape TV. No drama, just fun.

Martha K wrote:

We love Ugly Betty, its funny, its a little soapy, and its a little outrageous. I am surprised by some turns in the show, so its not boring. The acting is pretty good, and I really, really hate the snooty skinny rich people who have no depth whatsoever, which makes this show especially fun to watch.

Carly wrote:

I LOVE UGLY BETTY! Its very refreshing to see a show that isn't all about being beautiful, and it shows the being who you are is going to get you somewhere too. Hopefully it will change the way girls are in the future. I think its a great show and will probably last at least 2 more seasons. Its has comedy and a realness about it too.

Victoria wrote:

When I heard this show was being developed for the US I was skeptical, I watch the mexican version and didn't think it would work in the US especially the way it was written for Mexico but it is a very smart comedy and it's been revamped well for the US. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the episodes I've watched.

not interested wrote:

What an awful show. I tried to watch a little bit of it, since sports had overtaken the other network channels. Ugh. It's viewership was only so high because it premiered later in the season, so the viewers weren't as jazzed about their favorite shows. In a couple weeks, it'll be higher on the death watch.
But then, what do I know? I can't stand the Simpsons, and that show has been around for what, 20 years now? I hate it, the majority of people love it. :)

D Jeanette wrote:

I like Ugly Betty, however, I don't believe that it will make it to the end of this season...will all of the wonderful people in charge of fashion and beauty sit back and let America convince America that beauty really IS in the eye of the beholder and that no matter how pretty the package, if the inside is rotten, then the whole thing is ugly?...I don't think they will.....

Becca wrote:

I think this show was ok, however it was boring and the story line was to see through. Obviously you know where this is going to go. Shes going to become a fashion diva and everyone will love her yada yada.

KR wrote:

I think this show is "cute", and generally enjoy watching it, however; I find Vanessa Williams' character extremely annoying. Since the rest of the show isn't a cartoon, her Cruella DeVille-esque performance is just too over the top. I also realize that this is a comedy of sorts, but one question has bothered me since the begining of the show: if Betty and her family are so poor that they can't pay for her father's prescription medication, why does Betty have braces? Has anyone in Hollywood actually priced-out orthdontia work lately?

Brandy wrote:

I love Ugly Betty! I've been 'reality tv'd' out! This is a fresh approach to the classic sitcom. I hope to see "Ugly" around for a long time.

D L Steinly wrote:

America loves this show... Who knows why, bottom line is the numbers, if it's got the ratings it will get the airtime.

Not my cup of tea at all. The few minutes I've seen were painful to say the least. Guess I'm just not a mainstream person...

Stefanie wrote:

This show is alright....but it seems like they're bringing "DEVIL WEARS PRADA" to the small screen....which I heard was a plan anyway....its like these days no one can come up with an original idea....they keep bringing back classics and redoing them...or trying to ride on the tail of a good recent movie and pull every trick out of the hat to keep it going. Damn....just come up with something new instead of leaning on things that have come and gone!!!!

Stacey wrote:

I adore this show. America does a tremendous job in this role - she is adorable. I enjoy rooting for the underdog!!

Angely wrote:

I love this show. Some of you take everything to serious, it's a show. The reason for the dad's novelas is because this show comes from a novela. For those of you who grew up or still watch novelas, you'll notice very well known Mexican actresses in each novela. I think it's brilliant the way they incorporate that. As far as Vanessa William's character there is always on of those in the Novelas. Git it a try American's. It's brilliant and I'm glad they picked it up for the reset of the season.

A. Nicole wrote:

Ugly Betty isn't the greatest but it is fun and in a perfect time slot. I hope it sticks around a bit longer.

I love Ugly Betty! The best new show this year!

John wrote:

>

For the record, if you missed the first episode, there was a sequence where Betty was doing battle with her father's HMO over his heart medication.

Also, what people are failing to pick up on is the satrical voice of the show, where it deglamorizes the fashion industry and pokes fun at it, just as Desperate Housewives takes dead aim at the mommy myth and suburbian life. Granted, the creative team had to tone everything down to make it more acceptable to American tastes, but if you pick up on the issues the show raised thus far, what you have is a subversive attack on the celebrity culture, of which the fashion industry is part of.

>

Again, that is the beauty of the serial format, where there are story arcs and threads that continue from show to show. This is used to point out further how Betty (and even her boss) are way over their heads yet are so interdependent on each other to keep their heads above water in that shark-infested environment.

I think there might be some who are looking to a possible coupling of Betty's nephew Justin and Willamina's assistant. I think that in Justin, he may have finally met his match.

Amy wrote:

Ugly Betty is such a relief from all the dramas on TV these days. It's funny. I think a lot of people can relate to the character, trying to be herself but also wanting to fit in and be accepted by her peers. I love America in this.

Kristin M wrote:

Cute, funny I love this show. My daughter is also hooked! Refreshing! Vanessa Williams character is a trip. Reminds me of The Devil Wears Prada!

Karen wrote:

I love this show!! I didn't think I would but since I loved Devil wears Prada and this show seems to be a total take I figured I would give it a shot. I enjoy all the characters, even the snooty, snippy ones! This is just a fun show!!

Jo wrote:

Love the show! Very funny and cute; ‘Dramedy’ is the way to go…!!!

MJ wrote:

I have watched this show 3 times. There is alot of humor but it does have it's dry moments. Consistancy is its biggest problem and I don't like the storyline with the father and the "lets cover up me trying to kill the former editor" who is still alive. Too easy to figure out. I enjoy Betty and her family and most of the characters at the magazine. But I have a feeling that after one season - the show has nowhere to go with the way it is being written.

EM wrote:

This show is a great new addition to the tiny pool of good comedies on television. However, putting it up against My Name is Earl and The Office robs the show of many potential viewers. Given a better time slot, this show will draw in twice the number of viewers. People are hungry for laughs!

E wrote:

Ugly Betty is a quirky, fun-to-watch show. Those who don't get it's simple presmise won't enjoy it.

The acting is supposed to be over-the-top.

It's better than most shows on network TV today. One reason is because it's not cookie cutter TV.

Someone decided to take a gamble... and it's paying off.

chuck wrote:

Unbelievable! This is one of the lamest offerings of the season. I'm giving it another 3 weeks to improve before it goes off my see/tape list.

Jennifer Chiasson wrote:

Well I personally love ugly betty. It is, it seems, more of a womans shows ... or at least feminine. since it deals with fashion and body image etc. It's cute and fun and well done and really hits home to women who have had any issues with self esteem. The empathy scale between viewers and this character are probably really high.
Of course there does have to be some evolution in ths show. not saying there won't be because only 3 shows have aired so far. but it'sx tricky to deal with betty's image, you dont want her to become a plastic but she cannot stay the same... and of course the romance interests are very important to any tv show. And the intrigue by the boss father and the supposedly dead fashionista.
There is a lot of good stuff going on in this show. we might all be too quick to judge, the show did just come out. i think best is to wait and see. But I personally like it alot and never miss an episode.

memphisbelle wrote:

I love this show!!

I also would like to see them focus more on the office that at home.

I also would like to see Betty evolve, both in her appearance and her attitude. But it has to be done slowly.

Vanessa Williams needs to tone down the "cartoon-like" approach to her character. Also, her assistant.

I hope the show stays on long enough for the improvements to be put in place. It has the makings of a long running sitcom.

Laurie Anderson wrote:

There are too many shows on tv that want you to force you to laugh. I love to laugh out loud with Ugly Betty!!!! Not everyone in this world is a size 0 and I love her for her personality, family and caring for her job and life. I hope that they keep it on because I look forward to watching it every week! Go Betty!!!!

Epifanio wrote:

Ugly Betty is refreshing and America is truly beatuful in the role. I do feel that more concentration should be placed on Betty's family dynamics. It's important to see more of the cultural aspects of Hispanics who live in the United States. Hispanic culture is very conservative and Betty's nephew's flamboyant nature contrary to how a typical American family would view his behavior. Is Justin's acceptance typical of Hispanic culture? Is Betty's ambition contrary to the role Hispanic women traditionally hold? These are issues the program should address. Hispanics are HUNGRY for television programming that addresses their particular niche. I applaud this effort!
