Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip

Rumors are flying that NBC's Aaron Sorkin drama, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, is on the verge of cancellation. Or will it be another "hiatus" fade-out? No final verdict yet, and the network did just order three more episodes. Frankly, we're not sure what to think.

Ratings have been dropping. Most significantly, "Studio 60" is losing about 50 percent of it's lead-in from "Heroes." (Down to 7.7 million viewers last week after "Heroes" had 14.3 million.)

Why the ratings slump? Critics like the quick and clever dialogue, but many outlets are saying that the comedy show "Studio 60" surrounds simply isn't funny. So is the drama being criticized because it's not a comedy? Could be....

We like that the show revived "Network"-like conversation. But at the end of the day, bringing the gravitas of "The West Wing" to late night comedy wasn't a good fit. Running a TV show, as much as TV writers and producers might like to think, isn't quite as important as running the country.

This show is is one of the few I look forward to of all the new fall shows. They should consider moving the time slot to increase viewers. The writing is every bit a good as the West Wing was. Give this show a chance.

Dude, if this show bites it I'd better see episodes showing up on the BrilliantbutCancelled podcast! I've been stuck to it just like I was to Touching Evil (man, I miss that show)!

Megan wrote:

Studio 60 is perhaps the best new show on television. It's too smart? It's not funny enough? Boo-hoo. It's being cancelled because NBC is a cut-rate discount network right now and can't afford an actor that costs more than the clown you hired for your 6 year olds birthday party. Why punish viewers because NBC is going down faster than Bush's approval rating?

I hope a decent network picks up on this fine show.

Larry wrote:

Plodding, pedantic and ponderous. The show couldn't even hang on to its initial audience. I say cancel the sucker and let Aaron Sorkin do something fresh.

Thomas Richardson wrote:

"Studio 60" deserves to die.

I live in Texas. It so annoys me that all these TV executives in NYC and L.A. greenlight shows set in -- NYC and L.A. One of the reasons I like "CSI" and "CSI: Miami" is that they're set somewhere else than NYC and L.A. I don't know who at NBC approved "Friday Night Lights," but the governor of Texas should send him/her a gift basket.

And if it's narcissistic for a TV exec to set a TV show in his own town, how much more so to set a TV show in his own industry? What, do you really think that _I _ think that arguments about appeasing the FCC make fascinating television?

Worse, this show is backstage at a "Saturday Night Live" type show. Well, IMHO "Saturday Night Live" should have been cancelled twenty years ago -- only the opening skit and "Weekend Update" are worth watching, everything else is laughless filler. So why would I want to watch _either_ "backstage at SNL" show?

Whose idea was it to approve _either_ "Studio 60" or "30 Rock"? Whose idea was it to approve _both_? HAVE THE NBC EXECUTIVES GOT SO LITTLE BRAVERY, AND SO LITTLE IMAGINATION?

"The West Wing" dealt with things that mattered. Jeb Bartlett, a nice guy, knew that if he screwed up, Americans would suffer and the country would suffer; oftentimes his mistake would mean that the world might suffer. _This_ made for gripping television! Now on "Studio 60," if these two guys screw up, the show gets low ratings, or even gets cancelled. Guess what -- I don't care.

So why was "Studio 60" even allowed on the air? Why was "30 Rock" put on? Because Aaron Sorkin and Tina Fey have a Track Record. And apparently a Track Record counts at NBC more than common sense. I can see NBC execs holding a seance, asking Aaron Spelling what to do. And if the ghost of Aaron Spelling said, "Bring back `My Mother the Car'," there would be five MMtC clones coming soon to NBC as midseason replacements.

Someone should have told Sorkin to write a show about "backstage at NBC Nightly News." The conflicts among the characters would have been about Truth, and Journalistic Ethics, and Censorship, not friggin' Nielsen points.

It's a good show. A REALLY good show. It's not off the air yet, and maybe it'll find life elsewhere -- like Bravo. They will want 13 episodes to be able to synicate it, so don't count on more than that. It's not gone, yet, folks, so let's enjoy it while we can.

Of course, since I like this show it's up for cancellation! What's wrong with smart TV? This is the only new show this fall I've been following.

Deborah Decker wrote:

AJ, the American version of Touching Evil was based on a British series of the same name starring Robson Greene. The American version duplicated the British almost word for word. The only changes were location (i.e., San Francisco for London, etc.) If you liked the American version, check out the British version. The American series is actually a rather pale imitation.

hey, Meg-Gan,,Get yourself a clue, a RAGING clue!Your comments are EXACTLY why Studio 60 is getting whacked! Going down lower than Bush's arpproval ratings? His ratings are going UP, for your liberal-minded backwards information, and people dont want another Left Wing-style slow moving fast talking DemonCrap oriented comedy about a late night variety show! Oy Vey! This is such a colossal waste of time, I was actually looking forward to Friday Night Lights last night, just so I wouldnt have to watch this POS! Next time, Meg-Gan, leave your politics at the door, and wake up and smell the coffee! Seacrest, OUT!

TVSeriesFinale.com wrote:

It's a great show -- well produced and acted but ultimately not as groundbreaking as West Wing. Losing over 6 million from Heroes' lead-in is pretty bad but I think it could do better if was paired with another show.

Pres. Bartlett wrote:

Thank God! More room for good shows on my TiVo.

Jess wrote:

The money-hungry network brass has become too quick to pull shows from the air. Just think what pop culture would be today if they had the same views 25 years ago....."Cheers" would have never made it through the first 13 episodes. I look forward to "Studio 60" every week. It reminds me of "Sports Night" which was another great Sorkin project that was cut short because of greed.

Adam wrote:

So, this show is getting cancelled because it's too good? Are some people afraid of the smart, witty dialogue? This is one of the BEST shows on T.V.

I have to agree with Megan, NBC is probably just TOO cheap to actually fit the bill for this show. Instead, they'll sink money into another "Twenty Good Years"- type show, which will also get cancelled. CBS needs to buy this show, and they'll be able to throw some money behind it.

I'll be really disappointed if this show leaves the airwaves. If it does, then T.V. stations have truly lost the ability to do their job.

Paul Freeman wrote:

Seems to me that S60 represents too narrow a canvas to hold a large audience. As a blogger in the UK commented, perhaps AS would have been better employed basing the show on the network, rather than a single show. That way he could have moved into and out of various shows and - as Thomas Richardson pointed out - that :- "....backstage at NBC Nightly News." [for example] The conflicts among the characters would have been about Truth, and Journalistic Ethics, and Censorship, not friggin' Nielsen points.

Shame, really. I feel the axeman limbering up....

Bo M. wrote:

They should at the very least try moving it to another night before pulling it. Of course it's losing a large portion of the Heroes crowd. The two shoes have very little in common. Personally I love them both, but it seems obvious that they don't cater to the same general groups. I think many intended viewers mistake the intent of the show because they see references to a "SNL" behind the scenes show starring Matthew Perry and either dismiss it as comedy. Others hoping to find a comedy end up disappointed when they tune in. The show needs some time for word of mouth to find it's audience and a more appropriate lead in show sure wouldn't hurt.

Justin T. wrote:

Studio 60 is way too good to be cancelled. Honestly, why don't they do what they did this week permanently? Flip flop Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is great too, but it can take the lead in from "Heroes" which is getting a good pick up from the teen demographic. Then give Studio 60 some breathing room on Tuesday nights against what I think is pretty lackluster competition.

Let's face it. Heroes and Studio 60 could not have less in common.

Ron wrote:

Great show that is in a horrible time slot. Its not a smart choice to have this show after Heros. Two very different types of shows.

Also 10:00 p.m. is a rough time for the the demographic that would mostly like watch this show.

I love the show, I could do without the skits most times becuase they just aren't that funny.
Last thing is it is to bad that life does not imitate life. Amanda Pate's (spelling lol) turns down a reality sho because of the kind of garbage that kind of programing is and green lights an imaginitive idea for a show. It was reported in a USA Today article that because NBC feels they fail at the 8:00-9:00 time slot with sitcoms and dramas, they will now switch to more unscripted tv, ie gameshows and reality garbage tv.
They fail at the 8:00-9:00 time slot because their shows just aren't that good. CBS and Fox both are killing with their shows int he 8-9 time slot.

Blasapher wrote:

Please, PLEASE, don't cancel this show! It's awesome! The chemistry between Bradley and Matthew is wonderful. The writing is superb, the character development has been great, and the acting is top-notch.

It’s on a horrible night! I have to TiVo it to watch it. When do I watch it? Thursday night after Grey’s Anatomy. Here is an idea, move it to Thursday night and put ER on Monday. (Is anyone still watching ER? Seriously?)

Don’t cancel Studio 60! Don’t send it to an early grave like Boomtown, Once and Again or My So Called Life. (I realize some of these weren’t NBC shows, but they were all loved by many and cancelled anyway.)

We have gotten all of our friends to watch it and they LOVE IT TO. Please please let this show stick around.

JD wrote:

yeah, I agree with Bo M., when Sports Night came out, it took awhile for me to realize it was a brilliant show, and not another sports recap thing, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Studio 60 has great writing and great acting. It just needs some time for its audience to find it.

Leslie wrote:

I'm the one that watches Studio 60 but doesn't watch Heroes. I like the cast. I do like the network angles a lot, but I can understand how the network has to make one show work to use it as a base to build the others. I also liked the story about passing on the reality show because it dumbed down their viewers. Imagine trying to make Americans smarter. Who'd have thunk it?

KJ wrote:

Studio 60 is the best new show this season! To Thomas and Paige... I am another TEXAN who loves the witty writing and the great chemistry between the actors. If NBC can't handle it, then maybe Studio 60 needs to move to a network that can give it the PROMOTION and timeslot it deserves! Maybe instead of running ads like "Save the Cheerleader Save the World" they could spend their $$ on REAL advertising!

Susan E. wrote:

I'm another person who loves Studio 60, and lives in Texas. Do we really need to have shows like "Friday Night Lights" to show the rest of the country just how much Texans pray to the holy goal posts?

We need shows like Studio 60, with intelligent dialog, and incredibly good writing, to show our children that there is something out there besides football and reality tv.

Casey wrote:

I would take this show over two dozen Deal or No Deal and Survivor lookalikes any day of the week. Find it a decent time slot, and I bet the predatory nature of this beast comes out to play and play hard. No cast can be expected to perform cohesively if they feel like their throats are about to be slit by their own management.

Pairing Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry is a stroke of genius with just a sprinkle of slapstick hiding in the wings. However, with the exception of DL Hughley and Timothy Busfield, the balance of the cast seems reluctant to put their feet on the pedals, but I can't recall a brand new show that's been completely smooth right out of the can... even West Wing had a growth curve before it straightened out and flew right. The Harriet Hayes + Matt Albie relationship feels strained, hesitant and painfully realistic.

The very definition of prime time is shifting with the increased availability of on-demand viewing. NBC: get this precious gem of a new show into a soft slot, let it germinate and put down proper roots. Somehow I sense there are enough fans like me who will gratefully TiVo or website-watch as our own prime time schedules permit (my personal prime-time is 3:00 to 7:30 PM - fit it in there and I'd even watch it LIVE! Otherwise, I'm glad to watch it whenever I can.)

It's a really sad state when shows that are well written, well-acted, and balance drama, wit and well-timed comedy (remember Arrested Development?) are dropped. If the networks play down to the lowest common denominator, and fill the airwaves with silly comedies and mindless reality shows, what kind of message are they sending? In the end, the viewers lose. Perhaps this show would have been better on HBO?

Stogoe wrote:

God, Aaron Sorkin is overrated, and the actors on this show need to be taken out and beaten. Dreck. Pure dreck. Even 30 Rock is funnier, and it's got Alec Baldwin for god's sake.

Cathy B. wrote:

SS60 is one of the best shows out this fall and NBC wants to cancel it??? It's far better than some of the other shows out there but because some fool put it on a "wrong" night, they're going to ax it? Shame on NBC....it's like the CBS farce of Cagney & Lacey (in the 80's for all you kids out there!)

Osbo wrote:

Studio 60 is one of the best shows on television. The characters are well thought out, lively, and each actor is giving the performance of their life. However, Heroes isn't a compatible show for it. Largely the only reason I watch it is because it comes before Studio 60.

30 Rock happens to also be an excellent show, but they take different approaches.

Studio 60 looks at real lives, and how they entertwine. It's an office drama with a lot of potential.

latwaun wrote:

Good-bye to this racist piece of propaganda. We know that sorkin is a racist who only writes about his drug experiences with the white man. This show is garbage, from its 'The View' second-rate writers to its holier-than-thou art the white man narratives. Where is the black man on the show? Selling the crack, of course! The Asian is absent, and the Mexican is parking the cars of the stars, all of camera of course, as you wouldn't want to sully your show with diversity.

Its just sad that AMerica really hasn't changed. All of you white-bread folks support your racist second-rate show and never look beyond the pool and jacuzzi in your backyard to see that there are actually people in America who want quality TV, and not this, and want to see what America could be, instead of this socialistic hypocrytical left-wing KKK puff piece of Sorkin and Perry. Get a clue, west coast, and stop being such race-haters!

tdeezie wrote:

I think that Studio 60 is a diamond in the rough! I happen to believe that the "liberal" feel is discouraging some viewers, and thats what makes it so good. The fact that they arent affraid to touch on subjects that are sticky in america today, makes it worth watching. I was like some of you, when the show first aired. I wasn't interested, especially after Heros (my favorite new show) - but I watched it anyway. And althogh its got some rough edges, every episode there's a glimpse of brillance in how the writing, story, and characters come together. The past few episodes have had a wonderful mix of drama, comedy, and real life. Oh yea, S60 is not meant to be a comedy - thats obvious...its a drama about a comedy sketch show! So there are going to be some funny scenes, and humor added in the script, but its obvious that its not a comedy! And whoever said that Friday Night Lights was an accurate representation of Texas life was FLAT OUT WRONG - yes, maybe in the rural/suburbian la-la life of some (i can say because im from one of those type of places) but in reality there are some just like those from the cast of S60.

tdeezie wrote:

to Latwaun - did you happen to actually watch the show? The last show was absolutely brilliant when they dealt with D.L. Hugley's character wanting more blacks on the show.....I think they hit the nail on the head with that episode.

Matt wrote:

Studio 60 was a good show. In truth I thought the first episode was great. I have still remained a loyal viewer but, the episodes have continually gone down hill for me. And I really don't think the comedy on the show is funny either. If the show is supposed to be about an SNL type show then shouldn't the comedy still be funny. The other day I was watching and I couldn't help it after 10 minutes the show bored me so I turned it off. Sadly I must say this show just needs to go.

Reelmystic wrote:

Studio 60 is a great show -- clever, layered, intelligent, which is why it isn't finding an audience among idiotic American tv viewers who are typically entranced by bright, shiny objects and braindead broadcasting like "Dancing With the Stars" and "Survivor".

Studio 60 is also gutsy and real. As for the stuff about the "show within a show" not being real funny -- have you actually watched "Saturday Night Live" lately? Not a much of a yuk-fest there

The most recent episode involved a sketch about hiring Jesus Christ as network Standards and Practices chief and asking him if it was alright to take the lord's name in vein on network television. "Yeah sure. I had nails driven through my palms and ankles, rocks thrown at me -- but what I'm really worried about is being called names!"

Compared to the anemic "30 Rock" --a show that really is supposed to be funny -- "Studio 60" is a laugh riot. And, let me reiterate, it's a drama folks!

Teresa wrote:

Hi all,

I just wanted to clarify a few points. First of all, after reading so many comparison comments, I felt compelled to point out that S60 fans and Survivor fans are not mutually exclusive. I happen to watch and enjoy both, and I am fairly normal by most standards. I have an MBA and a career that puts it to good use, but I like to unwind and escape with television as much as the next person. Some of my friends refer to their favorite reality shows as their "guilty pleasure" shows but why feel guilty about watching something you enjoy? People have diverse interests and that is what makes us so interesting. Also, to latwuan...you proved yourself to be a hypocrite in your 11/4 rant about racism. The last time I checked, calling a person or a group of people "white-bread" wasn't exactly a term of endearment. And in response to brutony's post from 10/31...try reading a good book sometime, or maybe you could explore a new hobby. Wouldn't that be more constructive and enjoyable than torturing yourself by sitting in front of a television forcing yourself to watch programs you do not enjoy? There is an off button on your remote for a reason.

Dianne wrote:

I miss it already!! what is NBC thinking???? This is the best show to hit TV in eons. Maybe the humor is a little too sophisticated for the average viewer - it certainly is fast paced - but thoroughly entertaining!! Find a better slot - I vote with the Thursday night idea - best night on TV!!!

Lars wrote:

Can we stop playing down to the lowest common denominator. Shows like Studio 60 are to the NBC line up is as Golf is to sports broadcasting. Sure it gets fewer viewers than auto racing, but the clientele is higher. People who "get" Studio 60 are probably more apt to be buying the Lexuses and front-loading washers of the world. But that's just one college educated fan of Aaron Sorkin's opinion. We'll be seeing reruns next to Sportsnight. Hopefully they won't try to add a laughtrack to Studio 60 also.
