ABC Puts “The Nine” to Bed

For a show that built its premise around the repercussions of a 52-hour hostage crisis in a bank, "The Nine" didn’t generate much intrigue. The tagline for the show was the question: “What happened in there?” The answer turned out to be, “Who cares?”

Over the holiday weekend, when most had stuffed themselves full of turkey and stopped paying attention, ABC quietly announced that it was placing the critically-acclaimed but poorly-reviewed drama "on hiatus." Here at the DeathWatch, this translates to “coma.”

Reviews praised the show for clever writing, as well as the ability to make viewers believe in a bond between the characters. But the show never earned anything above a 3.7 in the 18-49yo demographic.

While ABC insists that the show’s hiatus is temporary, we’ve seen this happen before. And while it doesn’t necessarily mean imminent cancellation, it most certainly is not good news. We hold out little hope for the reviving of “The Nine.”

I tried to watch this show. I tried to like it. I set my DVR to record it every week. Then one week I wasn't home on Wednesday night. Later, when I found the time, I watched Lost and Mythbusters (from Discovery), but I never made the time to watch the Nine. Then the next Wednesday, I purposely did not watch the Nine because I still had not watched the previous episode, and my DVR would record it anyway. But by the next Wednesday I still had not watched either of those episodes. That's when I realized, I just didn't care about these characters or their story. I deleted the unwatched episodes and removed it from my scheduled recordings. It's really a shame that a show with so many talented actors was just not entertaining.

Utterly pathetic. This show was great. Remind me to shoot myself for living in a world where a former Lesbian has a guy-fest show getting a full season and The Nine gets pulled.

My wife and I really enjoy The Nine. It is very much like Lost in how it answers one question and then that answer creates three new questions. It is very well written. I think we as a audience have come to expect instant gratification in our tv shows, just like in our lives. It will be a shame too lose another intelligent show, in order to retain the same old fluff that remains highly rated for those of you who have ADD.

Rick wrote:

I liked this show. They have been too slow to reveal the insinuated mysteries though. In the last episode, they finally got around to developing the plot and relationships. I need more. C'mon, the network probably doesn't have anything better in their artillery! Just because in doesn't have "CSI" or "Law and Order" in its name doesn't make it less worth while.
Maybe they SHOULD have named it "CSI:9"!

TVSeriesFinale.com wrote:

Sad to see the cancellation but it seems like it was a longtime in coming. The ratings numbers just weren't there. It's doubtful that it will be back but ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson really likes it so we shall see.

Aimee wrote:

I really enjoyed The Nine. It wasn't my favorite, but after Lost I tuned in and actually got into the plot. I hate not finishing things, so I really hope that The Nine at least ties up the loose ends and leaves viewers with some cunclusion.

Again, we have been taken on a ride by the networks in regards to serialized shows. Networks need to make commitments to its viewers if they want them to invest in these or future shows. I have watched The Nine and while it moves a bit slow it is interesting. Now, I can be frustrated at another show that I may not see the ending of a la Reunion. Maybe its time to go back to episodic tv so we can tune in and out as needed.

What a waste.....I was actually invested in this show, with it;s first-rate cast and clever plot. I hope they really do mean "hiatus" and not "cancelled". But I won't hold my breath....

JD Hudson wrote:

This story had a great idea behind it, but the plot grew tiring. And what would have happened when we found out what really happened? The show would be over, that's what. The characters were simple, and the whiny pregnant nurse wore me out. I missed one week, and didn't even notice. I watched the next week and guess what? I didn't miss a thing. Better luck next time! Sorry Mr. Wolf, I liked your smile but it can't save this show!

I like this show. Well written and good acting makes this an interesting show. It suffers from the same bad luck that Invasion had last year - following Lost. ABC seems to have little patience for shows that do not retain a strong lead-in from Lost. So, instead of moving the show to another slot, ABC kills it. Shame on them!

Jennifer Sullivan wrote:

I really enjoy "The Nine". I really do want to know what happened in the bank. I just wish they would give us a little more information each week. Now I really hope for any information and that it comes back. Last week when we finally found out what Jeremy did in the bank, to make Lizzy break up with him, was heart breaking. They sure made it seem like it was going to be something more dramatic, but it was wonderfully acted and heartbreaking nonetheless. I hope ABC doesn't give up. They have never had any faith in a show they put on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. and they've let a lot of good shows go (Eyes, Karen Sisco, Invasion). Let's hope they do not make that mistake again.

OB, I feel the same way. I actually have three unwatched episodes on my DVR right now. I really wanted to like this show, but somehow I just never ended up watching it. It was a good show, but not a great one.

Javier wrote:

Hmmm, I started watching The Nine from the beginning because it was received a great review by our local tv reporter (AZ Republic). I stuck with it for a few weeks but it just didn't seem to go anywhere. You kept seeing how awfully affected the characters were by whatever the hell took place inside, but the writers never gave any clues as to what might have taken place. The show needed to progress and it never did. It just got frustrating so I let the TiVo record it but just deleted the past 2 episodes for lack of interest. Similar shows like Jericho and Lost all keep giving you little bites to keep watching. The Nine never did.

Jon wrote:

The show tried. I'll give it that, but maybe it tried a bit too hard. I love Lost, 24, and Prison Break. Thoughs shows never loose their sense of fun, even at their most serious. The Nine was just no fun.

Jean wrote:

I really enjoyed the show. Liked the characters, liked the way the stories unfolded. I honestly didn't expect it to last very long (ie, more than 3 years) but thought it would have a couple of seasons due to good writing and acting ... not to mention the stars aren't hard to look at!

Delissca Belleville wrote:

It was good in the beginning, but has no where left to go but down. Sorry... another XXXXX

I am one of the (apparent) few who enjoyed The Nine. For me it was a great combination of all my best-loved genres-- medical drama, crime drama, the beloved goof thrown in for comic relief. I was always left woth a taste for more. (Lost" never had me.) While admittedly not the BEST show out, I would chuck "Daybreak" far sooner. I am hoping ABC will at least end the series with a conclusion rather than a life-long cliffhanger. BTW-- Is there some sort of WINGS "curse" on Tim Daly? His "Fugitive" was a decent show too. He hasn't had a sucessful vehicle in years!?!

I watch and I tried to like it. I tried to give it time for the story (had there been one) to develop. I tried to go with it just one more time but...this show was borrrrrrrrrrrrring.

At the current rate of going through those 52 hours, this show would've taken years to get to the point.

Good riddance!

I watched The Nine religiously every week. Sure it moved a little slow but so what! I think the cast was great and I was really looking forward to seeing the whole thing play out. As for a Wings Curse... Last year Tim Daly had a show on ABC called Eyes... it too was a great show with a slick look, good stories, humor, drama, mystery and ABC yanked it after a few episodes. Fine, be shortsighted and cancel these shows but please don't replace it with "The Bachelor's Cousin in Denmark" No more reality tv please!!!

I'm SO disappointed over the news about "The Nine". I guess I'm one of a precious few who really liked the show. Yes, it was a little slow but I think that was by design. The writers gave enough information each week to make you want to come back for more each week. They are taking the time to really allow each character to develop and for the audience to "get to know" each of the nine people from the botched bank robbery. I am SICK AND TIRED of networks pulling really good shows after just a few episodes - none of the networks give a show the time needed to establish an audience! We've become a society of drive-through, instant gratification, impatient people that we no longer give really good shows a chance. I LIKE shows that go a little slower - I don't want to spend an hour watching non-stop action after a hard day. I want to sit back, relax and watch a well acted, well written show that goes a little slower, that allows me to learn as the characters learn about each other and themselves. I'm telling you, if networks continue to cancel shows after 6 or 7 airings because the ratings aren't through the roof, I'm going to just stick to cable channels and rented movies! Why invest myself and my time into a show that's not going to last 6 weeks and that's going to leave me forever wondering what DID happen! I'm just disgusted and frankly, a little angry about this. ABC will keep Anne Heche and "Men In Trees" or "Daybreak" which is nothing more than "Groundhog Day" with violence but they'll axe a GOOD show like "The Nine"??? Gimme a break!

elinor wrote:

I really liked this show. It is actually better than Lost. I am so sick and tired of shows for idiots. Maybe there was too much toying with the audience like a cat with a mouse, but it had me hooked. I am already bored with Daybreak; Lost has become not worth the effort to watch it. I also miss Kidnapped but not as much as the Nine.

JulieM wrote:

The Nine is a great show. Why does anyone even bother watching any new shows anymore? Just to get ourselves involved, and then get them pulled out from under us. I guess NO ratings are better than SOME b/c whatever they decide to run in it's place, reruns of some other show, who really tunes in for that???? Can't be more than their fated 3.7. Maybe they don't have the amount of viewers they want b/c everyone realizes they shouldn't waste their time these days in any new shows b/c god forbid it doesn't come out of the gate in first place. Ridiculous.

I really liked The Nine. I thought it was interesting and different. Each week I found my self wondering what would happen to each of these 9 people. I hope that ABC will at least bring it back long enough to tie up the loose ends. I absolutely hate when shows are cancelled with out any kind of an ending. I think the powers that be should atleast give the fans who did watch and an ending so that we're not all left wondering. Please ABC, give us some closure before you can The Nine for good (although I would like to see it stay on the air).

I liked this show, it wasn't my favorite or anything but it wasn't bad and I'm annoyed that now I'll never find out what happened, I hate when shows get cancelled like that. sometimes the networks really do need to give these shows a little bit more time.

Marissa wrote:

meh. I tried to like it. I just could not get over the weekly group sessions. Did none of these people have friends or a life before this event? I could see the losers still clinging, but not one of those people would really say "I'm moving on with my life and putting this in the past". It's like going to a high school reunion every week to figure out if the cheerleader and the football captain are still together. It's not lack of imagination or ADD on my part, just lack of fuel.

I waited for this show every week. Watched it online as I don't have DVR and the airtime wasn't good for me. I am wondering if they took into consideration the online viewers? I will really miss it.

I also liked this show and want to see them tie up the loose ends. It did drag a bit, spending too much time on each person's agony without revealing much about what happened in the bank during the heist. I think the characters were well developed and well-cast. Because of the cancellations of Kidnapped and Vanished, I purposely didn't even watch the beginning of the new show Daybreak, as it didn't seem to get many optimistic reviews and I didn't want to get involved and then be left hanging.

I just posted a comment about ABC canceling Six Degrees, and think that what they're doing to both shows is sinful. I thought Invasion was a really good show, and of course they yanked that with no resolution. Now they're doing the same thing to two more shows that need to come to a conclusion. I just can't believe the shows that get high ratings. The Biggest Loser? The Bachelor? Survivor? Oh my God, who cares about any of that crap? Give intelliegent people something to watch that is thought provoking and not mind numbing. I don't even know how long Fear Factor was on, but it really had nothing to do with fear after the first few episodes. It should have been called "Banquet of Grotesqueries" and aired on the food channel! I think that the Nine is a good show. It has a good cast and just because the plot is not rolled out rapid fire it's called boring? I just don't get it. What's more boring that watching girls having a 12 week cat fight over some ass hat who's going to dismiss them with a rose?

a good but not great show. unfortunately on american netwrok tv today. you have no chance to try to be different. another csi, another law order please or some faded movie star like charlie sheen to sell & hype.. unfortunately networks. did not learn from lost success because it was different at the time . american network tv does 10 copies. just wait till a comedy becomes a hit again then there will be 20 comedys.

I liked the pilot. I really liked the cast, too...nice to see Jeffrey Pierce (the neck-tattooed robber) involved in something since it looks like Canada's sci-fi show "Charlie Jade" isn't going to be renewed. But unfortunately it felt like it had no premise that it was leading up to...A premise should be a goal in the storytelling, not hindsight. They were doing it all backwards. The bank robbery was back story, and they tried to make it the main conclusion...but how can something in the past be a conclusion for the characters? Why should we care about the plotless drama going on in the present time, when the most interesting thing about the show happened in the past?

Add me to the list of people who tried to like this show but got bored to tears. They pitched it as a 24-like suspense, which it wasn't. If it was supposed to be a drama about relationships, then they should have plugged it as such. I have no problem with character-driven dramas, but this show couldn't even do that right. The characters were about as deep as the shallow end of a kiddie pool and the dialogue and acting weren't that great either. All of the schtick leading up to Egan losing his job just made me want to roll my eyes. Very lazy writing all around. This was one that really should have been pulled.

First I love what Darb wrote up top "Remind me to shoot myself for living in a world where a former Lesbian has a guy-fest show getting a full season and The Nine gets pulled." Oh how I cannot stand Anne Heche. I loved the characters in The Nine and will truly miss seeing what happens with them. I just enjoy watching shows, I don't analyze them to death. And bring back my Six Degrees and Vanished while you're at it!!

ABC - Read what all these people are saying, "You can't cancel shows like this after 6-7 episodes, that leave viewers hanging!" We won't keep watching your network!!

If they don't get the national numbers you need, make them available as a VOD series online, or via Cable On Demand....

Not that I see this as a multi season show, but I think ABC owes us to wrap this up in a few episodes and make them available in some format...

I really like this show, it's written really well and has a great cast. This is one of ABC's better shows. Maybe it would get better ratings if they out it in a better timeslot. Weds at 10 is pretty bad. It's midweek when most people are exhausted and now Medium is back on so it will be against that...

In my opinion, is too good of a show to lose, so change the time slot!

This was my favorite show this season (I love Tim Daly) , I also watched Six Degrees and Vanished. I just will not invest my time in new network series any longer that have season long plots, I hate the networks now and I hope they learn something from all this, but they won't.

I am tired of getting interested in shows(ie: The Nine) only to have them get cancelled without providing answers. Even bad shows like Daybreak owe it to the viewers to have it resolved before it disappears. I really enjoyed The Nine and I will miss it. I still really miss West Wing and I am hoping Studio 60 will be allowed to stay in a timeslot that will help it. It is getting better each week.

I, too, really wanted to like "The Nine," but there was nothing exciting or intriguing about it. Did anyone actually believe the scene in which the banker's daughter goes to visit her hostage-taker in prison?! That was completely ridiculous. And then there's the love triangle a la "90210" with the doctor, the social worker and the dead female victim's sister, who then gets a job as a cocktail waitress. I can't say "sappy" and "corny" fast enough! I've been waiting years for a well-written TV show, and if this season is indicative of what's to come, then I guess I shouldn't hold my breath.

I enjoyed the Nine, I would sit up late on Wednesdays to watch. I cared about the characters and I loved Tim Daly. I hope it comes back on because I want to know what happened in there and what couples make it through.

I am very disappointed with ABC for this decision, they get you interested in a show then cancel it.

Silas wrote:

I like the Nine and believe it should stay on the air. I agree that The Nine can be slow but that doesn't mean it's bad TV and needs to be cancelled. Frankly, I find Heroes to be slow at times too. The Nine is just a much simpler concept without the "supernatural" angle that other copycats of LOST are beating into the ground.

Networks know this new genre is popular with viewers. But what they don't know is how to profit off of them... and so they keep cancelling them. For this genre to thrive, Networks need to change their expectations that a popular show's plotline should be dragged out over a period of ay least 3-5 seasons. Why can't they just tell us a good story and move on to the next series?

Series like "The Nine" should be short-run, with great scripts that keep us coming back for a maximum two season duration. If ABC and the show's producers could concede that the plotline of "The Nine" should only last for 1.5-2 seasons, the scripts would have a lot less "filler" in them.

Case in point... I love LOST, but if those people aren't off that island by Summer 2008, I'm cutting the cord.

I'm probably a little late commenting here, but I really liked The Nine. It was clever and kept me guessing. It was one of my "must see" shows of the week. Much like "Reunion" on Fox last year, the network gets you to watch to follow the myserty, and then they pull the plug! Just once, I would like to know what really happened (on the show) before they do that!
