The Day is Broken

After only five episodes, ABC has pulled the struggling Taye Diggs drama “DayBreak” from the air.

The problem with the show seems to be summed up in the fact that just about everyone saw Groundhog Day in 1993, and this was the same idea -- one man must live the same day over and over again until he gets it right.

As a drama, the conceit might have worked, but viewers stopped watching after the first episode. The show premiered in November to a 2.6 rating, and fell consistently to its final 1.4 rating in the 18-49yo demographic.

Before being pulled, the show sat at number two on the DeathWatch with odds of cancellation at 4:1.

Actually six episodes have aired so far, not five. I guess its a consolation that the remaining episodes will be released online but a lot of people aren't able to watch them -- bandwidth issues, not available to people in other countries, etc.

The article is close in reason, but I don't think correct.

Everyone saw Groundhog Day and instantly assumes it's the exact same premise. However, as Hopper has discovered through the series so far, he does have some persistent influence over how the day turns out.

Compound that with the searching for clues in order to continue up a chain of conspiracy is vastly different from repeating the same day over and over again in order to discover now not to be a jerk and win over Andie McDowell (sp). :)

I love both Daybreak and the movie that it is constantly compared to... but they are 2 separate beasts.

I really am not surprised, there were several problems that made the audience think, "I could care less." Such as: 1 Supporting characters questioning the premise. 2 Characters being slow to figure out the obvious, or not using critical information. 3 Storylines dropped entirely (bus accident, what bus accident?) 4 the whole "today's objective is" lead in, if that alone had been cut, this show probably would have lasted.

This sucks...I am sooo mad. Is there any way to save it????? It was a good show. No one gave it a chance. This ruins my day.

I think the problem with a show like this coming in mid season, no matter the quality, is that at this point in the season most viewers don't have room in their tv schedules to devote to a new serialized drama where you have to watch each week--nor the energy frankly.

Even if the show was for a limited run while other series are on hiatus, I'd personally rather ABC had aired a self contained drama instead of this mess.

Not to mention it was brought in to air after Dancing With the Stars and then in its place after the end of their season. I'm not sure how or why they expected the lighthearted DWTS audience to eat this downer of a show up, but I'm not shocked the experiment failed.

I'm extremely disappointed with ABC, how do you can a great show like this after only 6 episodes when it only has a 13-episode agreement with your network?. I think they should have just finished off the remaining 6 episodes then decide the fate of the show at a later time. In regards to the comment made by K. about the bus storyline, I don't think it disappeared entirely - they just wanted to move the story forward. Honestly, would you really want to sit there and watch Brent save this woman over and over again when instead you could just acknowledge that Brent saved her earlier, off camera. I was impressed with the way the show introduced all these storylines yet always kept things fresh and moving along at a decent pace. All I can say now is please ABC reconsider your decision and do the world a great favor by cancelling "Big Day" instead - I've watched 2 episodes of the show and I already hate it.

I am so pissed that this show was cancelled and from the beginning I knew it would be. I really liked it & got totally sucked in during the first episode and then of course it gets cut. I'm a huge Tay Diggs fan and every show he has gets cancelled & it is really getting on my nerves. It also bothers me when the network can't be bothered to finish out the season...those of us who watched need to know what the hell is going on. If they took the time to film the episodes then please show them! You could at least show them late at night instead of info-mercials...let the fans see what happened so they don't feel ripped off. And I also agree that it is stupid to start a show mid-season when people already have shows they watch, they might want to watch this one but can't & not everyone has Tivo!

Okay I thought that when I first saw the information about this show I thought okay its either gonna be really good or very bad. But I have to say that I like it and I am sad to see it go. If you really think about it, the movie make sense. A man living the same day over and over, and eachday he does and finds out different things and each time he does he is some what changing the next day, all makes since to me when you really sit down and think about it, yes sense's come and go but thats the point he made his parter see and feel that she needed to take her man to rehab, so he doesnt have to worry about dealing with that any more and he has fixed it, so move to the next thing to fix for that day.

Wednesday used to be a great night of recording the shows. Jericho at 8, Lost/Daybreak at 9, and The Nine at 10. Now ABC once again dropped the ball on a show as someone had said only had a 13 show committment. Meanwhile they are about to debut a show about a bunch of guys wanting to kidnap Mick Jagger? Yeah that show will be a hit.

Johan wrote:

This is infuriating. I thought the show was progressing very well. They replaced it with sitcom re-runs? What's the point of that? No one gave ME a ratings box; I think their system needs improving.

I'm so angry I want to go start a fight with a moving car.

This show was great - WAY, WAY better than Groundhog Day, more comparible to the book Replay by Ken Grimwood (one of my favorites ever...) Really wish more Lost fans would have given this a chance - a GREAT replacement for the hiatus. Can't believe they'd pull it when it was only 13 episodes to begin with, only to show RERUNS of BAD comedies. Still waiting for last night's episode to be uploaded, as was reported it would be "for the next 7 Wednesdays" in the Chicago Tribune TV Watch blog.....

Mick wrote:

Just goes to show you that by cancelling yet another great show - the letters ABC obviously stand for Another Bad Choice.
Hey ABC, get your heads out of your asses!!

Aria wrote:

I really liked this show. Taye Diggs is an actor whom I enjoy seeing perform, and I thought the show had great quality, it was mentally engaging and smart.

And they'd rather show reruns of bad sitcoms than a really good 13 week drama?

Yet another show I had committed to watching gets cancelled in 2006. It's about time the networks showed me some respect and started committing to thier shows as much as i do.

Add this to the recently departed (in no order) Invasion, Vanished, The Nine, Kidnapped, Smith, Surface, Enterprise and some others from 2005 and I'm getting a little bored with this trend.

Sorry networks, some things just need to warm up, have characters grow and illict our investment in the plots.

Plus, do networks even realise that comepting spots is so much less relevant int he tivo age? I can watch 3 SIMULTANEOUS shows by recording two. And that's just assuming I have only 1 tivo. It only costs $5 a month for tivo these days. Okay, that might not necessarily help with ad revenue, but it does mean that shows are getting more viewers than they seem preared to acknowledge.

What do they want? Reality tv, that can be dropped an picked up in an instance without any need to have an ongoing plot or real characters?

Pretty soon I'm going to stop picking up new shows and giving them a chance and start reading books again. Or hell, I've got a room full of dusty instruments that might just still love me.

Don't take us for granted....and stop cancelling my shows. I tell you, we're one 'Lost', 'Heroes' or 'BSG' away from the end of days.

Hyperbole? Of course...but hopefulyl I make my point.

The networks should actually play out the 13 episodes of any good drama, or shows that make people think, and let the public decide whether or not they want to watch it. If they don't.. they can watch garbage game shows like "Show me the Money" or 1 to 100.
They can't all be Deal or No Deal !

It's really too bad that the networks don't give the shows a chance, I mean afterall, if we the public can tape, watch, and change our lives to the schedules of so many new shows airing at one time, and on the same day... why can't they just let them play out past the 4th episode, and let the people decide. If the networks only mark the success by the ratings after 4 peeny episodes a few million viewers is better than all of us giving up the tv, the cable, and the digital, all together. We might as well just invest in a really good DVD player.. and watch reruns of any Johnny Depp movie and Mission Impossible 1, 2 or 3.
I'm not pleased, because now there is nothing left to watch on tv except reruns of Prime Time Live, which are taped, and reruns from whenever ago.
Thanks for listening. I know it won't do much good, but atleast I'm with a group of viewers that have something to say, and are not going to take it anymore.
I just would like some new shows. If they were all like Lost and Grey's Anatomy then it sure would get boring. Not everyone is into being Lost.. or Sick, Dying, or Medical McDramady.

Man this sucks...I enjoyed this show...and yet again another good one bites the dust. I mean I liked the show Kevin Hill...cancelled...Daybreak...cancelled....Enterprise...cancelled...Smith...cancelled...Kidnapped...cancelled...I watched all of these shows every time they came on. Am I nobody...I watched, and i'm sure that I wasn't the only one in America watching. Networks...get it together.

This show made me a Taye Diggs fan. I thought it was well done and written in a way which made each show interesting. It deserved better but many new shows suffer from the current trend in Tv programmimg and filming. Programming changes, cancellations and re-runs result in viewers becoming big game hunters trying to find their shows. There is little opportunity to develop fan loyalty. Excessive camera movement results in nausea and vertigo and intereferes with the enjoyment of many shows. This was a show one could get into and my household are going to miss it. But, we willw atch for Taye Diggs in the future.

This is an absolute shame! DAYBREAK was my "day's break"! I normally don't watch any shows, but when I happened to watch the first episode, I was hooked! ABC... you could have at least provided an online poll for us to vote and keep it on the air.

JR wrote:

I believe there was a promise of the final episodes being played online. I am still waiting ABC has no mention of it on there website the latest online video clips they have are from 12/6. When FOX did this they were very informative of the dates the episodes would play and how long they would be available and when watching television on the date and time the show used to be on the would tell you to go view the episodes on the web before the replacement program started. ABC needs to get their act together. They already upset people by pulling the show early and then aggravate us more by playing repeats of george lopez ?WTF? there certainly doesn't seem to be much intelligence with whomever makes these decisions at abc, the least they can do is provide the when and where for the remaining episodes and let us watch them already.

ABC needs a new team at its helm. What kind of stupid decision is it to cancel a show that only has 13 episodes? Who is a part of the Nielsen family anyway? I had basically stopped watching ABC shows until this one. My son and I had a running appointment to watch it together. It was fun, interesting and we could hardly wait for the next week to find out what new change was going to occur. This show was more than Ground Hog Day. I am sorry to learn that ABC has so many oldies at the top that it cannot figure out a good show when it smacks them right in the face. If there is any intelligence left at the network they will not cancel the show and air the rest of the episodes until completion. Don't start what you won't finish!!!!

Dan Steinmiller wrote:

I think they should pass a law for television which would require all the major networks to combine the DVR/Tivo recordings of new shows with their Nielsen ratings scores in order to see how well these new shows really are doing. I think by doing this it will help cut back on all these rediculous cancellations of great shows(Daybreak, Smith)and help get rid of the crap shows(30 Rock, Big Day)that are still on the air.

I can't believe they cancelled this show! This was one show I actually looked forward to every week. I thought they were taking a break for the holidays, but CANCELLED?!!! I love Groundhog Day, and trust me this is not the same premise at ALL! And why would you cancel the show especially since it's just on for the mid-season replacement? Doesn't it only have about 12 episodes? Not smart ABC...you better be going someplace good with Lost, cause that's losing it's momentum too.

I really liked this show from the beginning. I have to say however the series premiere was probably the best that it got. After that, the show seemed to go two fast, in my opinion. Having as many as 3 or 4 different days go by in one episode was a bit of a stretch. A really good concept for a show, and good star, but not executed quite correctly.

Barry Perk wrote:

Ditto to many of the great comments shared so far. ABC is definitely shooting from the hip in regards to their decision making. I guess they haven't noticed many hit shows started out with low ratings such as CHEERS and SEINFELD. Good thing these shows weren't on ABC...they probably would have been axed like DAYBREAK and THE NINE...the only TWO SHOWS I've been watching on ABC. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the actions of a network that kept FULL HOUSE on the air for 10 years...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! I hope that they will at least make these two shows available on DVD. Maybe this is a marketing ploy. I will definitely buy these two series if they provide an ending to the stories. WAKE UP ABC...I don't dare invest any more time in your shows in fear that they will be pulled!!!!!!!

Chase wrote:

I have to say that I was thoroughly enjoying the show up to the moment of being brought off the air. Lost and Daybreak are the only two shows I even bother to turn on the TV for. I guess now I'm back to just Lost.
I suppose the only request left is... Please Put It On DVD!! Heck most of the world waits for shows like this one to come out on DVD before they watch it anyway. I'm betting it'll be profitable in the home viewing arena, much like Taye Diggs's other home viewed hit Equilibrium.

Poor, poor decision. Daybreak was a facinating fast paced show. Similar, but VERY different from Groundhog Day. I enjoyed the challenge of finding the clues as Hopper stumbled upon them watch episode. This was no comedy like G'hog Day. It was action, suspense and drama all in one stylish package. Spike TV, Fox, USA...you'll have a winner if you pick this show up.

Daybreak was a phenomenal show, and the only new show in the last couple of years that I actually went out of my way to watch every week...well, for the few weeks it was on anyway. It is lame how quickly ABC pulled the plug, and there are no references to the show on the ABC website any longer. Does anyone know if the remaining episodes will be made available online?

Good grief, but one of these days I'll learn never to bother getting into new shows: I should just wait until the series comes out on DVD. Only then can I be sure they'll actually finish a storyline.
