DeathWatch Watch

Remote Roundup: Destined for Cancellation?

Since the Midseason Edition of DeathWatch began we've seen quite a bit of action, but two shows have been consistently at the top of the list for cancellation. Let’s review and discuss those shows, shall we?

We’ll start with “The Class” on CBS. It will be interesting to note that this show reached number one on the Fall 2006 Deathwatch before the game rolled over into the Midseason Edition. Back in September, the ratings for this show plummeted straight through the floor immediately after the premiere, and cancellation looked imminent.

Three weeks ago, the show scored a 2.5, two weeks ago a 3.0, and last week a 3.1. It seems to be on the rebound and gaining an audience. DeathWatchers have kept voting for it, and it’s holding its position at number two, with odds of cancellation at 7:1.

But let’s turn our attention to the show voted most likely for cancellation for the fourth consecutive week, “Help Me Help You” on ABC. This is the Ted Danson sitcom in which he plays a psychiatrist who is in desperate need of therapy himself. The odds of cancellation are currently 2:1. And the Nielsen Ratings aren’t helping at all. The last rating for the show was a 1.7 in the 18-49 demographic, it’s lowest rating to date. Ye-ouch.

I watch the class and has its funny moments. I think I mainly watch to see the whole Lina/Richie situation. They are cute and funny at the same time. I also like the interaction between Ethan and Kat. Mainly the show has a reason to watch from week to week besides just the jokes. The show may not be as funny as Two and a Half Men, but it definitely has its moments. I hope that it at least gets one full season.

I haven't seen Help Me Help You but I am a religious watcher of The Class and to me it is the funniest comedy to come since Friends.

I love the class & have watched each episode. It has definatly improved since the beginning of the season. Sharp writing, interesting plot twists, fine acting this show deserves to live!
Lizzy Caplan is a goddess & the Richie/Lina story line tugs at the heart strings. Even the Duncan/Nicole/Yonk plot is heating up. Will lust win over buddy love? Fascinating.

I think that its interesting that both these shows are in the spots that there in, considering how good they really are. I have admitted this in the past and I'll say it again when The Class debuted, I flat out hated the show and its concept. I saw the pilot 3 times and just couldn't get into the show but I chose to watch the next few episodes to see if they'd change my mind about the show. This turned out to be a smart decision because the program just seemed to get better and better with each new episode that followed. I grew to love the Richie character and his whole storyline and I love the relationship & banter between Ethan and Kat - which is just dynamite. My only complaint is the blonde newsreporter chick - she's only good in small doses. As for Help Me Help You, to me its gone from being just a filler show to actually showing promise. I love watching Ted Danson as this shrink who thinks he's just perfect when in reality he's worse than some of his group therapy patients. I'll admit that the show sometimes is a little zany and over the top but when you look at this group of characters - I think it has to be or else its just another by the books show stretching out tired jokes for cheap laughs(ABC's Big Day, this is your problem). I think that CBS & ABC have handled both shows well, when it comes to letting them play out and slowly build up a fanbase, but I think they should advertise the shows more because I usually only see 1 ad for new episodes once a week.

LA wrote:

Help Me Help You is unwatchable. I watched the first 3-4 episodes, and it got worse with each passing week.

I think The Class is pretty bad, too. And Two and a Half Men is having a bad, bad season.

I have been watching The Class since the beginning, and I have to say that I really enjoy it. It gives me some pretty good laughs every week. I'll admit there was a time in the beginning where I wasn't sure about it, but it is definitely getting better each week. I hope it sticks around...afterall it's ratings are starting to improve each week...so there might just be something there. Check it out if you haven't already.

As far as Help Me, Help You goes, I've never seen it, and never really cared too.

I think the class is one the funniest shows out there, certainly a good replacement for friends. I recorded and bring it to work, we are all addicted here.

Aaron Johnson wrote:

help me help you is preety much
a poorly written sitcom
just like any other comedy
that would be poorly written

so, case in point, give this show the "failed show of the week" prize of having it being cancelled

I watch the class and love it! It's hysterically funny. I'm hoping it makes it 2-3 seasons at least. I haven't found an ensemble comedy this funny since friends. Ok, maybe it's not THAT funny but it's darn close.

I really like The Class, also. I think that it is
funny and very well-written. I look forward to it each week. I hope that it makes it.

Dave wrote:

I agree that The Class is the funniest new show of the season and I mean that in a good way. Interesting and likable characters, clever writing, and a variety of plotlines every week. Worth watching!

Heather wrote:

Haven't watched Help Me very often but when I do I seem to be more interested in the lives of the patients then in Ted Danson. I even prefer to watch it on tape so I can pass by that part. Which really saddens me since I like Danson as an actor but the part really grates on me. As for The Class, I cant say enough. I understand why it had a slow beginning. There were so many characters it took time to find the attachment needed to care enough to keep watching. But once it mellowed out and we were able to delve into each characters seperate lives I came to not only love this show but look forward to watching it. The episode with Richie plowing his car thru the store window was hilarious and perfectly written that within a half hours time we were able to see almost all the characters and not feel overwhelmed. I truly hope that this show is given its time to keep growing.

Nicki wrote:

The Class is hilarious! There are great laughs every week which is alot more than I can say for most sitcoms. Ethan and Kat are my favorite. The whole reason I started to watch it was because of Lizzy Caplan and I'm glad that I did.

Aaron Johnson wrote:

i hope that the class gets more seasons
because that , as a lot of people i have heard, is funny

the class is a comedy that is not poorly written as i seem to expect from a lot of people who like it
the fact that malcolm fans don't like lois
i'll never know

as for help me help you,
they do not have good writers
i just hope they cancel it

I LOVE this show. I actually cried the episode where Richie was in his car, with the bee, and spoke so deeply about how he felt about Lina, and then she showed up. When he walked out, fell to his knees crying, i actually cried. And the new addition Kat's roommate will definitely add a twist, because I honestly think that Ethan and Kat should end up together. Now the marriage of the football player and his wife, that should definitely end. It's the best show since Friends, even though nothing can top that.

Garee wrote:

I don't watch either, but have felt since before "H/M/H/Y" premired that it was dead in the water. I saw that it was to air at 9:30, THIRTY, had absolutely NO-idea what its lead-in was, and knew it'd be up-against "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "The Unit," both of which are hour-long dramas, meaning that if someone (such as myself, who watches the former) watches one (or both via tivo, dvr, or video), then they'd most-likely NOT switch midway to a new-comedy.
This, coupled with the fact that I haven't seen an ad for "H/M/H/Y" in weeks makes me conclude that it'll probably die soon.
Sorry Ted, I love you, but I love "L&O" more.

Chad wrote:

I'm a firm believer in the fact that you really need to give a new show 2-3 episodes before making a judgement on whether it's good or bad. That said, there are certain instances when a show is SO bad that you realize giving the show another hour or so of your time is time well-wasted. The Class is one of those shows. The actors on this show are awful. The writing on this show is awful. The chemistry on this show is awful. If I were grading this show I'd give it an A only if we can all agree that A stands for Awful. This show can't be cancelled too soon. This Class should be expelled.

Aaron Johnson wrote:

the point that i am trying to say to you people is:

I just happened to run across 'The Class' one night when nothing else was on and was shocked to find that it was actually funny! I think they could do a bit more to develop the characters of the gay couple a little more. Right now, they're just kind of around to laugh at their gaydar-free classmate and her super femme husband. Re-tooling ideas aside, I still think that it's going to get the axe. I'll try not to get attached.

Ron wrote:

I had my doubts about The Class when it first premiered, but I stuck with it because it was sandwiched between How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men. Now I've all but given up on 2.5 Men, but still watch The Class religiously. I know a lot of people thought it developed too slowly, but in my humble opinion, they built it up right. The premise of the show was that this guy called up a bunch of old classmates who hadn't seen each other for at least 10 years. Some hadn't seen each other for nearly 20. Add to the fact that they obviously ran in different cliques in high school...

Alright, take all of that into consideration and ask yourself how believable it would have been to have them all meet one time after 10+ years and the cast of 8 suddenly all interact as a group ala Friends?

The writers started focusing on duos and slowly introducing the characters to each other:

Kat and Lina are sisters, and thus interact.
Kat takes a warped interest in Ethan, and they begin to hang out.
Slowly, the 2 duos blended together, and you see Ethan with Kat at Lina's apartment on a regular basis.
Now Ethan's started spending a little time with Kyle, so chances are Kyle will gradually become integrated as well.
Richie had no real connections to anyone, so they had him develop a thing with Lina, which also meant dealing with Kat. And since Kat and Ethan are friends, he's now familiar with Richie even if they don't hang out just yet.
Duncan and Nicole were high school sweethearts and he got hired by her husband to work on their house. So they see each other regularly. Duncan takes pity on Richie and offers him a job as his assistant, so now Nicole's sort of bonded with him. And since Richie's sort of back with Lina now, I'm sure she'll be interacting with Duncan and Nicole a bit more, and Richie will suffer Kat and interact with Ethan a bit. Soon, the 2 groups will come together.
That leaves Holly. Her only real connection to the group at this point is Kyle, and his connection to the others isn't well established yet either. It'll happen eventually, but even if it doesn't, as obnoxious as Holly's character is, they could drop her, and the group wouldn't suffer.

Honestly, it'll probably take the entire season to fully establish the connections, but that's the way it should be, considering how diverse the characters' personalities are.

Having the show start with them all as friends already would have made absolutely no sense because you can't really look at the characters individually and think they'd get along with the rest of the cast in its entirety.

What season 1 is doing is character development. I think this show is only going to get better, and it already has me laughing every Monday. In fact, I get more laughs out of that show than I do from any of the other shows I watch. The other comedies are entertaining/amusing, but they're not laugh out loud funny.

Simplyme wrote:

The CLASS is one of the best shows this year, it did start kinda slow but it has built itself up to be one of my favorite shows. Please do not cancel this show.

David wrote:

The Class (grade A-) is the only sitcom I watch, thanks to a review on NPR. Jason Ritter may be miscast as Ethan (can you buy him as a pediatrician?) and Jesse Ferguson (Richie) has some notable timing stutters (nonetheless he supplies a lion's share of what makes the show great). Other than that, the casting is terrific and the writing is amusing.

for the last time, help me help you is a poorly written comedy
end of story
give that comedy a "canceled show of the week" prize

The last 2 eposides of the Class have been great...funny, touching.....worth keeping...they are working hard on it coming together..........

RS wrote:

The Class is better served being in between "How I met Your Mother" and 2 1/2 Men than its previous slot, which was Thursday with "Happy Hour" (that show stunk except for the main girl in it).

The Class is placed with the right mix of other sitcoms on Monday.

I agree with "Ron'") assessment that this first season is turning into a PROPER charactor development. The only person that annoys me, (althought the bunny incident was funny with her) is Holly. I laugh about her husband and the gay-couple is funny with their reactions to Holly and her husband. If they dropped her, it wouldn't bother me at all, but think they need another connection for the gay-couple and the main group. The football player situation, although funny, cannot continue through multiple seasons, so I think that the football player will be gone soon, ala, Richie's wife.

Basically, give the show a chance, it is entertaining and give a B grade with possibilities of more improvement.

i thought the pilot for The Class was pretty lame; i guess I had different expectations by watching the commercials. I now like it. It's one of those shows that isn't trying too hard to throw the jokes in your face. The different plots between the characters are enjoyable.

Something I don't quite understand on the mid season Death Watch. While it is fully possible for "The Class" to be cancelled before its episode order is up, this site has never acknowledged the fact that the show has been picked up by CBS for additional episodes. It was given an additional six eps and now is only short a back three for a full season. So obviously CBS is interested in giving it more time to grow or why the extra episodes?

Besides, it still does better in the ratings than several of the shows that have received full season orders for other nets, so I don't see how it's in any more danger than any of them.

Bryanth wrote:

"The Class" is overcrowded. How arrogant for the writers to think they could cram 4 story-lines into into 22 minutes.

The actors have nothing to do. Plus to add to the damage, they have guest stars they give more time than the 'regular' cast.

Must say, talented as they may be, Sara Gilbert went onto the show and knocked the 8 "stars" off the screen

Will wrote:

"The Class" is a wonderful little show that I look forward to watching every week. There are story lines to follow, good characters and writing; and the show sits between two other wonderful programs. No wonder people don't watch it. It's not a reality show. God help American TV viewers.
