Breaking News: "Studio 60" Pulled Early

February 14, 2007

deathwatch_s60onthesun_320x240.jpgWe just read at tvweek.com, that NBC has pulled “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” from their Monday night line-up one week earlier than planned.

Now don't get excited. The show has it's full order, the execs have promised to air the episodes soon, and the lineup shuffle has been planned for months, as NBC makes room for it's other DeathWatch-able MidSeason show: "The Black Donnellys."

It's just that this past week, "Studio 60" posted a rating that came in at an all time low for the series --a 2.8 in the 18-49yo demographic.

The crime drama, “The Black Donnellys” was originally scheduled to premiere on March 5th, replacing the timeslot currently occupied by "Studio 60" -- but one thing's for certain -- this doesn't look good for the kids on the Sunset Strip. We'll keep you posted.

I think Studio 60 is one of the BEST shows on TV this season. Amazing actors, creative storylines and intelligent without being condescending.
Matthew Perry is at his best and I adore Timothy Busfield. Amanda Peet, although not a favorite of mine, I love her as Jordan.
Sure, there may be some minor problems, but I think the writers and actors deserve to continue. I think it can only get better!

Kevin Gillman wrote:

well I guess I could say I saw this coming and Monday night was not a good episode, but still this does not look good. I enjoy the show I record it every week and watch it. I hope NBC decides to keep this show at least until the season is over with.

I am about to quit watching t.v. all together. They keep removing good shows. They better not remove Studio 60. It is such a smart show and humor. But yet stupid shows stay on. It doesn't make sense to me that they quit a show because there is only 2 or 3 million people watching. That seems like a lot of people to me.

First and foremost, Sorkin and Schlamme are about as good duo as there have ever been. It is a shame that a great show like Studio 60 gets the axe because its audience is to ineffectual to keep up with the show. What does it mean when in order for a show to succeed it has to play down expectations so the audience will get it? Take the high road Aaron and Thomas and you shall succeed I say! I will miss Studio 60, especially Bradley Whitford whom I feel is an extremely gifted actor, and it's witty and inquisitive story lines. I can only hope and pray Sorkin and Schlamme hook up for another series in the very near future. Bon Voyage Studio 60. Time to break out the West Wing DVD's.

I think I'm going to cry. Isn't Studio 60 the number one TIVO'd show in the country? I know it's high on the shows on itunes... Does that count for nothing? PLEASE BRAVO, pick up Studio 60 for those of us with ACTUAL taste!

From what I've seen of it, I'll be shocked and a little scared if the Black Donally's actually make it.

Come on people, stop being so pretentious! This is a DOG of a show, a Dog with FLEAS; in fact, an EXPENSIVE Dog with Fleas! This isnt a comedy, but a pretty woeful drama to boot, so what the hell is it supposed to be? A lame attempt to rip-off Sorkin's own West Wing combined with the TV aspect of Sports Night, to make a completely unwatchable mess! My son has begged me to continue watching this tripe, and for the sake of my kid, I have, but god, does this suck! And hallejulah, its going off next week! Hey people, dont hold your breath for its return! Waste of talent, abuse of age-old sitcom cliches, and plots that go nowhere fast! And, to top it off, that Sarah Paulson has got to be the least funniest actress Ive ever had the displeasure of seeing! Good Riddens to Bad Rubbish!

I'm sick of cancelled shows that have potential. In the last few years many good shows have gone the way of the dodo, because ratings did not put them in the top 10 shows of the evening. It would be a shame to lose another good show such as Studio 60. It is a well written show with good characters. I think it is worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Ouch! Studio 60 was created by the same Genius as West Wing! This has become one of the two shows I watch weekly, the other being House. I don't care which night they change it to, I'm following it with loyalty!

Yeah. I like this show and all, but good god, it's gotten ugly stupid. At first the sketch comedy was problematically bad, now I'm just groaning at the lack of chemistry between Paulson and Perry. That's the big relationship? It's like trying to make bologna and cheese interesting. And how creepy is the seduction of Jordan? Ugh. It's rushed and rudimentary, and worse yet, it honestly is condescending. I wanted to love it. There are many things I do love about it, but... the past few eps have made me grind my teeth in how inorganic they are. As much as I may want to care about Harriet? I just spend every ep wishing she'd contract some dread disease so Albie could do something interesting. Just ugh.

Will wrote:

It has all the trappings of intelligence, but it's not all that intelligent. First we were asked to believe the show-within-the-show was mind-blowing sketch comedy, but all the skits we saw sucked. Then we were asked to believe it was biting social commentary, but name-dropping hot topics and beating around strawmen isn't the same as discussing stuff. Finally, we were asked to believe that all along it was a romantic comedy, even though not a single person in the two main pairings is believable or even likable.

Good riddance. Maybe next time Sorkin will write a TV show instead of therapeutic wank.

I unfortunately have not been able to tune into this show as much as I had hoped... which really does suck for me. I do love the show and I do wish I could watch weekly and there is no way that I want this to go down. I'm wondering if moving it to a different time slot... or maybe the same time slot on a different day would be beneficial.

This show is a disappointment. Sorkin is a brilliant writer, and I love the cast, but it seems to me that the tone of the show is way too serious. The show takes itself way to seriously for it's own good. This isn't the White House, this is a weekly sketch comedy show that they are running. With "Sports Night", Sorkin understood his subject matter. Here I would like to see a show pretense, or faux skit, that was actually funny. (See 30 Rock for that.)Let's back off the fundamental Christian sub-plot, and lighten up. Matthew Perry is a terrific comedic actor...turn him loose!

The 2/14 show got it's lowest ratings? Uh, Valentine's Day ... hello?! People were likely distracted with other activities during that timeslot. I agree that S60 is one of the smartest and entertaining shows on television. NBC would be galactically stupid to pull this show. Well, I guess it wouldn't be the first time. But when it finally dawns on the 'powers that be' that people are actually able to use their DVRs/VCRs so that they can come back to the show at some other convenient time to watch maybe they will minimize the mistakes in the future. We can only hope. NBC: If you do replace it make sure it's with another Law & Order: TSOC (The Same Old Crap). Nothing says ratings like passing out in front of the television from extreme repetition. But I'm not bitter!!! :) Later Gang!

Its about time this waste of electricity has finally been pulled. It, along with 30 rock, it simply one of the worst, most base series on television today. It is intolerance at its worst, demeaning any group of people who aren't in the 'approved' paradigm of Sorkin. Hollywood definitely needs to become more tolerant, and it needs to develop more quality series, instead of the dredge that was this show.

While I want to love Studio 60, it has too many good and bad episodes. There are episodes like Nevada day which suck, and then ones like The Christmas Episode which rock your socks off. I think if a little more time was put into writing each episode, it could be amazing. But when the kicker lines are "I'm crazy about you!" there clearly is something wrong. If it goes I'll be sad, but if it stays it needs to be more consistent (hopefully the good kind of consistent).

I'm so sad to hear (though not surprised) that this show is about to be pulled. Like Sports Night before it, any show that has a lot of sharp, witty and pointed dialog seems to vanish before it's had a real chance to work its magic on a larger portion of the TV watching population.

Simple. Most of America tunes in for Heroes, then as soon as it's over they watch their TiVo'ed 24 (or vice-versa). Heroes is a horrible lead-in for this show, because the target audience is completely different. I agree with the suggestion above that it should be in ER's time-slot. That spot already has a loyal following of fans who schedule their week around it and would also be attracted to this show's style.

Anyway, because I'm a Heroes/24 fan I watched the first episode of this show then decided it wasn't good enough to add to the already painfully long list of shows I'm following.

Unfortunately for the minority of us... the majority of this nation cannot understand the wit and humor of this quality show. A show that doesn't rely on "potty humor" or slapsick to get people to tune in every week. I think Studio 60 has been rather brillant (although a little less romance would be ok) and more original than any other sitcom that has debuted in a long time. I for one believe it is a travisty that those ignorant to intelligent humor get to decide on what the rest of us have to watch.

I can only hope there will be a station willing to pick up such a gem.... and allow us who want more than "Til Death" humor a place to go and intelligently enjoy TV...... Maybe a petition would help....????

I love this show, and hope it still manages to find an audience that understands it and stays on the air. It's easily the best show on TV, and the only show on TV that I watch habitually every episode. And let me say, I have no idea where people get that the skits of the show within the show aren't funny, I've found most of unbelievably hilarous. The only that weren't were the ones that weren't extremely funny on purpose, like "Jenny doesn't have a baby," which naturally got slaughtered. Besides the show isn't about the skits they write, it's about the people making the show. The people who tuned in looking for an L.A. version of SNL missed the show completely. For the rest of us, who get it, and if NBC gave the show a decent enough backing, the future-evergrowing people who get it, it should stay on the air. Here's hoping NBC still has a little sense left.

Those who complain the sketches are lame haven't watched SNL lately. Is there a less entertaining show on the air than SNL? I know I can't sit through it.

All Studio 60 needs is a second season. If they can't fully hit their stride then, well, maybe you pull the plug. But not yet.

Someone please rescue this show.

I don't know how anyone could think that a smart guy like Matt would see anything in Harry.

Studio 60 is a whole lot better and smarter than Ugly Betty. Hello? Is anyone actually watching TV anymore? All of this season's great shows got the can because they didn't pull in a #1 slot. Isn't third in ratings good enough? What happened to shows lasting at least a full season? And what will go into the cancelled show's place? Likely the second-string ideas attempting to make a first-string slot. What happened to "Windfall" and "Heist" and "Conviction"? "Daybreak" and "3lbs." were a whole lot better than 30 Rock and all of the lame reality shows. The only reality show I can handle is "Grease" and that's only because I went to high school with Chad. I just wanted to add my two cents about this show. The show itself is a good show but there is just too darn much time spent on the breakup of a couple we can't possibly really care about since we weren't privy to their personal relationship in the first place. We weren't there when they were together and a show with flash backs just doesn't do it for me personally. I don't care about Matt and Harriett as a couple or non-couple. Too much time is spent on them. I can't get involved with the trouble Matt is having over the breakup. I don't care. I would be disappointed to see the show go. I really like the characters and the premise of the show, but I'm always left with the feeling that the show is about Matt and Harriett. Get over them already!!

This show is for the sharp, witty, intellectually-minded - please tell me that there are enough of us out there to keep this show on the air. I don't know if The Black Donnellys is going to be any good, but why pull Studio 60 completely-why not move it to another time slot where it might compete better, like 7pm (8pmET). Prison Break on Fox doesn't appeal to everyone and I am sick of Deal or No Deal on NBC. But I guess that show must be getting a large share of viewers which gets the ratings which gets the advertisers, and we all know it's about the bottom line which is the almighty dollar, not quality - and that's too bad. I hate to see Studio 60 lose because there are more average viewers than intelligent ones.

Toss one out the window when it's just picking up good momentum. The show has so many opportunities ahead it would be a shame not to see it come back. Shame on you NBC for not supporting the show you yourselves touted as the best show of the fall line-up. The show has a solid audience of loyal and devoted fans. Not to mention the classy wit and great cast. Don't blow it NBC, do the right thing.

I have read so many reviews about what is wrong with Studio 60 and I tend to agree with the consensus-(sketch comedy not working bored of Sarah Paulson etc.)
But to me the reason I can't get into it is simple. It is just too much like the West Wing without being the West Wing (or nearly as good.) It has the same great writing and dialogue, Bradley Whitford, the same dark moody lighting, it even uses the same type face for the credits. Just enough to make you hunger for the West Wing that we loved so much but then were faced with story-lines about prime-time television treated s though its life and death drama. Its just hard to take seriously. It comes off superficial and trite compared with Sorkin's previous productions. And its just too hard not to compare them.
Maybe if there had been a little more time between West Wing and 60 it would have been easier not to compare them and we would have hungered a little more for return of the Sorkin magic but one season later its like hanging a great painting next to 2nd generation photocopy of itself. All it does is remind you how good the original was.

Let's face it. When it comes to television, three words rule. RATINGS, RATINGS, RATINGS. However, NBC execs may have done a quick hip shot on Studio 60 without really investigating it. If there is any truth to the fact that it was one of the highest TIVO'd shows, then that would suggest to me NBC failed to follow the rules of those three other words..... Hrm....I look at this and then remember the wonderful days of West Wing. During the first season, I do believe a lot of people were saying "this is never going to be picked up, it's too smart". Yet, it did because of the twists and turns of the plot line along the fact of Zoey and Charlie and everything else. We did have to wait til the later part of the first season to get to that.

What I'm trying to say here is that we need to calm down and realize that fluff needs to be shown to get to the good parts. We need to go through the motions of the romance and the drugs before we'll get to the level that we want it to be at. Sorkin's first seasons are the ones that have the rocky starts. The second seasons and the ones after that (even though he left West Wing in the third/fourth season) are the ones that pick up and make us really think. Yeah, it sucks that we have to wait, but patience will bring so many results. I do hope that either NBC saves it or they take it to Bravo who needs the show during all of it's reality tv crap (minus Top Design and Real Housewives *grins*). I think this show would have thrived on HBO or another cable network where we understand the slowness and the rocks of shows and give it a bit of time. That's all that really needs to be done here: give it time.

I've pointed this out before, but I think it's worth repeating: Many fans of Aaron Sorkin's shows and many critics call people stupid if they don't like his shows. I really don't think that's the problem. I watched the pilot and half of the second episode before I tuned out permanently and it wasn't because it was going over my head. My feeling at the time was I've seen this before, it was done much better, and I really didn't feel like listening to the characters telling me how smart they were. The issues they were discussing (art vs. commerce, the cultural influences of the Christian right, etc.) were not handled in a way that was interesting, amusing or original. Mostly, I'm just tired of the rapid-fire dialogue style of Sorkin's that mistakes speed of delivery for real wit. Watching people give long speeches telling us their integrity requires them to do what was funny, then reminding us that they are the best comedy writers in the world, and then saying or doing absolutely nothing funny throughout the show made for an excrutiating viewing experience. When the comedy isn't funny, characters who keep telling you how funny they are just seem arrogant and pretentious. I'm sitting there annoyed that everybody keeps acting like they're geniuses when the best comedy they can come up with is a high-school quality parody of Gilbert & Sullivan. Add to that the artificial manner in which all Sorkin characters speak--I defy anyone to name a person who talks that way--and the whole experience is highly alienating and dreadfully dull. Throwing in a few cultural references that made it clear that the writer had taken some lit classes did nothing to make this show stimulating in any way.

Ultimately, here's the real problem--this was a show written by television writers that was supposed to convince us that television writers are wonderful and that television writing is the most important thing in the world. Blecccccccch!
