This last week saw the premieres of three new DeathWatch shows, and we're curious as to what you think of them. So we've listed them here to get your opinion on them.
"October Road" (ABC) -- The premiere episode scored a 5.8 in the 18-49yo demo. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment for a show that seems to be universally hated by critics. Maureen Ryan, in the Chicago Tribune, pulled out all the stops to trash the show: "This wretched show not only features a lead character who is an unredeemable nitwit but dialogue that manages to be leaden, preposterous and pretentious all at once." Damn. What'd you think?

“Raines" (NBC) – Jeff Goldblum plays an investigator who hallucinates about the victims of violent crimes. Solving their murders, he gets himself into the kind of trouble that only an imaginary friend can bring. While the premise seems sound, there hasn't been a lot of critical love for the show, and viewers responded with pretty lukewarm ratings -- a 2.9 in the 18-49yo demographic. The show is ranked at number 10, with odds of cancellation at 74:1. Leave us a comment below.

Our family watched Raines and though it was fine, we decided it wasn't worth adding to our DVR list. We could see the ending coming a mile away, though I thought they'd tease that one out a few episodes at least. Mainly, we just didn't care for the character.
October Road, however, was worth tracking. We love Laura Prepon, and though we could also foresee the ending, we found ourselves curious about what the characters would do, how long the animosities would last, and where the stories might branch.
We love Andy Richter and the fact that the show has no laugh track (the laugh track on the Winner being one of the worst). We were underwhelmed, but we're willing to give the show a few more episodes to mature.

Raines - plot like a million other tired and well-worn procedurals. Can't they find a better vehicle for an actor of Goldblum's stature? Take one part Monk, a dash of Sixth Sense, a smidgen of Dead Zone, a whole lot of Columbo . . . . . (sigh!)

Let's see, a dorky guy leaves the girl he supposedly loves and his idiot friends and doesn't contact them in 10 years (How is that possible? How did he not come home? How did they not call him? The premise is fatally flawed.) He writes a book that reams his friends and girl (unlikely-- the main character seems dumb as a post and certainly not likely to produce a bestselling book). Returns home and finds that his girl may have had his annoyingly precocious child. (Again-- if that kid is his, why didn't she contact him-- they were in love, right? At least she'd need some financial support.) The girl is now dating a truly creepy guy (hard to even look at him). The dorky main character blows off a workshop that he is supposed to be teaching at his hometown college (you would think that a professor or administrator would have noticed that the dim writer had fled and checked on him/talked him out of a panic attack so that the full auditorium of (presumably) paying students wouldn't just get the shaft). Etc. etc.-- the silly plot unfolds. Who wrote this illogical show? Who cast these dimwit actors? October Road is worthless.

Before I saw October Road and Raines, I was looking forward to Raines but was sadly dissapointed. The ending was obvious and I also agree with an above poster that they should have teased a while longer on his partner.
October road was enjoyable and I look forward to seeing how the characters stories develop. Certainly a better show to have after Grey's on Thursday nights than the last two they have tried.
Andy Barker wasn't even good enought to devote my full half hour to...I had DVR the show and only watched the first 15 mins or so...

It amazes me how many people liked the Kevin Williamson "Glory Days" inspired October Road. Not only is obnoxiously cliched, but it was uncomfortably white. Not only was my intelligence insulted, but I was bored within the first nine minutes. Why are tv audiences willing to support mediocrity is beyond me.

I'm quirky, Jeff Goldblum is quirky, so adding 2 + 2, I'm going to say that since I liked Raines, and generally (with the exception of Heroes and Jericho) most shows I like get cancelled, I have this sinking feeling Raines will go. I liked the pilot episode, love the plotline that Raines appears to be talking to himself, when he is talking to the "ghosts", and I'll watch Jeff Goldblum read the phone book. Keeping my fingers crossed that this show will pick up an audience and that NBC will give it a chance.

I haven't watched OR yet so I'll pass judgment on that show on a later date. As for the Raines - its a keeper. This is a perfect role for someone as strange yet enjoyable as Jeff Goldblum and NBC would be fools not to give it a chance and let it start building up an audience. When it comes down to Andy Barker, P.I. - I think the show started off great but needs to stray away from the cartoony villains(in future eps)and it will be a more solid half hour show. Overall, I think Raines is sure bet while AB isn't far from being one too.

What is it when them and their axe. So many shows were killed off because they didn't have blockbuster ratings right off the bat. If "The New Adventures of Old Christine" was on NBC, they would have killed it after the first few shows.
It's like they completely panic and not only stop production, they won't even show the remaing episodes.
Does anybody know why NBC is axe-heavy? More mature/patient people over at NBC & ABC maybe?

The premise is ridiculous and hard to swallow, the characters(except Laura Prepon)aren't interesting or really likable and the dialogue is just unbearable to listen to at times. ABC needs to rid itself of this show like its the friggin' plague and bring back "Men in Trees" already - at least that show has something going for it while October Road is already dead in the water as a series.

I live in Oregon and we are served by the Portland, OR NBc affiliate. I was forced to download the pilot from iTunes. I loved it, especially without the commercials.
However, my affiliate did not give me prior warning about the Miss America debacle so I missed the second episode! So, whoever is keeping count of viewers I hoped they took that into account. What am I saying it's NBC they are always moving stuff around.
I hope Raines gets past this.

I think that Raines is unwatchable. It had glacially slow pacing, and although I liked the Noir-ish aspect to it, how many times can you go over the same stuff? I only watched the first 45 minutes, which seemed like 4 hrs.
The Black Donnelly's is a solid show, much like an Irish Sopranos. Interesting plot twists, but you need to see all the episodes to get into the plot-lines. If it was repeated as often as the Sopranos, it would be a hit.
Andy Barker is a good offbeat show. It has a great physical comedy element to it, and Tony Hale is awesome. Again, sadly, this one will problably get cancelled, like his other shows. And Arrested Development, it seems like the comedies that don't use the same tired formulas that are not animated never succeed. And King of Queens has had how many seasons? The Wal-marts of comedy always seem to succeed. I guess that is the state of the country today.

October Road works for me. Beautiful Girls is a personal favorite "small movie" and I can see some that formula at work in October Road. The two leads Nick (Brian Greenberg) and Hannah (Laura Prepon) are both engaging and sympathetic, even when in conflict with each other. The most recent episode rocked the stadium of my heart, even if Nick missed the mark with Hannah. The core story works for me so that I'll give time for the side stories and characters to develop. I like this show.

Raines: I like Jeff Goldblum and I'd like to see where his character is taken..unfortunately, I'm not that interested in the rest of the drama (the case he's trying to solve). I only tuned in to the second and third episodes because Jay Hernandez is smoking! And I really like Laurie Metcalf.
October Road: I missed the first part of the premiere episode, and I caught it right when Nick and the co-ed met amidst contrived "sparks". I thought their dialogue was ridiculous, especially her lines and I probably would have switched channels if it wasn't for Brian Greenburg's disarming half-smile and boyish, yet sexy twinkling eyes...I'm glad I stuck around because I was rewarded with Laura Prepon's conflicted, thoughful and intelligent performance. I was really surprised. I thought she had a few brilliant moments back on That 70's Show, but then I saw her in an Oxygen movie recently and her performance seemed flat and unconvincing. But I think she shines in this show. I don't see Donna Pinciotti at all. I totally buy her in this new role and I can't wait to see how her character develops. Overall, I still think some of the "witty" dialogue is preposterous, but the feeling of watching a high school play is greatly dimishing with each new episode. It's not original, but I don't think it tries to be. It's sentimental, but I don't feel as if I'm being told to cry every episode. In fact, I don't feel like they're shoving any character down my throat...well I have to take that back because I can see where they're headed with Big Cat. I hope they don't paint him as too obvious a villian. Complicated, sympathetic villains are best, they make for better conversation. Obviously, I'm hooked. I really, really hope they don't cancel this show. There's much worse out there.
Andy Barker P.I.: I love Andy Richter so I really wanted to love this show, but it's just okay. Good luck to it, but I'm not a diehard.

I'd be fibbing to myself if I were to say that I'd thought every episode of Raines has been consistently interesting and well-written. I think that is the factor that I was paying attention to the most... when suddenly Raines seemed to disappear.
It seems totally unnecessary to mention Jeff Goldblum's talent. While I wouldn't describe the program as perfect I have been looking forward to watching it each week. It is a rarity in a programming world that seems intent on offering banal and completely un-inspired content. I mean, does this sound familiar to you? "Ripped from the headlines !!!" I call it a warning and it suggests the biggest problem in television programming at the moment. Cowardness by networks to pursue anything that might offer any risk in terms of viewer experience. Needless to say this is not the world of Bertoldt Brecht... It continues to astound me that Sesame Street seems to end up with the most creative results of anything on the tube. As an adult, yes, I still am very amused.
Raines is not perfect, but it is enticing. Face it, everything unexpectedly cool and worth watching... has a way of being canceled much faster because it requires an investment from the producers and viewers towards actually sharing and learning to become part of interesting (if we are lucky) new idea. Oops. Time investment, an absolute no-no in television. How quickly they will forget the story of Star Trek and how it dived so early on. Can we even say it dived? It took forever to become recognised at all.
I say give Raines a big, big chance. Reality (especially at NBC) suggests something else.
Apparently that image you saw of Jeff Goldbum tottering in a dangerous to write role, was just a figment in your imagination.
