Huff Breathes Last

August 27, 2006

At this point it's becoming a cliché: Show wins tons-o-Emmys, then show gets cancelled. Are these awards even considered an honor anymore? They're beginning to feel like a bad omen.

But is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

This summer, HBO announced that Mark Wahlberg, executive producer of “Entourage” (and star the show is based on) will executive produce “In Treatment” -- a show about a therapist who can listen calmly to his patients while having a very hard time dealing with his own anger issues.

This is the third new show for the fall about troubled therapists whose lives are falling apart as they heal people. "Men in Trees" is set to star Anne Heche as a relationship coach (what?) and Ted Danson will star in "Help Me Help You."

Wasn’t there an Emmy-winning, superbly written and flawlessly executed show just like this?

Major networks are stumbling over themselves to get a show on television based on Huff's premise, and Showtime had Blythe Danner, who won two back to back Emmys for her role as "Izzy." Has the world gone mad?

This is not to mention the surprisingly full-ranged Hank Azaria, Emmy-nominated and hilarious Oliver Platt, the shockingly sexy and intelligent Paget Brewster, and the very gifted Anton Yelchin.

The show was originally green-lit for two seasons before the first season was even taped. Studio smarties worked hard to get the word out that this was going to be a hit. Unfortunately, they were persuading a bunch of bad luckers. The execs sent out 12,000 DVDs of "Huff" to Emmy voters! Showtime won a record seven Emmy nominations for "Huff," and they've cancelled it, citing low ratings.

It’s like the Big Bang. We don’t really understand it.

This is downright BULLSH*T. This was the best series on showtime and we all know it, why it is being cancelled..... of course, the ratings. PPL why weren't you watching it?? This was the most intruiging show, with the must interesting characters and an allstar cast!!

This reminds me of the time I cried like a little b*tch with HBO cancelled Carnivale... broke my heart. This makes me not want to watch ANY series again.... I can't take the disapointment anymore. This show had too much potential to just CAN like this!!!!!

Eve Mallett wrote:

I so agree with Jenn. How do they expect us to tune into their shows when they are like teasers? They hook us in then they cut us off. I am tired of HBO and Showtime not giving these shows enough time to grow an audience. HBO is doing the same thing to Deadwood!!! So in protest i'm not going to bother watching Showtimes new Brotherhood or HBO's Lucky Louie!

Its nice that Showtime a freaking pay channel is so worried about ratings. Seven Emmy Nom's last year and several this year what the hell. I never watch a series religiously, but my fiancee got me into this one and bought me the first season immediatly when it came out. I am truly saddened by Show Time's decision. I mean what the hell does a show have to do to stay on the air. Maybe the trick is to suck like Sleeper Cell.

Branden Wansel wrote:

I agree with Jenn and Eve. This is getting rediculous. Carnivale, Huff, Dead Like Me (my favorite) ALL CANCELLED! I refuse to watch any more new series on HBO or Showtime. I'll wait instead, and if they make it past 2 seasons, I will rent the DVD's. Viacom needs to pay more attention to what Showtime is doing, or "Not Doing" At the very least, if you are going to have the nerve to cancel a great series, at least set it free and give it to Bravo or IFC for new life. I guess for series to survive on pay channels, they must be full of sex (Queer as Folk, Real Sex, Sex and the City)or full of senseless violence (Sopranos, Oz.)

Julie O'Malley wrote:

What IS it with those guys? Every time they have an intelligent, funny, thought-provoking, engaging series, Showtime pulls the plug after 2 seasons!! (Dead Like Me, and now HUFF). Unless, of course, it has a gay and lesbian theme (as in "L-Word".. does anyone actually watch that? And "Queer as Folk" was allowed a full five seasons!)

Face it; they'll never have a "Sopranos" because they just don't have the same viewership as HBO, and they make really stupid decisions regarding their shows.

No wonder HBO is "simply the best". (Carnivale's demise notwithstanding)

Eric wrote:

I agree with you Branden for the most part. Your comment about The Sopranos and Oz surviving only because they are backed up by senseless violence is assanine to say the very least. Both shows are well written, acted and directed, a show about the mafia and a show set in a prison will surely involve some amount of violence. Dont be foolish and bash shows that survive because they contain elements that you seem to say are below you.

Six Feet Under survived without excessive sex and gratuitous violence. It ended when the time was right.

They did the same thing to "Dead Like Me" the show "Huff" replaced . I cancilled my showtime , and now just download "Huff" from a P2P source.I thought the point of cable TV was so that good shows with smaller fan groups got aired .The list of good shows lost is much longer than this site can list. The list of crud that is still on the air is almost has long .Anyone up for a good episode of "the Real World" LoL Has if there ever was one in the decade its been running ..............................

I'm totally agreeing with everyone who says "let the show find an audience." The first couple of seasons of Seinfeld had horrible ratings, right? I mean, if they gave Arrested Development and Huff just a few more seasons and allowed for the word-of-mouth factor, both shows would be hits. But lay off the negative comments about Queer as Folk. That show actually deserved awards. It was ground-breaking and extrememly well acted (Sharon Glass should have won all sorts of Emmys). I just wish these networks would understand that not every show will be a huge hit like Idol, but people still enjoy them.

I'm not sure what you folks are so upset about ...

Just switch on over to "Arts and Entertainment" channel and be intellectually stimulated by Dog the Bounty Hunter. I find that with a moderate to strong high ball, and if I squint my eyes just right, it reminds me of the glory days of shows like the Hornblower series, Nero Wolfe, and other gutter level entertainment. Ahhh... Mrs. Dog's intuitively strategic wearing of tight pants leaves one panting for more. Hmmm... Wonder if she's related to Morey Chakam ???? ROFL!

I AM IN A STATE OF SHOCK! As an avid, voracious viewer of Huff, I stupidly took for granted that this show would be around forever. SILLY ME! Did Robert Greenblatt and other execs at SHOWTIME all ride the "short" busses to school? I know I sound like a raving fan without much of a life, but that is not the case. In pre production with my own show based on my life and 15 yr. stand up comedy going, I had hoped to possibly forge a deal with this network, BUT, this decision leaves me shaky. Sad. It had been a LONG time since I had actually PLANNED my viewing of anything on TV anymore. Maybe HBO can pull another "S&TC" out of it's ass. We need SOMETHING!

Allison wrote:

You know...what are people thinking when they cancel a show like Huff? This is the greatest show to come along in years with the greatest cast of actors ever. Finally, finally there was a show worth watching...and who are these people who let a gem like this just go? I need to cancel my showtime subscription~they will never be able to even come close to matching this show in quality.

why did they cancel qaf. it was the perfect show or gays....jus like str8 drama was bein glamorously real..so was qaf...why shud showtime fear bein the "gay" channel...shouldn't other channels be worried tht they r the "str8 only" channel!

I am so sad and disappointed. Huff was one of my favorite shows- I truly hope the bigs rethink this HUGE mistake of Cancelling one of the finest and most quality series I have seen, and trust me I am a fan of series dramas. What a major disappointment!! I was so upset last night when I found out from some random at a bar that was complaining how he was devastated! I am shocked and bitter now- RIP Huff!!!

I love Huff. It has to be one of my favorite tv shows. It is smart, true to life, and fresh. We are no longer challenged and respected as television viewers. The networks think that they can throw BS at us like Laguna Beach for example and then dangle the possibility of greatness in front of us, like Huff, just to take it away. I have loved Wonderland, Undeclared, Freaks and Geeks, Firefly, and numerous other shows and Huff was a new addition to that list. And now Showtime has destroyed that too. When will the injustice end?

That's it, I'm cancelling Showtime and HBO. I only kept showtime for Huff even though they cancelled my favorite show ever, Dead like Me and now they cancel Huff too. Don't they understand they're in the middle of a story? We need an ending.

Showtime and HBO are friggin killing me! WTF man?! Every time they get it right they cancel it. In my mind they OWE us some decent programming. They charge us out the ass monthly and then give us predominantly old crap with the ocassional new release. Even the shows they keep, like the Sopranos, we get like eight episodes after waiting 18 months. I don't wanna hear one more promo touting all of your emmy nods and wins after you cancelled the shows that earned them.

Kate wrote:

I'm in a major huff. I can't believe this show is getting canceled. Stupid me, I just found out from watching Blythe Danner make her speech from winning her emmy award. I'm in shock. Huff was the greatest show ever. What is wrong with you execs at showtime? You should be x-ecs for being so stupid. You almost cancelled Weeds, too, but thankfully it's going another round. Huff was even better, I totally identified with that show and loved all the characters immensely. Way to go, showtime, dump a hit, brilliant move....now what? I wish some other cable station would pick it up and run with it. Why would anyone want to bother getting hooked on anything else on showtime?

This really burns me up! A show really worth watching ends up being cancelled all for what? So once again some Studio Hack in a suit can take all of our choices and distil them down to the lowest common denominator of homogenized crap and shove them down our throats. When the digital download revolution extends it's reach to television the way it's starting to for music these corporate defects, who are all for making money in the quickest amount of time possible, will be scrambling to find jobs and then the talent and us fans can sit back and gain some small morsel of satisfaction. They didn't even have the intelligence to give the best series with the best cast on television a chance in hell to breathe and in my opinion one which would have become one of the all time great shows and given Showtime a much needed shot of credibility. You arrogant executives blew it once again … Stupid, Stupid, Stupid … Shame on you Showtime! If you took all their brains and shoved them up the rectum of an ant they would roll around like a bunch of bb's in a box-car!

Barbara wrote:

Like Kim and Kate, I too only found out of Huff's cancellation by none other than Emmy-winning Blythe Danner! What is Showtime thinking???? How could they cancel the best series to hit TV, and keep crap like "L Word"? The L Word cast can't act their way out of a paper bag! And we pay for cable channels? What am I thinking?

Jeanette wrote:

Robert Greenblatt should be fired since he's obviously not in touch with the SHOWTIME subscribers nor does he have the ability know a hit show when he has one. Advice: Robert, you're a liability to SHOWTIME and you should leave before you make another decision.

BAD SHOWTIME BAD...

I've never taken the time to do this before, and having read comments dating back to June, I realize I'm way behind the eight ball regarding "Huff" demise. I just learned after Blyth Danner's win at the Emmy's last night that Huff is cancelled. Allow me to join the ranks of the intelligent bloggers above who share my inexplicable exasperation with "the powers that be", the "powers" who seemingly have little idea of who their devotees are and just how emotionally invested we become. When a series the likes of "Huff" comes into our lives and reflects the insanity with mind numbing accuracy, the insanity that well intentioned individuals much like ourselves face on a daily basis, one has little choice but to anticipate the next episode and block out everything for that thoughtprovoking almost sacred hour! "Huff" reflected us and how we manage to rise above the insanity time and time again through personal crises and self discovery all the while soul searching. How refreshing it is to know there are writers in the world as eloquent as the Huff creator(s), and actors who breath life into these characters as if they too "get it"! They thrive, blossom and excell in their craft as a result of having been given dream worthy material...for a change. Shame on you Showtime! I'm soooo disapointed! I sure hope you've hired someone to take the time to read these blogs; read and learn!!!!

This is unbelievable. I am also sadly disappointed in Showtime and can't believe they would cancel such a great show. I think more advertising would have helped hype up the show and gained more viewers. I talked to a lot of my friends about the show and they hadn’t heard of it either. A few of them caught a couple episodes and they loved it too. Now, we’re all disappointed by the bad decision made by Showtime!

What a shocker that Huff is cancelled! I will think twice about watching another Showtime series in the future since they cancelled another good show "Dead Like Me". They reel you in and leave you hanging 2 seasons later. Very dissappointed!!!!!!

why is it that nearly every show that was nominated and won was CANCELLED??? HUFF was brilliant and thank goodness blyth won , Oliver Platt was a Phenom!!!! where are all of the original series that Showtime professes to Offer. the powers that be come up with brillliant , origianl concepts , like others said HOOK us in and burst our bubble when prematurly cancelled? why gives? Dead like me was fabulous as well , the L word is interesting but i only waych it because all my favs are gone...maybe it would behoove the smart ex's on network T.V to pick up these defunct series??? ratings would sore, why should we pay for a premium channel or buy th eseries on DVD when there is never anyclosure to these series what a waste of money... get rid f your programing director asap... how about sending out surveys for these show or a way to vote to keep them on befor~!!! you cancell and loose loyal PAYING!!$$$$ viewers? we should have a say in what is shown on channels we pay for! we all took th etime to complain about your programing decisions, may be a smart move to listen.

We need to DEMAND that Huff comes back for a third season!!! Lord-y Lord, what are they thinking? Showtime should re-run season one and two, hooking new viewers surfing that wave of Emmy nominations & wins, and THEN launch season three. I never post, but this one really makes me mad. The show is brilliant, and the network needs to stand behind it!

I am going to cancel my Showtime once and for all...it seems in life these days whatever's good gets cancelled or discontinued, i.e., any intelligent, thoughtful, multi-layered series, any cosemtic, hair spray, lipsticks, mascara's, etc., that you discover to be sensational are history by the time you run out of it. It's perverse and probably more than anything is because the decision makers at the top are mired in ignorance.

What?!
I didn't even know the show had been cancelled until Blythe Danner mentioned it in her acceptance speech at the Emmy's. I couldn't believe it. This was seriously one of THE BEST new shows on tv and they just canned it outta nowhere!!
The storylines were great, the characters were loveably flawed, the dynamic between them was unforgettable....gimme a break!
I can't take any more crappy reality shows...we need more well written series...
BRING HUFF BACK
BRING HUFF BACK
BRING HUFF BACK

I just can't believe that they would cancel a wonderful show like Huff. Instead they keep the stupid L-word on so we can watch Shane's hair hang in her face. The acting on that show doesn't hold a candle to Huff. Who is better than Oliver Platt and Blythe Danner. This is a shame. Do you think that anyone else will pick it up? Is that possible.?

Do tne networks even watch these shows?? frankly I think most of the shows on cable are garbage as regular tv. I know!!! maybe they could add some 20 year old blondes or angry rappers, since thats what the networks feel that is where are only interests lie.!

I loved Huff. It was my favorite show and these IDIOTS cancel it? Was it better than the L word? That crap? Damn freaking straight it was.

I'm so disappointed another great show. If it wasn't pulling the ratings in its because they waited a year and a half before starting the second season and then turned around didn't do any PRESS for it.

fucking stupid im disgusted.

By chance, I JUST found out they canceled Huff...I had been waiting for the 3rd season to start !!! First, they pulled the plug on Dead Like Me, which I loved, and now Huff! Time for me to pull the plug on Showtime. First thing I am going to do in the morning!

I usually don't post about a show being cancelled on showtime or HBO but cancelling Huff was the last straw.

Shows I loved in no order were Jerimaha (can't spell), Dead Like Me, Six Foot Under , Huff and I am sure that there are other shows that come to mind given more time to think.

But the fact is that these shows are the critic's 'darlings' and win emmies which once were considered important. A lot of networks wanted critical acclaim to validate their small networks like Fox, HBO, and Showtime.

I love Scif Fi's Battlestar Gallatica (again can't spell). It averages 2 million viewers according to ratings which would not even move the meter on a major network.

But Time Magazine called it the best new show two years ago. And sci fi is not popular to begin with and to call a scifi show the best new whow is really something major.

HBO and Shotime have no advertisers like the other networks and are as close to being 4 networks as Fox which does advertise.

And while I orginaly picked Showtime and HBO for the uncut movies, I grew to live OZ (anther lost show), the Sapranos which end in 2007, Sex and the City (and I am a guy who could relate to the women's problems in the show. It spoke to all people-especially singles.

But the fatc is that none of these shows woudl be nuber one one a major network but are cult favorites should tell HBO and Showtime to quite cancelling good shows.

I don't beleive letter writing and calling are effective. The last time this was done on a big scale was the cancelation of the series Angel (which I loved and was doing better in the ratings than ever and people were told in October that it would have a season 6. Instead around April of the following year, it was canelled.

And the carrot is there is going to be a MOVIE made.

The only syndicated series that actually made a movie waqs Highland and the movie was End Game-though another Highlander movie called the source has finsihed production but is being held up as far as distribution via Lion's Gate who usually picks winners to distribute.

I feel that HBO should either go back to showing only movies and no more orginal shows (I guess Weeds will be next), or give the shows a long run and quit the 13 episode time lenght. Televise the show for an entire season. SShowtime used to do that with the Outerlimits, Starg gate SG!, and some ealier shows.

So quit getting use hooked and caring about orginal characters and show Harry Potter movies or listen to the subscribers who pay the bills.
