Yet Another Awards Show

We’ve all had this happen: we’re sitting at home, flipping channels, and all of the sudden there’s some celeb in a gown, or tux, standing in front of a Lucite podium, envelope in hand. And we think, “Oh! Did I miss the Emmys? Or the Grammys? Or the…?” You get the idea.

The answer is: of course we didn’t. Because the truth is, we can’t watch one week of prime time without running into another annoying, irritating, unnecessary, indulgent, ridiculous, self-important, absurd awards show.

We need another awards show like we need a hole in the head: make them stop.

Awards shows, as far as we can tell, are created by people who believe that if an event has enough celebrity attached to it, there will be enough of an audience to make it worthwhile. While this may be true, we hope it isn’t the case, and we hope that awards shows (along with prime time game shows and celebrity-based reality shows) have reached their saturation point and will soon disappear off the television landscape.

Oh, how we spend time hoping.

And do celebrities of the film, television, and music industries really require more honoring? Does the “best ensemble of a daytime children’s program in an international market” need to be announced on television? Is the public clamoring and demanding to know these things? We don’t think so. If any of us are absolutely dying to know, there’s always the internet.

Some of these shows are nothing more than industry dinners, with the “awards” actually citations or recognitions, and were determined by such things as album sales, well before any trophies were doled out. If someone wants to know Billboard’s Album of the Year, they can actually just look it up.

I wish I'd said that! You drove that nail home - one swing of the hammer. Only exception, we don't need no steenkeen' globes, golden or otherwise. Oscar, Emmy, Grammy then turn out the lights and go back to your multi-million dollar mansions. NUFF SAID.
