ER: A Very Special Make It Stop

So how can we grumble or complain about a show that re-launched the careers of George Clooney and Anthony Edwards … okay, just George Clooney?

Here’s the thing: when “ER” first started, we were completely hooked. Must-See Thursday was more than just a marketing catchphrase: it was a command. A command we obeyed. The medical cases were fascinating, the drama was intense, and the cast was hot. What more could one ask for?

It took awhile -- say six seasons -- for us to slowly wean ourselves off of our “ER” addiction. First, we started missing a couple of episodes here and there, then, maybe half a season and then there actually came a day when we flipped on the TV and didn’t recognize 7 out of the 10 regular cast member. We think that’s when we finally considered ourselves a recovered junkie.

Just to be clear, that was six years ago. Six. “ER” will be entering it’s 14th season next fall. Not to veer too insanely into Lolita territory (and how’s that for a preface), but when it comes to TV shows we like ‘em young, precarious, a little shaky and full of youthful excitement. We don’t want a whiny, moody, teenager who has no respect left for us and who feels like the only way to grab my attention is with some sort of loud angst-ridden catastrophe.

I don't agree. Although I don't watch the show every week, I tend to like the more serious tone this show has. I love Grey's Anatomy also, but when it comes right down to it, it certainly has a more comedic flare. Besides, I happen to think the cast changes keep this show fresh....and that is the way of the world in show business -

I think ER "jumped the shark" about 3 years ago! I like it much better when a show knows when to end - in its relative prime, not just wither away and die. I wish NBC would just let this one go.

You are so right! I like ER in the beginning, but the past few years (after George Clooney left) have been completely over the top! I'm sick of it and they just need to let it go. It's been on too long and it's getting very stale.

I haven't been a fan of the show since they brought Kellie Martin on in the late '90s. The story arc was obviously going into "very special" repetition pattern at that point--"now the student becomes the teacher" and so forth. And boy, was Kellie Martin annoying! They sure fired her in a "made for sweeps" manner, though. I stopped watching on a regular basis while she was on the show, and I was completely uncurious about who was going to replace her and stopped watching the show altogether.

Maybe the show needs a new hook. How about casting it by talent show? Call it "Medical Idol" or something.

Todd,
The very fact that you started buy saying "I love Grey's Anatomy" says a lot about the validity of your comments. "er" (and opposed to "E/R", George Clooneys previous show) became irrelavent several seasons ago.

Erika wrote:

What really turned me off was when they cancelled 'News Radio', one of the funniest sitcoms around and then the actress (her name escapes me) shows up. Then it seemed over the next few years, every actor/actress from a cancelled show or current movie ended up on E.R... so I disagree with the comment that they were 'fresh' faces. These 'faces' have already been around the block a couple of times.

ER was a ground-breaker when it first aired. It was closing show to my beloved Must-See-TV Thursdays on NBC all through high school and then some. What started with Friends and ended with ER was a dream come true. It was and still is a rare occurance to have one night of television completely devoted to one network. However, after Friends ended, I noticed I was beginning to lose interest rapidly. I was still watching ER, but I was beginning to notice how the show was changing and losing my interest. There are times when changing a few cast members is necessary. It keeps things fresh and interesting, assuming it is done in a respectful and taseful way. When a character is replaced for no good reason, it's disheartening to say the least. But when a character has had a good run on the show and makes a graceful exit, it isn't so horrible to see a new character come in take up the reel. This same principle works for an show. After so long, a show needs to know when to quit. I've come to the conclusion that 5 to 10 seasons is generally a good run depending on the show and the plotline. ER is reduntant and no longer interesting. I have more respect for shows that give us a full storyline in a decent number of seasons than I do a longstanding show that has lost it's spark half a decade ago. Likewise, I have little respect for networks that cancel shows that have not had a chance to give us a good run. Such be the case as Veronica Mars and Firefly...and so many others.

ER is a very good show. Although I don't watch it every weekend, I catch it when I can. A spin off of ER, "Third Watch" was an excellent show IMHO which shouldn't have been canceled so early on. So much story was waiting to be told. As for ER, I feel that perhaps there could be (stretching it) another season left. Let's see what the future holds.

Yah! ER did great when it first appeared on NBC, but now their showing rerun's going 'round & 'round on TNT like nutcases. Put some other show on there besides this one, there are other great primetime ones maybe people would like to watch other than this show; include Charmed on your kick this repeated overexhausted show on your list and again give some other show a chance...Thank you

I totally agree. In fact all of tv hav takena downhill slide. There is no creativity at the networks unless they come up with some cool reality show. It bites. The children are running the networks and they just keep feeding us this crap. There may be 1 or 2 shows a year that are pretty good. most of the comedys are juvanile and insulting. Either commenting on sexx, body parts, and body functions. NBC has No IDEA what Must See TV means. It died with Seinfeld!!

I LOVE E.R.!!!!!! I do agree that they change people out to often though. I want someone to like, to root for, to laugh at and even gorw to love. I think the problem is in the writers and they seriously need to give us a bone with the return of a past character whom we've already bonded with. No new more new people. Say Carter or carrol hathaway??.... Give us want we want... We love you E.R. and want to stay loyal to you!!!!!!!Does anyone else agree???? lets see a poll....... All for the return of a past character? lets brainstorm. Who do you think it should be??????

Daoust wrote:

Your comments about the fall from grace that E/R has taken are right on the money. The season one finale was such an amazing episode, and it capped off a truly remarkable season of a groundbreaking show. On the merits of that show alone I watched E/R for the next few seasons, but I could tell by about 2001 that the show was dying a slow death.

I won't go on much longer, but I'll tell you the exact point when I stopped watching. When that helicopter fell on the really cranky bald doctor guy. That was it. That was the most pathetic character exit plot I've ever seen. Brutal. Embarrasing is a better word.

This show needs to stop. It should have stopped when Noah Wylie left. Or Anthony Edwards even.

I am still enjoying er and would be sad to see it go. I am looking forward to this coming season.

I agree. i use to love er, it was my favorite show. i have seen every episode and continue to watch it not because i enjoy it, but because it has been a staple part of my thursdays for what 14 years. er use to be character driven and caring about what happened to the characters is what made us watch. but now characters are unlikeable and seem to float in and out of the story. nothing exciting happens and story lines are left unfinished. i wish they would just put the show out of its misery so i can get some closure and move on.

I dont agree ER is one of the best long lasting shows out there. It shows real stories that happen to real people. George Cloony is a great actor and he was great on the show, you can't compare him to the cast of ER. This show will always have my vote. OH!! and by the way if you dont like it dont watch it...simple as that

dee wrote:

This article is ridiculous...I love ER!!! It has everything that Grey's Anatomy lacks...I mean whats the point of watchin a show about medical emergencies when once person is narrating the whole damn show..isn't that what the show "Scrubs" was for.In my opinion the new series is way better, but the show should still continue to air
