Deathwatch Update: Happy Hour v. Ms. Heche

September 21, 2006

The clock is ticking. It's been, oh, about two days since the Fall 2006 television series began and still no shows have received the axe.

But we here at BBCancelled are monitoring the "DeathWatch" like granny monitors her blood pressure. So far, America, the big money is on Fox’s “Happy Hour” and the destined-for-disaster “Men in Trees” on ABC.

Let’s focus on the trees, shall we?

ABC seems to be pulling out all stops to save this debacle. Anne Heche, in particular, does not want to take the fall. Her press junket seems to be going pretty well, and she turns out to be funny and delightful.

When asked about working with her co-star, a raccoon named Elvis, she is quick to say, “Best actor I ever worked with … he doesn’t do his own stunts, though.”

About Men in Trees -- Actually, I quite liked it. Friday nights have been pretty bad for TV (in my opinion!!) for quite some time. It was funny without being sophomoric, a little dramatic without taking itself too seriously, and presented some interesting characters that I wouldn't mind watching develop. Of course that means that it will get dumped and replaced by some stupid alleged reality show that I won't watch.

am i the only one who actually likes to watch Men in Trees???????

I really like Men in Trees...I thought, oh brother, another Anne Heche project. But, I found it to be entertaining and a nice change of pace for Friday night television. (remember those lame Hope and Faith comedies???) I would rather see an hour of Anne that an hour of Hope...

Carmen wrote:

Men in Trees seems like a poor remake of the classic and clever "Northern Exposure". Even Anne Heche and the sidekick racoon won't help if the writing doesn't improve the quality and rendition of the general plotline ...This show has potential, but it probably won't be given an opportunity to achieve it. Pity...But then again, watching reruns of Northern Exposure would be a good alternative!

Kim wrote:

I can't believe no one likes it. I loved it as did my mom & sister. I'd be bummed if they took off the only thing to watch on Friday Nights. I thought it was very refreshing!

aj wrote:

I also really liked "Men In Trees". I didn't think I would, and am not a fam of AH, but I found it refershing and somewhat reminicent of Northern Exposure, with quirky charactors, good writing and acting. I hope more people will take a look for themselves.

Diana Goodwin wrote:

I have to agree with those who like "Men in Trees" There are very few good comedies on tv right now, and it is nice to find one I finally enjoy, especially on a Friday night when not much is on worth watching.

Brenda wrote:

I also like "Men in Trees". James Tupper who plays the Wildlife guy is very sexy. Sure it brings back memories of Northern Exposure - but since that's not on, this will do very nicely. Sure hope they give this one a chance.

Rik D wrote:

As much as I would have liked for it to flop, the show isn't TJAT bad. I agree that it's a pretty obvious rip-off of Northern Exposure, but it could be worse. I think shows like Standoff have a little less of a chance at survival because I don't see people staying interested in the premise that long.

Oh yeah, Studio 60 was fine. The first episode was all set up which is a bit boring, but the show was good, and I look forward to the rest of the season.

teri armstrong wrote:

I really liked Men in Trees -- thought it was funny and thought ann did a great job. hope it does not get cancelled

Carolyn wrote:

I LOVED Studio 60! I have to hand it to NBC. They have the guts to put a show on the air that basically, at least in the first episode, bashes the TV industry, as well as, their own company and show, albeit in a thinly veiled way. Kudos! The writing ans acting were awesome. I'm hooked.

Tim wrote:

I also enjoyed this new and refreshing program on Friday nights. I really liked the program. I am crazy about Ann Heche and she looks great. I will be watching every week.

Christine wrote:

I have missed Northern Exposure so much I think Men in Trees is just what us quirky, Alaska loving junkies need. It really is cute and Diane was right, Friday has been pathetic for many years and with all of the TIVO's and DVR's in the world even if you aren't home there are ample opportunities to see it! It makes me smile and I hope they give it a chance, there is alot of other crap that needs to be canned before that show does.

Sue wrote:

I liked Men in Trees. I thought it was very cute and funny. Fridays are always a hit or miss, since it is a big date night, but if I'm not going to be going any where it's nice to have a show like this to watch. I thought Ann looked great and did a good job on the show. I would watch it again.

Linda Furman wrote:

I unexpectedly LIKED "Men in Trees." The dialogue wasn't predictable like other sit-coms. I don't usually like Ann Heche, but she was good too. It was a nice oasis on a dreary Friday night TV watching. I usually watched shows I've taped anyway.
I'll tell ya the show that sucks even more than last year--"CSI: Miami." David Carusoe is as terrible an actor as ever and the first episode was downright stupid. Over the top. I watched 10 minutes and got bored.

SikeChick wrote:

I really don't get what's so gutsy about TV skewering TV. This isn't the first time it's been done nor is it the best time it's been done. Studio 60 was hyped to the hilt and it was meant to live up to that hype. I don't think it did. Still, it was a plot episode and those are often on the verge of awful, so maybe it will improve.

Paulette wrote:

I loved "Men In Trees." Please be wrong about this show being axed!!!

Ann Heche is great!

Traci wrote:

There are only two new show premieres I have seen so far that I think have promise in my household. One is Men In Trees. I find it charming and the characters leave me wanting to tune in next week and see what happens next. Thats more than I can say for any other supposedly funny show on TV, especially anything that last 30 minutes and is full of juvenile behavior. The other show was Jericho. I want to tune in next week and see what happens next just as much as with MIT. Isn't that what weekly shows are supposed to do? It works for me.

Sandi wrote:

I love Men in Trees. I never really was an AH fan, but I think this seems the perfect outlet for her. I love the other characters as well. But, like others have said before me, I'm leary about liking it too much, as the studio execs will probably yank it. Speaking of studio execs, that Studio 60 show is HORRID! Even with Matthew Perry!

Mike wrote:

CBS'S CLOSE TO HOME is going to kill Men In Trees in the ratings, and rightfully so. It's a better show with great acting.

Marci wrote:

After having watched the "Men in Trees" pilot episode and the 1st episode back to back on 9/15, I couldn't wait for the next epsiode on 9/22. I really enjoyed it all three episodes. To me it felt like a good mixture of Northern Exposure and Sex in the City. Very new and refreshing! And talk about a hottie...James Tupper (Jack) I could watch him all day long!

Barbara wrote:

I missed the third episode of Men In Trees and just about cried. I loved the first two episodes and really hope this show stays. Anne Heche is great and believable in her role. This show has promise for the Friday night blahs.

Gigi wrote:

I, too, love "Men in Trees" and am hoping that the network takes its time before making a decision about it. MIT does remind me of both "Northern Exposure" and "Sex and the City," and I couldn't be happier! I feel I've been given a gift -- the chance to enjoy what was the best of each combined with entirely different characters in a fresh new storyline. The cast is superb and I believe the show has gotten stronger and more interesting with each episode. Friday night has been a vast TV wasteland for years so I'm just going to start praying that it suceeds, write letter after letter to the advertisers and decision makers, and BEG that they just let it be. I may even watch the commercials, for a change.

mary wrote:

I love this show and hope the network will give it a chance to get some viewers. I think most people just haven't seen it yet. Most of my friends haven't caught it yet. It is on a date night isn't it?Anne Heche is brilliant.

Anne wrote:

Loved this show and so did my husband. I hope it doesn't get cancelled.

Mary wrote:

I like a few of the new shows - Men In Trees, Jericho, Smith,Vanished, Shark, and Justice. There are so many medical and law shows anymore and now it seems that kinapping/missing shows are being copied all over too. I agree witht he posting about MIT - it is more of a mix of Northern Exposure and Sex In the City - as a matter of fact the first night I made the statement that Sara Jessica Parker would have been good in AH's role, and probably would have drawn more viewers. I think that Anne Hecht's career really suffered from the Ellen breakup - she was viewed as the heartbreaker inthe relationship - which I think turned alot of viewers off to watching the show. Friday nite might be date night for young, singles, but what about 40ish marrieds - there is nothing other than the same old tired news shows or investigating writing (?) shows. Some light hearted comedy that isn't crude is refreshing. My husband enjoys watching this show too.I keep reading that Ugly Betty is going to be a breakout show, but the title sucks - it turns me off to have a title that ridicules someone...seems cruel and really superficial to me and is a complete turn off.

Denise wrote:

I love this show. It does remind me a little of Northern Exposure, but I like it even better. I love the characters and I think they can really develope them. It has a lot of potential, and there is nothing on TV on Friday's. I have been Law & Ordered to death and my gosh...please no more CSI's...and reality just bites...give me something refreshing like MIT.

Barbara wrote:

I saw the pilot of Men in Trees entirely by accident. Liked every bit of it, despite its predictability. It is a bit of a one trick pony, though: some more plotlines that didn't lean on romance and fish out of water might save it.

Lori wrote:

Men In Trees is a great show! I think that the people that are saying it's horrible just haven't watched it. If they did watch it & still hated it, they probably had their minds made up before it even came on since it does seem to copy the Northern Exposure theme. I pray that the critics are wrong & that they don't cancel this. I'm sick or T.V. only being about police dramas & law shows. Does Hollywood think that those are the only interesting things in this world? If people just gave Men In Trees a chance without judging prematurly, it really could be a hit. Why is it getting a bad rap for mirroring Northern Exposure when 1/2 of what's on T.V. now is copying the format of shows like Lost or 24? Maybe they should just cancel MIT & put on yet another CSI or Law & Order type show. We all need another one of those! Give me a break!

Lindy wrote:

I tried watching Jericho the other day, and made it maybe 15 minutes into the show. its almost funny how bad the acting is.

Hallie wrote:

I was also pleasantly surprised by 'Men in Trees'. I hope ABC will give the show a chance! I will definitely be a faithful fan. I also think it will find its audience--we've been starved for something other than blood and guts and reality shows. Tell your friends about this show--we need to get the word out. Keep 'Feel Good Friday!'

eyespy wrote:

It so pales in comparison to Northern Exposure that I probably won't watch it again. But it's inoffensive fluff and I hope they don't cancel it in favor of yet another stupid reality show. It does seem to have a fan base.

Coco wrote:

I'm jumping on board the LOVE IT bandwagon. I have never been a fan of Anne Heche, but I really like her in this show. It's quirky, lightweight, and entertaining. I've already taken a liking to the characters.

Susan wrote:

I've thoroughly enjoyed Men In Trees, as has my best friend. I agree with earlier posters -- I've never before been an Anne Heche fan, but she's charming here and the cast is great. It's refreshing to see something different. I also loved Studio 60! Well-written, well-acted (especially Amanda Peet, Matthew Perry and Tim Busfield) and funny. The pilot of Brothers and Sisters was very good, if complicated by the numerous characters (just how many sibs are there? how many in-laws? could you tell?). Our local entertainment writer recommended Kidnapped (she gave it an A); after watching the pilot, my feelings are mixed. The production values and (most of) the acting make it seem like a film, but the whole kidnapping set-up I found so unbelievable (no witnesses on a busy city street? no one with a cell phone? no police of any kind? no one to stop or report a car smeared with blood? and 40 other things I could list!). The average Law & Order episode makes far more sense. Jeremy Sisto (sp?) and Delroy Lindo are intriguing enough to make it worth a 2nd look; if the plot remains this flimsy, I'll ditch it. So far, Men In Trees is the one new show I'd most regret seeing cancelled. Hope you're listening, ABC!

Yossarian wrote:

I like MEN IN TREES. It's fresh and cute and Anne Heche is perfect as the lead character. Too bad it's on a network channel. It won't survive.

Juan Sabor wrote:

I didn't watch it because I was watching football, but my wife really, really liked it.

Jennifer wrote:

I love Men in Trees! Finally I found a television show that I don't feel compelled to change channels during the commercials. Unfortunately, every show that is good and portrays an intelligent woman going through rough times will be cancelled. Boo to ABC if it cancels this show.

Jane wrote:

I think Men in Trees is a funny and delightfully interesting show. I was a big fan of Northern Exposure and this show and Men in Trees reminds me of that show. I really like Anne Heche and I think the cast is perfect. Please, please do not take away something that actually entertains us instead of depressing us. This is a good show!

Andrea wrote:

Men in trees, I think is ok. I stay home at lot of friday nights and usually there aren't any good shows on. It seems that friday and sat nights usually have either crap or just repeats over and over again. It is refreshing to watch some adult show that isn't geared to 14-25 year olds. I am 37 and Men in trees can do well if networks realize that it takes more than 2 weeks for a show to gain momentum. Networks don't give shows a chance anymore and they take off those shows and replace them with Crap.

vdantev wrote:

"Men in Trees" is pre-chewed relationship drama pablum for people too timid to got out and have a life on Friday nights. It is to comedy what what fish are to bicycles. It isn't the repetitive stranger in a strange land "funny" moments. It isn't the typically snarky big city view of what small remote town life must REALLY be like. It's fact we've seen it all before on other shows, better written and less over-hyped shows but develop entertainment astigmatism at the sight of Anne Heche; as if her strategic under-acting and smirking somehow legitimizes this pre-chewed recycled cud.

aj wrote:

That 'Men In Trees' is reminiscent of Northern Exposure, in my estimation, is a GOOD thing! I miss that program and it's quirky characters & good writing. I say, go for it, and hope the show thrives. I'm tired of stupid juvenile comedies and of endless reruns of Law & Order. Some nights, that 's all that seems to be on. Won't L&O ever die?

Cyndi wrote:

I love MIT and was quite taken aback by vdantev's comments. As someone who has already "had a life" on Friday nights and is now married with children, this show is great.... My husband and I finally have a show to watch on Friday night and if by chance we are out, we make sure to Tivo it.

Count me in the "I never liked Anne Heche before" brigade. But I do like her on Men In Trees, and I LOVE the show. Thank you, NBC, for putting on an intelligent and funny show that gives me and my quite fulfilling grown-up life an excellent Friday alternative to the stupid reality shows, the cop/lawyer/medical shows and the game shows that make up 95% of today's broadcast TV.

I hope this show survives the axe. It is a good show to be able to watch with my husband and teen age daughter. I hope they give this show a chance. There are many more out there that can go in my book. I am so tired of all the lawyer/crime show spin offs.

Paul Hooson wrote:

I have nearly as much education as many with a Ph.D, yet for the life of me I cannot figure out the very confused plotline of "Happy Hour". The plotline of a fellow renting from another fellow who constantly mixes drinks, while everyone in their lives including the tenent's female boss who he has slept with travels in and out of the apartment makes no plotline sense whatsoever. The nonexistent plotline seems to be merely a premise to hang jokes on. But what I enjoy about HAPPY HOUR is that it manages more than a few very funny, and sometimes tasteless enough for a good hearty lusty laugh jokes.

I do indeed hope that HAPPY HOUR will be back in November as FOX claims. Like the cancelled LOVE INC. over on UPN, HAPPY HOUR is one of those throwaway comedies that just isn't all that bad, and is actually great fun viewing. While Brad Garrett's show is improving, it still misses many great opportunties for a joke, while HAPPY HOUR more effortlessly seems to exploit every possible opportunity for a good laugh. HAPPY HOUR is an acceptable lightweight humor alternative to the downright nasty and mean spirited dry as Death Valley humor of THE OFFICE, which has wringed menopause, racism and job firing all for laughs before.

Lori C wrote:

I love the show. MIT needs a chance. I'm tired of all the Cop Shows aka Law and Order 5th version, CSI 3 versions. Reality shows, aka Singing Duets, Dancing with stars. Tired of watching shock TV and lets see how much murder we can put on the Television and try to solve in one week. This show is refreshing and as someone studying to become a psychologist it has great insight on the thinkings and behavior of both men and women. Not a big AH fan but everyone in life falls off the wagon in some form or another, Hope people in general don't hold the show against her because of it. Refreshing and something I enjoy sitting down with my husband on a Friday night with a bowl of popcorn. Give it a chance. And to the Guy from Florida, I'm from florida to. Forgiveness is a great thing to do in life makes everyone happier people.

Let me get this straight now. Hope and Faith was actually on for what...3 seasons? And now Men in Trees may be cancelled? Alllllrighty then!

nanu wrote:

I like MEN IN TREES, Jerry died in ER, to do I suppose men in trees, I like him in MEN IN TREES,
also like Ann in MIT. hope they will keep it.

jean wrote:

I would be so disapointed if they cancel Men so soon, it's a refreshing show on a bad TV night and brings some humor back without being canned comedy. Close to Home (the other Fri night option) is boring and predictable and has been since 1/2 way through last season.

Hillary wrote:

I'm guilty-- I like Men in Trees. It is completely harmless and I find it a nice break from my other favorite shows (Lost, Nip/Tuck, The Office) in that I will never have the jaw dropping experience I had when Walt was kidnapped or Liz's kidney stolen. Early time slots on Fridays have been filled with chick drama for years. Remember Providence?? Sometimes it is just nice to watch fluff, and in my opinion (worth nothing) ABC may as well stick it out. What else are they going to replace it with? Friday has not been a great TV night since Miami Vice. Jerry didn't die in ER, at elast that is what they said last night.

Libby wrote:

I'm in the vast minority, but Happy Hour is/was my new favorite show. I'll be sad to see it go. I think it had promise. It is a shame that networks do not give a show time to build an audience anymore. It didn't help that they burried it on Thursday night. I do think it would have helped if it was on another night. With respect to the plot line, it seems to me that it is just as convulted as many shows that have graced my TV in the past few years, such as Two and a Half Men and The Class. My only complaint is that the third episode that aired would have made more sense as the second episode.

Jennell wrote:

I love Men in Trees! Being the mother of two Fridays are often spent at home. Now there is something I can watch and enjoy. I look forward to each new episode and ardently hope it will not get the axe. My husband will even watch with me, which is saying alot. Anyone who has not given MIT a chance, should. The characters are great and I garantee you will laugh, and let's face it we all need a lot more of that.

Deena wrote:

This show is amazing. Those who liken it to Northern Exposure probably compare every show based in Hawaii to Magnum PI. Get a grip. I love this show and anticipate each upcoming installment. I also DVR them and review them for the hilarious facial expressions and little tidbits that I missed. In the vast "reality TV" wasteland that has engulfed prime time, I much prefer "fictional" programming. When I want "reality" I walk away from the TV and live my life.

Dette wrote:

Compared to a lot of "reality" tv and "serious" drama currently on right now, Men in Trees is actually quite refreshing. As the mom of 2 teenage sons and still married after all these years, trust me I have enough reality and drama in my real life. Men in trees is just plain refreshing. Taking it off the air is wrong.

Ellie2 wrote:

My husband and I are in love with Men in Trees. Finally, a funny, cute, lighthearted show. The characters are absolutely adorable and leaving us with wanting more. John Tupper gives the plumber from Desperate Housewives a run for his money (talk about HOT!!!!). I really hope this show stays on the air, its every bit as good at DH. I mean the stupid Bachelor show has stayed on ABC for several seasons and it SUCKS :-) So if ABC takes this show off the air I am going to be mad. Lets all rally around this show and make sure it stays on. It could become a daily show and Id watch it. Anyway, obviously this show Rocks my world LOL.

serina wrote:

Count me in (and everyone I know) as a fan of this lighthearted, refreshing show. I'm curious where the 'debacle' rumours stem from? I've read many positive reviews by viewers & critics alike, and it's ratings are slowly growing... I hope MIT stays.

I love Men In Trees!! I love Anne Heche as Marin Frist. There is wit and sarcasm, there is sex, friendships, relationships, laughter and a lesson learned or moral at the end of each episode that leaves me with a great big smile on my face and a great start to my weekend. Please don't cancel it!
