Project Runway Whiplash

September 28, 2006

Page 1 | Page 2

20060929_pr_260x220.jpgRarely does TV give us a headache. And we mean that in a good way. But last night’s episode of “Project Runway” was supposed to feature a final elimination. Four contestants began “The Elle Challenge,” but only the winner and runners-up would make it to the next level.

That’s how it was on Season 1, Season 2, and … not so fast!

At the end of the show, all four contestants (Uli, Laura, Jeffrey and Michael) were sent on to the finals, and all showed at Fashion Week.

They’ve done four Fashion Week shows in the past, with a decoy so as not to reveal the final three. (Last season was Kara Janx.) This season, all four shows were the real deal. No decoy!

And no elimination!

I think Michael is the best designer, but his dress didn't show it. This is better than him getting auf'd, but I still don't like Jeffrey. . .

Ms. Oona wrote:

Hello All, I think Michael should WIN. He is the BEST designer to me because to me he can do sporty and elegance. He's an all around designer, meaning he can cover all fashion. I will buy his line of clothing if it comes to chicago and of course I have hips an azz ;)

kylene urvina wrote:

I think we all know Michael is the BEST!!! Laura has the same dress everywwk just different color !! same as uli with all the patterns!! and Jeffry just is terrible !!! I cant believe hes still in the running!! If jeff wins Im gonna have to quit watching the show !! So i hope the catch a clue and crown Michael the winner!!!

A.W.Blackstone wrote:

The judges have chosen to continue to push Jeffrey despite the reality that he made his client cry (Angela's mother)-Bad Form! His disdain for everything is unfortunate at best. My choice: Michael--hands down! He will make the best of this opportunity!

misty wagner wrote:

I think that Michael is the best. They all are good but I think that he takes care of the whole outfit and has good tast for the total look from head to toe. I am so glad that angy is gone.

rachael wrote:

i'm writing because i love Jeffrey and his fresh new clothing. Michael and Laura are old news and Uli is second in my book. Fashion is about making advances, taking chances and Jeffrey has my vote. Michael is good, but not great. So Boo to you all, this is my stance to defend the rockstar designer, because his clothes are awesome.

ivan wrote:

ulis my favorite and laura mikes good and jeff sometimes eh.. there all good i like uli tho cuz shes got good stuff with print just like diane von furstenberg

sporty girl :] wrote:

i love jeffrey! i hope he wins. michael is ok i guess. uli's clothes are all the same thing with the cool patterns and laura just makes dresses of her own.

PhillyKat wrote:

In a way all 4 of them are 1 trick ponies. Laura has her Central Park West sophistication, Michael has his hip hop sportswear, Jeffrey has his rock edge, and Uli has her Caribbean walk-a-long the beach chic. They're all damned good at what they do; however, I think Jeff & Mike, especially (heh, I just realized those are my brother's names) are probably the most versatitle. I've seen all 4 shows and I didn't particularly like any of them as much as I had hoped. BUT Jeffrey's was the best and most cohesive in my opinion.

Cheyenne wrote:

I can't really decide on just one person who should win as a versatile designer. I love Michael's clothes, but the stuff that Jeffrey makes are amazing, too. I think if I had to pick one, though, I would pick Jeffrey, because he is innovative and I know that I personally could wear his clothes. I would also wear Uli's designs. I enjoy her use of prints and it is her signature. Prints and colors. It is refreshing, even if the prints do tend to get repetitive. However, Laura definitely designs for herself. I haven't seen one dress that displayed anything but her own taste in clothing. She always seems to use black and white and it is very bland and old. And the plunging neckline gets old, too. So...I guess, go Jeffrey and Uli!

Pauline wrote:

michael is the best designer and has been since the begining, although he didn't get as much attention early in the show (a dress made entirely out of coffee filters anyone?!? Definitely inovative and it actually looked wearable too.) uli is my second favorite, i love that she uses all kinds of funky patterns but she is starting to get a bit repetitive. same goes for laura, her designs are pretty but pretty much the same thing week after week. jeffrey should have left ages ago, he's had some interesting ideas but he doesn't always pull them off and he's definitely a jerk.

sassy wrote:

I saw the Entertainment weekly article & they showed Michael's collection as very cheap & trampy. I was surprised b/c I thought he might have a good chance at winning. But now i believe it will be Jeffrey. I was rooting for him from the start & I hope he wins. His clothing looks cool & wearable & not cheap!

patrell wrote:

It will be between Michael and Jeffery because Uli is nice but the same, gets boring after a while. Laura it gets boring too. I would not wear the same style dresses. I am going for Michael.

Lori Bennett wrote:

As much as I can't stand Jeffrey's personality, he does good work. I just want to slap him when he comments 'who cares if he's kicked off' My personal favorite was Kayne. I'm banking on Michael, my 21 year old son LOVED his Hip-Hop sportswear.

Laraine Derr wrote:

The ability to work with others is very important and seems to be the most difficult thing to do by nearly all of the designers. I haven't seen even one design that I would term "spectacular". The most consistant designer is Michael and most of the time his work is great. Of the rest of the people I will chose Laura. Laura her work is always wearable and I disagree when others say her clothes are just for her. They are trying to say just for "people" of age

Maureen wrote:

I believe Michael has the most integrity in his work and should win. The Red Short outfit was awesome and his black and white dress was simply stated yet elegant. Jeffrey on the other hand has a very nasty personality, no respect for others, totally self-absorbed and his range of styles is limited to one style tht he is good at. As a designer you need to have a wide range.

Hannah Fried wrote:

I think Michael will win, with Laura as runner-up. Uli? Same damn dress, every freaking challenge. I want to smack Jeffery, but I desperately want to slap some sense into Vincent. What an arrogant berk.

Dean wrote:

Anyone claiming that Uli and Laura do the same dress every time need to hit the web and actually look at the lines they produced for Fashion Week. They absolutely were NOT all the same, and made Jeffrey's offerings look ill-fitting and badly-designed. I wouldn't write either of the ladies out quite yet.

Eileen wrote:

bloomingcacti wrote
i think jeffrey is great, his desighn are cutting edge, and in the same league as vesage, ballenciago, and dior couture, i fill he has the most experience in the real fashion world, uli would come in next, i do not like lauras desighns at all, unless i'm trying to look older than i want, michael is very charming but sportswear on the runaway, i prefer to see cutting edge, i loved his last dress,it went feminine and it was great !! I think laura has some problems accusing someone of something she has't any proof of, is she than insecure about her own projects.

Zach wrote:

Yes, Michael is the TECHNICALLY the best designer, simply because he knows how to make clothes. But, in terms of who I want to win: that would HAVE to be Jeffrey. No question. Week after week he showed great clothes (exception: Mom challenge). The same can't be said for the boring, same Laura, and the once great Uli, who has become stale. From the original 15 designers, the final 4 should be, Jeffrey, Michael, Alison, and Katherine.

Nicole wrote:

I think that Michael should win I have liked him since the very first show. And to think that Tim did not want him on, but Cloe saw something in him. She sure does have the eye for fashion. I really hope Jeffery does not win, someone with such an ugly attitude does not deserve to win something like this. He clothes look like crap.

linda wrote:

I feel that all 4 of the finalists are very good in their area of expertise. Michael is the best though in my opinion. Uli and MIchael are not mean sprited like Jeffrey. I like Laura and I attributed her "cattiness" at times to her pregnacy---she is tired and I can definitely empatise with her! Anyway, I would love to see Michael win!

julia wrote:

Jeffrey may be a bit sour in his disposition but brilliance often comes at a price. angela's mother was melodramatic and in his defense i have to say that she was more difficult than the other mothers. jeffrey is by far my favorite designer, let's all forget personalities. in his work he has consistently showed innovation and always surprises. FASHION is not about holding hands or singing songs around the campfire, it is cutting edge, fresh and fiercely jeffrey goes straight for the jugular.

on uli: i love her whimisical clothing. everything she makes flows beautifully.

on laura: impeccable. she could have a boutique or a line for women like herself but she lacks daring.

on michael: i think he has a BIG future. he should focus on his strong points and make separates and active wear. i think the he has the making of a urban hero.

Becky wrote:

Too bad all these contenders can't team up. Their combined skills would cancel out alot of
their weaknesses. I think Laura totally saved
and made Angela's win for example, by suggesting
restraint. Laura is like the old perfume commer-
cial that plays the theme " I can bring home
the bacon fry it up in a pan, and nevah evah
let you forget you're a man " . Nothing wrong with being predicatably tasteful. Look at Michael Kors , heavenly stuff ! As for Uli, maybe repetitive but... there is a huge market for resort wear for those who can normally afford
designer clothes. As for same old... look at Dianne Von Furstenburg's classic wrap dresses. I can't tell you anything else she's done yet... the wrap is a classic and she is STILL around in the fashion world. Michael and Jeffrey cater to specific groups but there IS a call for that type of clothing . Together they'd all cover the bases if you ask me. One negative comment is about Jeffrey ... he could have behaved a bit more professional with Angela's Mom. Even designers who are well established( and could afford to be brats ) ,carry themselves off with more decorum than the average person . They deal with important ppl who are used to being respected and doted on. He lacks ppl skills in a huge way. Other than that
they all have their place ; it just boils down to who handles the pressure and the challenges with the most grace- that I think they will pick... it reflects their good taste whom they pick after all ... think about it . Ahhem , Uli wins there. Laura is a close second but she should
have handled her opinions more tactfully thru-out. While Uli never said anything her Mom could feel ashamed of. Well raised !

shane allison wrote:

Did anyone watch last night? Do you think Jeffrey will be sent home because he mayhave broken some rules? I hope not. I agree that his attitude on the show was disgusting, but I think he's a cutting edge designer with good ideas for clothes. Other than him, I guess I like Michael. Kayne was actually my fav. I really thought he would go all the way.

Brooke wrote:

I have been a faithful watcher since season one. And without a doubt season three is the BEST. I love Jeffrey, he has what it takes. I like Laura but after the last episode I am disappointed in her. She totally set up Jeffrey by assuming that he had help with his collection. That was hitting below the belt. I thought that Michael did very well in the challenges although from what I saw of his collection he didn't impress me. Uli is a good designer and has talent. But I don't think she will make it to the end, I think Laura and Jeffrey will make it to the end, at least I hope.

Mary Jane wrote:

What . . . were the judges on crack. Jeffery's clothes were hideous throughout the competition. Uli should have won.
