‘Studio 60’ Returning Soon

May 01, 2007

20070501_studio60_260x220.jpg

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the fate of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” – and though we work at NBC, we found ourselves just as boggled as everyone else. That is until last week, when NBC broke the news that the Aaron Sorkin drama will be returned to the airwaves on Thursday, May 24th at 10pm.

Here’s the part that zap2it.com pointed out about the return of the show – it returns the day after the May sweeps period comes to an end, which will also be a week after the NBC upfronts.

So, for now, the show remains in limbo, although most of the show’s critics and insiders say that a second season looks exceptionally slim. We’re torn around the Brilliantbutcancelled offices. On the one hand, we really love the writing. One has to admit, for all of Sorkin’s pontificating, the guy knows his way around dialogue.

On the other hand, it is kind of a snoozefest. What’s your take?

I'm hoping the show returns soon because NBC's schedule looks weak right now, especially on Mondays at 10pm. I really wish though that NBC would bring back the Black Donnellys though - throw it Wednesdays.. but thats not gonna happen though.

NBC has had a particularly bad year with its new shows. At least Studio 60 is smart, funny, and enjoyable. Sorkin should put the drug issues to rest and focus on the relationships and sketches. It would be a shame to take the return of Sorkin, the talent of the cast, and throw it away after a half season.

Pat Tonere wrote:

I love 'Studio 60'. Most people do not like to watch shows that they have to think about to understand. That is why so many comedies stay on way beyond there prime.

Erika wrote:

I think that the bottom line is that Sorkin (who is a television writing god, btw), sort of hit his peak on West Wing. His flippant but brilliant machine gun dialog works well when it actually is spoken by characters who SHOULD care about the facts they are regurgitating. On Studio 60, there are no characters who anyone with a brain would expect to know the stuff they are spouting.

I'd love to see him tackle a more traditional series (Lawyers or Cops/Law Enforcement)... just because I think he could breathe some new life into those tired old dramas

Face it, kids, as I blogged on here b4, this show is a DOG-in fact, its a dog with FLEAS! The real sadness is that this was an EXPENSIVE dog with fleas! Put a sock in this bad boy, its OVER!

Aiea wrote:

I love Studio 60. I don't remember the last time I became as attached to a television show as I have been to Studio 60. Honestly, I don't mind if it doesn't return for a second season. I just want the series to have some sort of closure. And I want to own it on DVD. If NBC allows the first season to play out, I'll be content.

Susan wrote:

'Studio 60' started out great (except for the weak sketches), then lost its way with the forced relationship storylines. The cast is terrific, except I just don't buy the Harriet character -- she isn't nearly talented enough to make the part believable. I'm unfamiliar with the actress, so perhaps it's only that the role is a poor fit for her. The dramatic sequences that are dialogue-only work better than the sketches or comedic scenes. Maybe if they re-cast Harriet? I think it would help the show a LOT if they did that.

Also, the time slot is horrible. The audience for 'Heroes' is completely different than for a show like 'Studio 60' -- they shouldn't even be scheduled for the same night, much less back to back. Be brave, NBC! Move the show to Sunday night. People are bored with 'Desperate Housewives', and 'Cold Case' seems repetitive at this point. Or even Saturday. Lots of people do NOT go out on Saturday night and would greatly appreciate being able to see something other than re-runs from earlier in the week.

I'd hate to see NBC give up on this show before giving it another season to develop an audience. I like 'Studio 60' a lot.

Crystal Taylor wrote:

I really liked the show, too. But my husband thought it was boring. We watched it anyway. I hope they bring it back, and give it another season to grow. I don't think people were real crazy about West Wing it's first season... but look what happened there. I love Matt & Danny!!

Karen Hanna wrote:

It featured the best Xmas show I ever saw. The dialogue is fast & furious. It is super!

Many people say that television is just television, and I suppose that may be the case. But, it is also the voice and face of popular culture. It shapes how we think in this country, and it shows people all over the world what our culture is like.
Most of television is very unremarkable. Who remembers: Celebrity Boxing, Cop Rock, You’re in the Picture, Small Wonder, and of course, My Mother the Car.
Then there are the great ones: Murphy Brown, Law and Order, West Wing, M*A*S*H, Friends, Sports Night, Hill Street Blues, ER and many others.
Studio 60 is one of the great ones. It’s funny. It’s quirky. It makes you think. It makes you laugh. It is well written and has a remarkable cast. Many great shows take a while to develop. To find themselves. To develop plots lines and characters, and to introduce themselves to their audience.
I worry that NBC has not given it that opportunity. That it is evaluating it by cost and not quality. How can a major network broadcast The Real Wedding Crashers, Thank God You’re Here, and a lot of other junk television -- and turn its back on some of its best work?
Yes good dramas cost more than reality television. But if television is to become a tedious parade of bad reality shows, empty comedies and poorly written, cheap and badly acted dramas then a great medium is going to undermine its audience, and make itself meaningless.
It will be interesting to see what NBC does with Studio 60. It will say a lot about the future of the network and, by extension, television itself.

It's the Wings curse! Everything a Wings cast member (with the exception of Monk) has been cancelled quickly: first Eyes (which was great) and now Studio 60! (I don't count that horrible Thomas Hayden Church thing with Deborah Messing). If it doesn't have whiny teenagers or death of some sort with too many characters in an overly confusing plot (aka heroes and lost) it seems to be dismissed. SHAME ON NBC--give it at least one more season.
Alas, the "Ex" is already slated, and without Amanda Peet, the show does not work.

SHAME ON NBC!!

I like the show. I do not find it to be a snooze fest. These guys can act very well. I was actually quite surprised.

mike mclaughlin wrote:

Even if it is for four more shows...I'll be watching and enjoying and thinking about what might have been....IF REALITY SHOWS HADN'T SCOURGED NETWORK TV WITH ITS INEXPENSIVE PRODUCTION COSTS. Theatrical projects are done. It's over. If Studio 60, The Black Donnelly's and Friday Night Lights can't make it...we have reached the true "dumbing down" of our fair country. Only HBO and other pay outlets will take the risk and we will PAY for it.

A correction from my above posting,,I meant to say "Put a FORK in this bad boy, its DONE!!" There, now I feel better-I can rest easily tonight!

John Leonard wrote:

daveroswell, what former Wings castmember is involved in Studio 60? Former 'West-wingers' definetly, but Wings?

Moral_Bankruptcy wrote:

John Leonard--He's referring to Steven Weber, who was one of the leads on Wings and played the suit on S60. The idea of a Wings curse is pretty goofy, considering what a hack job that show was. Monk is a very big exception to "the curse", and Thomas Hayden Church is having a pretty good film career right now (excellent quality with "Sideways" and cashing in with "Spiderman 3").

The real curse on S60 is Sorkin himself. He's an overhyped, self-indulgent hack who keeps putting different titles on the same show. He just changes the setting.

bobc wrote:

enjoyed what i saw.NBC doesn't really have a lot to work with. this and Vegas were the only shows i watched on the network.OH raines was excellent hope to see that again as well

leisa wrote:

I agree with the majority of the previous postings. S60 was brilliant. Sorkin is a genius with his dialoge and bringing intelligent yet current themes to network television. I get so tired watching the same themed show over and over. Television has become monotonous and unwatchable. He has created some of the most promising and thought invoking series ever (west wing, s60, sportsnite). Mr. Sorkin is surely no "hack".

SUPERMODEL 75 wrote:

What is going on with NBC !!!! Vegas, 60,SNL ,what else is there? Law & Order is getting the door, because of cheap/sleazy reality tv no one wants to think.. Are the executuves at NBC doing there research /Take a lesson from ABC stand by your complaining audience, listen to us stop chasing the demo / come in to the light

Tomer wrote:

Studio 60 is agreat show!.
The writing is great, the actres are wonderfull, the might be one of the best comedy shows on TV these days. I realy like Matthew Perry.
NBC, make another season!

Kim wrote:

I am very disappointed that they canceled a funny, intelegent drama. While I understand that it may not appeal to everyone - I was gratified to see something different being shown instead of the cookie cutter shows. I could not wait to see what would happen to the crew - the cast, to Danny and Matt and all the others - I watched them online if I missed them and used my DVR to save them so that when the kids were demanding my time - I would always be able to see the show!

Enrico wrote:

I really like studio 60 and in my opinion, cancel this great show is a bad decision. I watch this show every wednesday on warner channel here in Brazil and, last week, when i read about the decision of cancel studio 60, i got very disappointed. For me it`s one of the best series of the year.

SherBear wrote:

My husband and I do not watch much TV, but we always looked forward to Studio 60. When we found out that it was going to be cancelled, we were pretty upset. I find it funny, clever, intelligent and enjoyable. We care about the characters and like how the show actually makes us think. Please please please. If you're going to cancel shows like this, at least make more of them. Most television is such crap nowadays, I'm reading books again!
