Battlestar Galactica: Final Season

What happened to all the good news in television? It seems as if everything we report these days has a twinge of sadness. Today, for example, when we were greeted with a press release informing us cult Sci Fi channel show “Battlestar Galactica” will be making its next season the final one.

Heading into its fourth year, executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick issued a joint statement saying, “This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle, and finally, an end.”

Fine, but can’t they make that middle part stretch out a bit longer? They’ve turned Baltar into some kind futuristic Vladimir Lenin socialist philosopher for frack’s sake, there’s like four new Cylons now, Starbuck may have found earth … we’ve completely gone ape-nerd, haven’t we?

Moore and Eick’s statement continued: “Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward the end, and we’ve decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there -- we’re going out with a bang.”

As much as we hate to see this series go we also admire and appreciate the vision attached to the show creator’s decision on ending things. As anyone who watched the “Lost” finale can attest, a commitment to end things can provide real focus and clarity in the storytelling.

No, 'the middle' should not be streched out just to put more of the show on the air. Keeping it short lends to the integrity of the show, and it's meant to keep it from jumping the shark. Sorry bbc, I'll miss BSG too...a little.
