Freaks and Geeks

May 19, 2006

For most of us, high school sucked. And somehow sitcoms trying to mine the material of terrible teen years inevitably end up sappy, flat and boring. All in one. But "Freaks and Geeks" was different -- "Freaks and Geeks" nailed it. From the super-hottie Daniel Desario, played by James Franco, to the awfully awkward Bill Haverchuck, played by Martin Starr, it was easy to understand them, feel their pain and laugh at their inside jokes.

One perfect moment: The Halloween episode when Lindsay ditches her mom to egg houses with her new freak friends and ends up egging Sam, her brother – who only moments before was beaten up by the school bully. It’s an example of the show's bulls-eye use of dramatic convenience. While this geeky term makes the show sound cheesy, it's actually totally à propos considering the subject matter. High school: A series of bad coincidences that seemed to follow you everywhere!

The soundtrack is reason enough for this show to have stayed on the air. The opening credits blast Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation," Van Halen is played throughout, and it ends with The Dead. The music showed the tension between disco, rock and hippy trends. And isn’t high school personality defined by music? The kind you like and the kind you hate. Nick Andopolis, played by Jason Seigel, starts the series saying: "You know they're going to play disco (at homecoming). I hate disco.” He ends the series as a disco superstar.

Just like so many geeks in high school, these actors grew up and moved on to bigger projects. (I can't say better, since there's no such thing.) John Francis Daley, aka Sam Weir, headed to "Boston Public" and made a name for himself on "Kitchen Confidential.” No big surprise Franco played James Dean in a TV movie – he can act, but holy moly is that typecasting – and the following year was cast as Spidey's sidekick, Harry Osborn in Spiderman I, II and III. He most recently flashed his trademark smirk as Tristan in Tristan and Isolde – and is set to appear in five more flicks in the next year. Linda Cardellini, aka Lindsay Weir, has been busy most notably playing Velma in the Scooby movies, Cassie in Brokeback Mountain and Nurse Samantha Taggart on "E.R." Samm Levine, aka Neil Schweiber, has made the sitcom circuit and is the youngest member of the New York Friars Club. They should have been Most Likely to Succeed.

So what killed the show? Lack of love. Like so many Brilliant But Cancelled shows, "Freaks and Geeks" was mercilessly yanked around the schedule. First it aired on a Saturday – “hope you’re staying in.” That lasted two weeks, then it was yanked off the air completely for three weeks to make room for the World Series. It finally came back on for three weeks… only to be pulled off for two months. When it was resurrected from that hiatus, it moved to Monday night – for two weeks! Come on! Even the devoted had a hard time following that schedule. RIP, F&G. --Chris Parker

I agree. It was a crying shame when this show went off the air. Luckily, they were at least able to make an awesome DVD set out of it with tons of extra features, and the alum seem to be doing well. Except for Martin Starr...I always thought he was the funniest. Where is he?!

Mark wrote:

Don't know about Starr, but I like Cardellini on E.R.

I agree...one of the best shows that season! Sure would be nice to see this show here at Brilliant But Cancelled!

I think it died because it was a bit ahead of its time and from parental (network) neglect. Too common these days.

I liked that show because it had really looking people in it, unlike other shows of the day (can everyone say "90210"?). That's what I like about "The Office", too... the characters don't look like they have been Hollywoodized.

I agree. Too many great shows have gotten moved around so much viewers no longer look to find them and end up walking away unsatisfied again. It's just plain sad. "Freeks and Geeks" is missed just as much as it's wonderful sound track. "My name is Earl" and "The Office" are hopefully hanging around longer. Who needs to be told when to laugh? They are both brilliant! "Coupling" was another but I wish we could have just bought it from the BBC rather than having to Americanize it.

If you don't watch "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS Monday nights, you're missing Jason Seigel needlessly! Great cast, witty dialogue, damn funny, yet surprisingly poignant. By the way, Martin Starr had a guest star appearance on the rerun that aired June 19.

Tricia wrote:

I believe I saw Starr guest starring on an episode of How I Met Your Mother, which also has Jason Seigel. Freaks and Geeks was amazing though, I really miss it.

After Freaks and Geeks was taken off the air, many of the stars were in Undeclared, which was also a a very good show that was quickly cancelled. The ones who weren't in Undeclared would show up occasionaly, like Schwieber showing up on Undeclared as the Pledgemaster for a fraternity.

I really liked Freaks and Geeks, but the scheduling was horrible. The entire cast was wonderful, the writing was close to perfect, and the scenes were so real. I loved when Daniel decided to be punk and they went to the punk club...he was shown to basically be a poser and the smartass guy turned out to be the punk. I also loved when the boys traded the keg for the NA beer. Bill getting drunk was funny, but the best was when the reaction the hippy gave when he found out what the boys were going to do with it.

Lindsay perfectly portrayed the geek trying to be cool with the freaks. I think they just took my senior year and put it on TV, with a much better looking cast. If I could've dated one girl on high school, it would've been her. Heck, I'd date her now.

How can you recap this group of actors without mentioning the brilliant Seth Rogen? His performance in 40-Year-Old Virgin alone should move him to the head of the class.

I discovered Freaks & Geeks through the guy that played the uber-nerd, Harris. I got ahold of the DVDs and laughed myself silly for three days straight. It hit a little too close to home with the geeks, though. :)

It's been 11 days since the last post, I don't know if anyone will read this, but anways... THIS SUCKS! We just finished the whole entire series, and not we're stuck wondering, will cindy ever find her way back to sam and change her boring ways? or will lindsay ever get back together with nick, if he ever comes to his senses that disco sucks. Also, will ken and his girlfriend stay together. Or will bill ever hook up with that girl he made out with in the closet. There's so many questions still left unanswered. and like i said this sucks! Can't they do some damn reunion or something?????????????????????????

I loved this show and it got sooo confusing with them constantly changing the schedule that it was hard to keep up. The movie Napolean Dynamite reminded me of this show. I will need to find it on DVD...it is a crying shame that they yanked this off the air instead some other shows that weren't worth a crap.

I LOVE freaks and geeks! it's so awesome! If you like that, you should watch a show called My So-Called Life. It's not as funny, but it's the same point. It came out in the 1990's for one year and is on The-N.

Haha. Freeks and Geeks has been off the air for a long time. I must have been in middle school when it was on the air, I couldn't keep track of when it was on though.
But I do remember going, "oooh! high school!"

my boyfriend and i watch the entire season on dvd back to back as often as we can. that and undeclared, too. there is no reason this should have gone off the air. it was too beautiful and too too too painfully real and funny.

Freaks and Greeks is painfully watching my high school years all over again but a whole lot funnier. It is the funniest and smartiest shows I have ever watched.

Freaks and Geeks was one of the most amazing shows EVER.
As it turns out, I only watched the end of one episode on TV. I knew nothing about it until a few months ago, when in a Short Term class (the last two weeks of school where you can choose to study whatever you want) on the Book "PREP" and social life and power. We watched Freaks and Geeks and I thought it was not only UNBELIEVABLY funny and smart, but displayed the social universe of people so well. Like how in the very beginning, it's revealed Lindsay's Grandmother died when she was with her, something that would make her sad, and try to fit in. But anyway. I wish the series was still on. I have GOT to get that DVD.

Jay wrote:

The reason this show got cancelled so not because it was head of its time, most of these shows get cancel for one or more reasons. 1. The cast did not mash well on screen or tv as other shows. 2. People don't want to see geeks and freaks on TV, especially the pretty people. I myself an a geek but the show did not do anything for me. It was not funny or interesting. 3. Better story lines, showing the geek wanting more than just be a geek. If people watch TV, all the shows that stay on TV are because all cast members work well or mash well together on the show. The shows that get cancel are not just no good, wrong cast members and not funny.

My husband and 2 boys have watched the whole series on DVD. What a wonderful show! It is fun for us as parents to clue in our teen boys to life in 1980 as well as remembering our own geek past. This show should have been on the air for years. I wish the DVD set had more extras, the commentaries were fun but we want more! Shame on the network that did not support this series.

I liked UNDECLARED,by the same producers.

I miss Freaks and Geeks very much. But thank goodness for series on dvd's. I love to see Linda and Busy on ER and Jason on How I Met Your Mother. Its nice to know they put the good talent's of these actor/actress on shows so we can still see them.

I just heard of this show about a month or two ago, and since buying the DVD just thursday of this past week, I fell in love with the show. Especially since it's displaying exactly what I am going through right now in my final four years of education. It shows what freshman year is really like. Most other shows just make it funny, while this show does both. It shows what really goes on, both the good and the bad. I have never been so in love with a show before. I must admit that I watch too much TV of the few good shows that are still on, and seeing this show for the first time makes me realize how much crap is out there. There are a select few shows that hold true promise, but nothing ever held up as well as freaks and geeks did. Although it's lifespan was unbelievably short, it got the point accross really well. I wish that this show could have continued further, and I hold out hope that this show can be revived in the future. (I realize that almost all the actors would have to be replaced, and I would suggest a whole new setting with new characters so we don't get the feeling of "What the heck is this crap? He doesn't look a thing like Sam! He's got chest hair for god's sake!" That would be our only hope for the most part. A reunion seems far too unlikely, unless it takes place in the present when each character would be older, which I have to admit, would not do so well.) Anyway, it's unlikely that this show will have any TV revival of any sort, and the only future it can see in my eyes is the fans taking the inititive upon themselves to bring it back. Although that would be good overall, showing the power that a fan has, it won't do much in the end. I mean, if they tried to re do the show, with new characters in a new school, it may do well, as long as they try to make it similar to the old one. A new setting with new geeks and new freaks has promise I think, but I think that it's future is in question. But only time will tell. The future holds what we want, so long as we wish for it very hard. By showing how much we want something, it may come true. If you wish to see a future for this show, then show your support for it. Rally up fans and start petitions and give ideas for a future. Don't leave the ideas the the producers. Help them come up with a future for the show. Take my example freely. For anyone wishing to propose a revival, my idea is open to all, so long as I get credited for it. I just want a future for this show. I know that it could work, as long as we work towards that goal. We can do anything, if we believe in it. Well, that's enough of my rant for now I think...

This show could have been an excellent show if it had been made with any morally redeaming qualities, but it was apparently created or written by angry athiests or renegade Jews, as the 1st episode goes way far out of the way to engage in a rediculous and stupid rant against Christianity. It is a shame that bigots like that are allowed to influence public opinion by disseminating assinine lies like this. I thought Tolerance was a favored keyword in our modern society. That must be a dirty word among Hollywood circles. Where is any tolerance? And then the Christian girl character is dressed like a fashion disaster and is made to act like an idiot, which is not how Christians are. That character is only a further attempt by the shows powers-that-be to niggerize Christianity. What a bunch of losers. The people that influenced the show to portray Christians in such an untrue and rediculous manner are the real geeks and freaks.

I loved the show. Lindsey is the kind of girl I wish I could date. The show brought back my high school nightmare and made me feel that I am not only the only to go though hell inb high school. I just finished watched all the episodes and I want more. I am going to miss all the characters and their intresting story lines. The parents on the show seem like my parents becouse they love their kids but don't always know how to express themsolves. I give the show an A+

I never saw this show on TV. It was YouTube that turned me on to it! So I went out & bought the entire DVD set - mostly for The Franco Factor ("Daniel Desario) who was so fine even tho he was a bit on the skinny-side! Had wished him & Lindsey would've gotten together but it never happened.
I graduated in 1976 so alot of this didn't seem to apply to my high school in NJ. We had a large Black & Hispanic influence & me & my friends were neither Freak nor Geek. We were, like "Greasers" - into Doo-Wop since there was a resurgence back then. Plus Pop was, well - popular! I could feel the pain of both the Freaks & Geeks tho. Hard times, the teen years...

THE BEST SHOW by far, in a long time. covered highschool so well, i think everyone could just relate to it. my family used to watch it together when i was little.

FYI - Martin Starr (Bill) was in 40-year old Virgin and Superbad and has had many roles since Freaks and Geeks. The fact that he's hard to recognize in these other roles in a testamet to Bill Haverchuck and how amazing a performance Martin gave.
