BrilliantBC: First you wrote “Dead Like Me” and now you’re working on a pilot for ABC called “Pushing Daisies” which is about a guy who can bring dead people back to life. Is there something about death that interests you?
This is going to sound awful, but some of my fondest memories as a child were going to funerals because that was sort of a very social event and I got to see lots of cousins that I didn’t normally see every day. And they weren’t as sick of my shit as my immediate family, so it was easier to talk to them about TV and movies and things that I was sort of fanatical about. They would sort of put up with it. So I always had good experieneces at funerals. And I, you know, I think with death, you can’t minimize it. It’s so big. It’s something that holds a lot of magic and mystery for me.
BrilliantBC: That's for sure.
There are a lot of questions that surround it. I was talking to a friend of mine who really isn’t comfortable with death issues. And I’ve always been … not comfortable with it, but definitely fascinated by it. Because I’m really curious about what happens next? People talk about near death experiences. And what is it that they see? Is it a bright light? Is it the Care Bear Village? Even then, well, is that just you hallucinating? And all of that is theories and we can never know what it is.
I’m fascinated by life and the fact that we’re conscious and that we have thoughts that string together to form words to have conversation. And life holds a lot of mystery. And I think my obsession with death is really an obsession with life.
BrilliantBC: Which is what happens in “Dead Like Me.” She dies and subsequently gets a life.
And I think that goes through a lot of things that I write. There’s life out there, so take advantage of it and don’t be afraid of it, which is the same thing as saying, yes there is death out there, don’t be afraid of it. It’s part of the machine. And it’s an unfortunate but fascinating part of the machine.
BrilliantBC: So, do you have an afterlife theory?
I don’t have a solid afterlife belief system. There are so many things that I want to believe, that I can’t quite make the leap from my sort of intellectual mind. There are things that I wish happened in an after life and I hope that there is. And I won’t know if there is until I experience it. Or not.
I think that any time you can take advantage of your imagination – that’s the stuff that’s very life affirming.

Ack! Why was "Wonderfalls" canceled? It was so fantastic and smart! Thank you for this piece on Bryan Fuller, who might just be the funniest (and, um, most adorable) TV writer making things up today.

Great interview - I will definately look out for "Pushing Daisies" and keep my fingers crossed that it makes it to air. After watching "Dead Like Me" in reruns on Sci-Fi I'm mistified as to why it was cancelled. It really is an amazing show, so thank you to Mr. Fuller for giving it to us.
