The O.C.

popautopsy_oc_00.jpg You could just hear the pitch meeting: A young, misunderstood hottie from the wrong side of the beach winds up living with his upscale lawyer and has to navigate the seemingly perfect (stress on "seemingly") lives of his new, rich friends. A west coast sort of "Dawson’s Creek." And we’ll call it "The O.C."

Originally its creator, Josh Schwartz, was hoping to bring a little more quirkiness and reality to his story, hiding a desire to throw in a little "Freaks and Geeks" when Fox wanted the next 90210. For a while, at least, the strategy seemed to succeed.

popautopsy_oc_02.jpgThe unflappable O.C. followed the pattern set before it by so many lovely little teenage angst-fests. The focus was put on three wealthy families living in Newport Beach, Orange County, and the dirty secrets that the parents and children kept from one another.

We got to trace the mixed up social life of the puppy-cute Benjamin McKenzie, who played our favorite pauper, Ryan Atwood. The main drama divided itself among the so-called Fab Four. Ryan and the addict Marissa, next to the unlikely paring of mega-geek Seth (Ryan’s adoptive brother) and the uber-popular Summer.

The O.C. was able to stretch the boundaries of what people expected. The parents were given developed and convincing story lines (like Sandy’s move from Public Defender to the private sector), which gave us a little reality in a world governed by world of teenage angst. And as unoriginal as it sounds, any show that gave the comic book collector a real relationship with the prom queen has to garner a little respect.

Interesting I enever watched the OC but you've given it a good sendoff. It seems like you've written a nice love note to a show on its way out. Here's to good tv.

I was going to attempt to say something witty about the show and about the show, but keep failing miserably. I'm going to stick with "MAIRGHREAD SCOTT ROCKS!" and leave it at that.

Good article! Cuts to the quick and does so lovingly. Good stuff.

This is a strong analysis with fresh perspectives. I hope that networks like FOX wake up to the reality of strong, non-formula shows such as this and discontinue their practice of neglect.
This is a wonderfully written article and you should be proud. Congratulations.

I think I may have seen half an episode of the O.C. once. That's nothing to go on. However, your blog makes me feel as if I've seen more. The comparisons you made to other shows helped me put it on some sort of scale. Nice job, I liked it.

Hilarious! When your out of ideas, think of something catostrophic to get you the heck out from under a crumbling show. I respectfully drop my towel.

Aaron wrote:

As do I.

*Respectfully drops towel.*

I loved the OC, watched every single episode, missed the Marissa character and was appropriately shocked when they killed her off, and boy will I miss Adam Brody and Benjamin Mackenzie. I hope they get something else soon, (besides movies). I loved the last episode thought they wrapped it all up nicely. Rest in peace OC guys!

I love it the first season, bought the DVDs full price. I fell out of love the second season, but watched it out of habit. I did buy the DVDs, but only after I found them at a deep discount. The third season was better, but still was lacking something. I downloaded the episodes and burned them to DVD. I have only seen episode 1 of season four so far.

It's been fun, but now it's time to go. Adios O.C., you'll be remembered fondly, especially while drinking too much in TJ.
