"The O.C" -- Can It Be Saved?

Who knew that killing off Mischa Barton's character Marissa would kill a one-time powerful FOX drama? I'm reeling from the shock of the swift cancellation of “The O.C.” after its decline the past few seasons.

How could “The O.C.” be over so soon? Adam Brody's Seth Cohen was the TV icon for the Emo rock set. Rachel Bilson had just begun her movie career in Last Kiss. Benjamin McKenzie showed brooding promise in last year's indie "Junebug." Couldn't they figure out how to reinvigorate the show before giving up? Couldn't CW pick it up as rumored?

What went wrong? Why did I stop screening this show?

When the show premiered in 2003, it filled the void after the cancellation of “Dawson’s Creek.” “The O.C.” was a better written “90210,” updated with a cooler indie-band soundtrack, and more ADD Generation irony. Hell, there was something for everybody since unlike the often ignored adults on “Dawson” or “90210,” we got invested in Seth and Marissa's parents played convincingly by Kelly Rowan, Peter Gallagher, and most memorably Mindy Clarke.

There were very unique elements to the show that will live on after the cancellation. Linda Lavin played the outspoken Jewish mother of Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher) so well that she miraculously rebounded from terminal cancer, and made more appearances. There was Seth's annual Chrismakah celebration modeled after having parents who celebrate Christmas and Hanukah.

Seeing as you have a ton of episodes awaiting you on your TIVO, you've clearly missed the stand-up job that the wonderfully quirky Autumn Reeser (Taylor Townsend) is doing. She's easily filling the Ryan/Marisa connection void by creating a new level of the "opposites attract" connection (originally the main idea behind Seth and Summer's relationship). I wholeheartedly agree that killing Marisa off the show as opposed to "sending her away" in the script was a tactical error. Mainly because loyal fans of a show always like to hope that someday, before the show is history, the two leads will be together. There are countless examples in TV history. However, once the show moved past the greiving episodes earlier this season, it catapulted back to greatness -- particularly scriptwise. It's as witty as ever! Not to mention, it still manages 4 million viewers a week in THEE toughest timeslot on television. FOX could do it a major service by moving it to 8PM against UGLY BETTY, a show initially loved by critics but one that, as more episodes air, seems to pull more from "The Devil Wears Prada" and harps on the one trick pony concept that Betty is, well, ugly and disliked by her more fashionable co-workers. If FOX wants to pull the plug, then the CW should jump on the chance to pick it up, place it in the soon-to-be vacant 8PM Sunday time (I'm of course referring to 7TH HEAVEN's belated demise), and garner the 4 million average viewers it has yet to with any other show on the network. If FOX decides to keep it, just move it back to a Tuesday or Wednesday. The possibilities are still endless.

I certainly hope someone at fox get fired over this, it is an outrage, I did not like the Taylor/Ryan thing at first but it seems to be working just fine....the show continues to make me shout at my tv either in frustration or laughter... either way, the viewers are involved... alot better than most of the shows out there, and they did not even try another time slot first... how dare they.... very disappointed in Fox execs this year...

I'm surprised "The OC" has lasted this long. I don't even think it deserves comparison to "Beverly Hills, 90210". I only watched the first season of "The OC", because there wasn't much to it. The storylines seemed kind of random and pointless, and it seemed like Ryan had to get into a fight in about every episode just to create some drama. "90210" had a good cast, good chemistry and topical and cohesive storylines that were engaging. I'm not sure if "The OC" ever had any of that.

I have loved this show from day one.

I was one of many fans who was extremely upset when Marissa was killed off. I cried. A lot. And I'm a guy. I took it personally and felt a huge sense of loss, like I personally knew Marissa. After a couple days, I *SWORE* I would not watch the OC anymore. Everytime I heard something about Mischa Barton in the news, or anything to do with the OC, my heart would always sink a little bit and those feelings of loss would temporarily surface.

When the season started up again in November, I set my TiVo to record it, just in case. It recorded the first episode. I wanted to watch, but I resisted for a few days. Finally, the day before the next episode would air, I went ahead and watched it.

I was expecting it to be extremely depressing, having to go through a funeral, everyone mourning, etc.

Wow, was I surprised. Not only did I not see what I was expecting, but the manner in which the writers dealt with Marissa's death was extremely tasteful. They did a great job in showing each character mourning in their own way, but it didn't become the focus of the first few episodes. And in time, everyone moved on. No one has forgotten about Marissa, and people have moved on. Summer and Seth are getting married. Ryan and Taylor are dating. (Who'd have ever guessed that?) And their relationship is really growing on me, I want to see Ryan and Taylor happy. I just think the writers did an unbelievable job this season, they made me fall back in love with the show that I swore off.

I wish I could tell you why people aren't watching. I always try to remind my friends that yes, the OC is still on, and it's gotten really good now. I hope the FOX bigwigs don't cancel the show because they must realize that every show they make, will not be the top rated show. Just because it is not getting phenomenal ratings, millions of people are still watching. Screw the Nielsen people, they may paint a picture of America's viewing habits, but it is not an exact science. The OC goes head to head with Grey's Anatomy (which I don't watch and don't understand why people watch it), but the fact is many people love it and no matter how great you make the OC, Grey's is too popular. The writers must take that into consideration. THey have to realize the OC is not going to be Thursday's #1 show, but that's no reason to axe it.

The OC has become part of our popular culture. Chrismakkah. Referring to Orange County as the "OC." Just about everyone has heard of the show and has probably watched it at some point.

My point is despite me being upset at Marissa's death, I didn't give up on the show. So please, do not give up on us either.

Maggie wrote:

You have a lot of errors in your summary: Seth didn't leave town after a break-up, he left town after Ryan went back to Chino. They didn't kill off Mariss's grandfather, they killed off her step-father Caleb (we've never met Jimmy or Julie's family). And we had met Marissa's sister before, she was sent off to boarding school in season 1 after Jimmy was caught stealing money from his clients. This season is better even then season 1, and it's BECAUSE Marissa is dead.

Lisa wrote:

I agree with Maggie. The show is so much better now Marissa is gone. I didnt believe one second of any of Micha Barton's completely wooden performance. She dragged the show down with her constant woe is me routine and made everyone around her an insuffarable bore, especially Ryan. With the constant girl in distress and hero Ryan saving her. It got too much.
I love Taylor, and her interaction with Ryan is even making me enjoy his character.
The entire show is so much more enjoyable with that talentless stick gone.
The petition may not save the OC, but I am grateful that it launched the career of Rachel Bilson who is awesome.

Interesting take on the cancellation. It's going to be interesting to see if the show can make a move to the CW.

Josh Schwartz has got so much going on with new pilots (and potentially series), would he have enough time to be involved with a fifth season?

meg wrote:

Well I agree with most of what this article says, I can see that who ever wrote it had missed some episode's because I'll take Taylor over Marissa any day. Ryan's character is more upbeat being with Taylor even though Marissa dead. Taylor and Ryan have a cute thing going on, which made me want to watch the The OC again. Even if Marissa didn't die I think The OC would still have been canceled maybe even sooner, I think the time slot is to blame. Going against Greys Anatomy and CSI, I mean come on that's a bad time slot. Maybe some views stop watching because of Marissa but they should have given the new Taylor and Ryan relationship a chance. I think The OC was getting old before and now with Ryan and Taylor's romance its been brought back to life. I now really look forward to watching it, more than last year. I think fox should have given it another chance, maybe a different time slot, and I'm sure waiting to start the show in November didn't help any. Last season it was the same old thing and it was getting old as I said before, but this year its gotten its cute old charm back but with a slightly different cast. I LOVE THE OC, WITH GOOD OLD SETH AND SUMMER AND RYAN AND TAYLOR, ITS STILL A GREAT SHOW.
P.S. and in the first season we did see Marissa sister but she was played by a younger different actress.

Timme wrote:

The Oc By far was on the biggest rebound ever Autumn Reeser has managed to fill any gap of marissas and i for one was getting sick of seeing marissa and ryan constantly splitting apare and think of this all the bad things ended wen marissa died. if you think about it she was the cause of all the bad things that happened in the show or maybe not always the cause but it was linked to her. she dragged the show down in the last two seasons and. the show now has new life in it. why cancel a show wen they could have gotten atleast one more season out of it. the ratings were on the rise and FOX couldnt take a risk

Lauryn wrote:

I couldn't watch this show after season one. It didn't keep my interest like it should have. I'm not GLAD it's cancelled because I know many people watch it, but maybe the CW will pick it up and all you O.C. lovers can pick up right where you left off.

Rosado wrote:

Well I must say that I didn't realize how many people watched the OC. Just coming to this website should allow fox to realize that the show wasn't and isn't a total lost. I would have to agree with quite a few people in regards to Marissa. I was extremely relieved to see her go, because frankly she was boring and made the first few seasons a little unbearable. I am a loyal fan and that is why I continued to watch the show eventhough I was able to predict every episode. All I can say now is OH MY GOSH!! I really didn't like Ryan's character either, but I think Taylor is really good for them and I'm excited every Thursday knowing that I will be watching the OC. I think Chris Brown would be able to help out the show if they allowed the show to last a few more seasons. As far as this show being compared to 90210 . . .well personally I was a big fan of the earlier 90210 because they made quite a few changes in characters and most of them didn't even recover to do anything more than that show. Two VERY different eras and TV isn't like it used to be. Law & Order and CSI will always rule, just because people will always be able to relate these shows. Everyone is involved with law and no matter what you will never be able to escape the realism of it. People like things they can relate to, and frankly that is why most of the shows will be short lived. I have never watched Grey's Anatomy so I can't really comment on it. I would HATE to see the show get cancelled, but if it does I hope they don't replace the show with some stupid show like "Lost" or "Survivor". Besides talk about shows lasting FOREVER; let's bring up 24. The show has become outraged, but the US LOVES and I don't even understand why. Oh because poeple are able to relate to it and what is going on in the world. I would be extremely happy if the OC moved to CW because then I can really swear of FOX except during the football season. Help keep OC alive!!

Heather wrote:

Getting the facts straight is a vital tool in convincing people why the show should remain on the air. Caleb: Marissa's step father. Seth's grandfather. Seth: sailed away when Ryan was heading back to chino. HE ended things with Summer when HE left. Not the other way around. And up untill this season (I dont know whats going on because I don't watch anymore), Julie hasn't gone through that manny lovers. Season one was her husband, Jimmy, Marissa's ex, Luke and Caleb. Season two was Caleb and Jimmy, and season three was Summer's dad, Neil Roberts.

It was a good show, but now its just lost a large chunk of its audience with the death of Merissa. Even if you loathed the character like I did, she was essential to the show.

I love this show. Coming from a college student it truly gave me everything I needed and satisfied my time well wasted. This show got me meeting women left right and center, and it seems that every time we got into class it was the talk of the day…usually Fridays. I liked the way the show covered every topic from the big ones to the small ones. I guess every show does that…But this one did it that much better. Or maybe its just my generation, but that gets me thinking is TV. going to consistently keep on repeating it self? I mean how original can they get…We live in a world there are a million possibilities but after that what are we left with? Have we really over played everything? And if so where are we going towards…? Now it seems as if where getting desperate for ideas. Ugly Betty for example who would have thought a Spanish actress playing an ugly person that’s right an ugly person would win an award. All the shows we have now are stretches… we tried the reality world and even that got boring. Now we having singing and dancing competitions and were kind of trying to find the best of the best, sort of like survival of the fittest. Maybe Charles Darwin was going some where when he explains his philosophy. I can only wait to see what the future holds. I don’t know how I got from loving The O.C. to this deep conversation with I guess anyone out there. Night…I could go on you know… maybe some one should make a show about the world we live in and how real people live their lives…and deal with other subjects we haven’t heard about… or bring in wider audiences… that’s my 2 cents.

So i have been a huge OC fan since season one, but this season it is coming on the same time as CSI and Greys Anatomy. This is mistake number 1. Mistake number 2 is definetly the relationship b/n Taylor and Ryan, yea she is trying to fill Marissa's shoes, but it just isn't the same. I truly think Mischa's character had been through too much, it was her time to die. It's a great show, but I truly think it has run it's course :(.

P.S. We did see Kaitlin Cooper in season 3, in fact alot of the last 5 episodes revolved around her character.

with my now 17 year old daughter it's our Thursday Night! I loved Caleb he was hilarious! The way he called Sandy "SANDMAN" I was sad when they took him off. I was always hoping they would bring him back (Caleb would have so faked his own death to get out of his financial mess). When they killed off Merissa I was pissed off! I said I did not want to watch anymore. But I have to admit I love Taylor and Ryan together!!! I don't miss Merissa's character AT ALL! (even though I swore I would). The show is just now rebounding from the whole Merissa thing. There are so many directions that the show can go. Come on CW pick up The OC! I know there are other "OLD" ha ha adult viewers out there watching. We need our OC fix!!!
Thanks!

I think that the O.C was fab. I cried my eyes out when Marissa died in Ryans arms. i told myself it wouldnt be the same without her in it becasue her character was great. i know that Ryan and Taylor got together but i think that Marissa and Ryan were far better suited that them two.
I hope that they bring out a new series of the OC because it was something i loved to watch. i cant understand how people can say they are glad that Marissa is dead because they probably never even watched the show so how would they know.
I think that Josh Schwartz should pick up the OC becasue it is the very highlight of some peoples evenings.I personally would love to see a fifth series as i love the oc so much. i think that Seth, Summer, Ryan, And Marissa were the ones who made the OC the hit that it is(or was). I cant imagine what life will be like without another series of the OC, but i think that the people who leave comments on here should be people that liked the show becasue i think that if Josh Schwartz' crew should count up all the positive comments and if him and his crew get enough good comments then they should carry on making new episodes which will eventually turn into new series which will make all The OC lovers very happy.
I really do think that they should try and find away about bringing Marissa back, for instance she was taken to hospital announced dead but was revived and looked after...... but her twin sister that no-one knew about was in nthe same hospital and she was the one who died and nobody though any different because Marissa had sneaked out of the hospital because she was scared. She phoned Theresa who was in the first and third series and she went to live with her for a while, and then when she felt better she decided to travel to Berkley (the college she would have been in if she didnt have to go and work with her dad and didnt die on her way to meet her dad) where she bumpedc into Ryan who thought he was dreaming so he phoned Theresa like Marissa asked him to and she confirmed that she was realll alive, However they started talking and shared a loving kiss, but Talyor did not take this so well and went psycho and tried to kill her by putting rat poison in her food only to see Ryan about to take a bit bite of Marissas lunch so she runs over and eats it and ends up being rushed to hospital where she later falls into a coma because of the amount of rat poison she consumed. Later inthe series she could wake up from her coma and be taken to psychologist meetings to help her, but after only three meetings she leaves the OC to go and live in the village where she helped difuse landmines.
Thats my suggestion if anyone else has any other episode suggestions then please dont be afraid to submit them.
P.S we need all the help that we can get to get Marissa back and the OC up and running once again.
PLEASE HELP TO GET THE OC UP AND RUNNING AS THE OC DEALT WITH REAL PROBLEMS THAT HAPPEN OR HAVE HAPPENED IN PEOPLES LIVES !! Just like my life.

I think its so sad that so many people are glad Marisa was killed off. She was amazing, one of the main reasons I tuned in. Marisa and Ryan didn't have the "perfect" relationship like on every other teenage soap. They showed teenage viewers that its never easy and if you really love someone you can get through almost anything!! They were planning on going to College together...before she died. If you ask me every actor and actress on The OC was superb. Absolutely blew me away!! Taylor could never replace what Marissa and Ryan had. They were amazing together. Just admit it...
Anyway Mishca Barton is so beautiful half of you are probably just jealous. That girl will definitely be seen in some upcoming movies along with Ryan, Seth and Summer. Fingers crossed!!
